“Dear PoPville,

I was wondering if any readers have experience getting a flu shot at a supermarket, pharmacy, or another place. I see signs advertising this service when I run errands, but I’ve never done it anywhere other than my doctor’s office, where I won’t be able to get one this year.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m looking to move neighborhoods and wasn’t sure about the best way to go about that sort of lease swap in DC? I’d like to get out of the lease but without outright breaking it and incurring the associated fees. The lease terms allow you to find someone else to take over the remainder of the lease. I.e., I have 7 months left on it, so if I found an interested person, they would sign for the remainder of the time and I would be off the hook for rent: my lease would become theirs and my name would be taken off. If I just told the building “I want out” there’s a 2 month rent cost penalty to end the lease early. I wanted to see if anyone had any tips for finding a lease replacement?”

“Dear PoPville,

Loud explosions in Brightwood Park?

I am bewildered by the large bangs that I’ve been hearing over the last few (many? 2020 is a blur) months, here in Brightwood Park. At first, I assumed this was part of DC’s fireworks “season” but now I am not so sure. The explosions are so loud they rattle the entire house and they happen at all hours of the day. At the times when they happen at in the middle of the night – 2:00 or 3:00 am – I have rushed to the window to see absolutely nothing – no signs of humans or traffic or sounds or anything. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I lost my wallet in NoMA a few weeks ago. I looked all over my house, I retraced my steps, I even checked all the businesses near where I lost it. With no luck, I gave up and started the process of replacing my cards and ID. But today USPS delivered it to me! I guess someone found it on the ground and stuck it in a mailbox. It’s a nice reminder that, even with all the craziness in the world, people are still capable of small acts of kindness.”

“Dear PoPville,

What’s up with the tenant in the Barclay Apartment building at 16th and Corcoran St, NW? Someone throws popcorn out, I suppose to feed the birds and squirrels. It’s contributing to the rat problem. I have left messages with the building with no response. #stopthepopcorn It happens regularly. I work evenings and night shifts sometimes and at night it definitely attracts rats. I took this picture a few night ago. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I live on a fairly busy corner. It’s not a massive thoroughfare but it’s got it’s fair share of traffic, and it has a very long light. I’m probably noticing more because I’m working from home these days, but there are consistently a handful of cars that drive by without mufflers or with muffler amplifiers. They are INCREDIBLY loud and often during the early morning. Today, literally a small child started crying when a GT drove by with a muffler delete because she was so startled and scared of the noise. Traffic is loud enough as is and I know the DMV area does not permit any exhaust system amplification but I’m wondering if there’s an agency I can report the license plates to? As far as I can tell you can only report unsafe drivers.”

“Dear PoPville,

I recently purchased my first condo (yay!) that is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath where each room has its own bathroom. My hope is to rent out the second bedroom so that I can get some help with paying the mortgage, while I’d be living in the other bedroom of course.

My question is, being someone who knows absolutely nothing much about DC laws much less about renting, where do I start with renting out the room? (more…)
