“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I are looking for a short term rental May 30 – June 18 while we are between moves. We have a toddler (so need a bathtub) and an older, quiet, and well-behaved dog. We’d love to find something near Brookland/Hyattsville MD or even on the hill so we can stay close to our daughter’s daycare.

We haven’t had much luck on Airbnb / VRBO finding something pet friendly and/or not exorbitant, so I was hoping this might be a good place to ask!”

“Dear PoPville,

With summer travel opening up, I’m wondering if people have any experience using a professional house sitting service. We’ll be visiting some national parks this summer for two weeks.

We have a healthy cat who needs to be cared for, but otherwise, it’s just living in our space while we’re away. We’re open to local individuals or a national agency. We’re looking forward to safely hitting the road this summer! (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Another Capitol Hill oddity is right off Stanton Park. The right turn off of C St NE: is it two turn lanes divided by a bike lane, or just one lane? If you want to turn right onto 6th Street NE and then an immediate left onto Maryland (see the red dashed line below), which lane should you turn from? (more…)

Not that we’ve determined that home roof decks are indeed worth the coin.

“Dear PoPville,

With real estate prices going through the roof [Ed. Note: please let that pun be intended], I wanted to find out how much popping up a row house generally costs? One friend spent $275k. Is that normal?”

For those who’ve had it done, how much did it cost?

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to alert you to the fact that buried in the Mayor’s last Covid update about weddings is a line that states, “Standing and dancing receptions are not allowed.” (Paragraph 4 on page 9.) This is brand new, and means that starting May 1, there can be no dancing (or standing?!) at wedding receptions in DC.

M.O. 2021-060 Modified Measures in Phase Two of Washington DC Reopening

There was no warning that this restriction was coming, and as everything is opening up more and more, it took everyone completely by surprise. As a bride who postponed her DC wedding from last summer to this summer in order to keep our guests and community safe, it’s extremely disappointing that an entirely vaccainted group of individuals cannot gather for a wedding reception and dance, masked and socially distant. It is also confusing why dancing was allowed before but, as cases have gone down and more and more residents are being vaccinated, the city has now decided to ban dancing. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Yesterday at 1:30pm a man at the Post office walking in loud looking for an employee who no longer works there. I told him that she no longer is there as he was yelling so loud and he came at me …

I forgot to say Thank You to the guy who just intervened in line at the post office when this man snatched my phone out my hand and asked me if i wanted to get slapped!!! (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

People say you need to shoot your shot — does that include when both people are getting a shot?

Monday afternoon, convention center, Safeway sector. You: sage coat, blue t-shirt, silver hair. Me: olive t-shirt, black jeans, tattoos. I had to flip my chair 180 degrees since I got my vaccine in the atypical arm, we therefore somewhat awkwardly faced each other for the duration of our inoculations. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

About a year ago USPS decided that our single family home was now four units. That meant four of each mailer. But it also makes it impossible to forward mail that is sent to our true address, the one without units attached to it, because USPS only recognizes the addresses with units on the site. We had a feeling that the new condo down the street, with four units, messed something up when they registered their addresses. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Wondering if you can post a question on the site about library access? Wondering why schools and retail are “reopening” but access to browse at the library is still restricted. I emailed the chair of the council cmte yesterday but haven’t heard back.”

DCPL currently says:

“As libraries open in phases, there will be limits on the services offered in each phase. Our goal is to gradually offer more services as health restrictions are relaxed. As each library will require some reconfiguration in order to accommodate the need to social distance, library services may look differently at each library based on the location’s space layout. Additionally, some of the public spaces in libraries may be needed as staff space to ensure materials are handled safely and staff can social distance.

The Library is currently open for limited in-person services. You can visit our open libraries to: (more…)
