“Dear PoPville,

I live at 16th and Columbia Road NW. We and our neighbors have been dealing with noise on and off from the roadwork for the 16th Street bus project — while working from home — since February or March. Now, we found out last night that the contractors are going to be doing resurfacing work at our intersection overnight, potentially every night this week.

This work is loud, with constant starting and stopping of machinery that shakes the room. I managed to get to sleep while blasting white noise through my earbuds and wearing noise-canceling headphones. But that only worked for a couple of hours, and then I was awake until well after they finally quit work after 3 am.

This is all so that commuters don’t have to deal with roadwork during the day. Seriously? (more…)

I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind posting the Facebook post that Madam’s Organ just put up. I’m a musician who plays at the club a couple of days a week and they just discovered a racket where the doorman were stealing the cover charges that go to musicians by having customers pay the cover charge to their personal venmo. I have run into James ( I hope I remember your name!) no less than 10 times in my building. We would run into each other in the elevator, the gym, up on the rooftop, all over the building.

I never built up the courage to exchange information with him, but I promised myself the next time I saw him, I would do so. Well, of course, then I did not run into him again, and I went home to Atlanta for a few months. When I returned, there he was again! (more…)

Can anyone recommend a contractor to replace an entryway door in the Capitol Hill Historic District? The wood door on our 1967 row house has seen better days. We’ve had a few contractors come out to give estimates–some are totally unaware of the historic preservation review part of the permit process and others are completely discouraged by it. (more…)

I live in an apartment community, and since June the building’s fire/smoke/whatever alarm has been going off…and never really stopped. On the rare occasion someone switches it off, barely a few hours would pass before going off again, and then it stays that way for days or weeks on end. (more…)
