Well I don’t know who is to blame but I’ve delayed as long as possible and can do so no longer – the retail at the Tivoli is a disgrace. So much potential on such a unique amazing building. Last week we learned a Verizon store was coming to the former Uptowner Deli space and now another wireless store is coming to the former hair salon. Update from the property manager:

“Verizon Wireless will be taking over the previous Uptowner Deli space. The photo of the salon space was an error made by Verizon Wireless sign vendor, which should already be corrected.”

What an opportunity wasted. So who is to blame?

From an email:

“With great sadness, we would like to take a moment to thank each and every one of you, our wonderful customers and clients, for frequenting De Vinos over the past nine years.

We are extremely proud of the quality of our service and product that we have brought to Adams Morgan. However, it is our customers and clients that have truly made De Vinos a success. For this, we cannot thank you enough.

De Vinos space is slated for sale much to our dismay, we are closing. We are seeking a new location somewhere within the community to continue to purvey our selection.

De Vinos will be closing by the end of this month, or as soon we liquidate our inventory. Please, come say Hi and enjoy the great savings in our “Gotta Sell It Specials”.

We will keep you updated on our progress as to new location.!

Once again, THANK YOU all, who have patronized us through the years.

– de vinos”

Ed. Note: As for the sweet scuttlebutt – I’m hearing it may have something to do with nearby Jack Rose and though I have no idea what plans are, Jack Rose is awesome so if affiliated this will be sweet indeed (assuming of course that De Vinos finds a new spot and opens soon nearby.) Stay tuned on all fronts.

Axis was located right near Kramerbooks just north of the circle. Word is they closed a couple months ago. Updates when we learn who leases the prime space.

After 5 years ( originally on the first floor and then upstairs) Ginger Root Design will be closing shop on U Street in March – from an email:

“Thank you to all of our wonderful customers and clients who have frequented our tailoring shop over the past 5 years! We’ve always appreciated you, and are proud that we’ve never once needed to advertise. Your word of mouth built our business, and we’re so grateful! You’ve always had our back as we transitioned throughout the years, and we’re excited to announce the next big news:

We are both pregnant!! And while we have absolutely loved our journey at Ginger Root, it is time for us to take another step forward as we each grow our families.

So, what does that mean?! We are winding things down at our U Street space, and we will be closing Ginger Root Design in March. We will still be tailoring right here in DC, however, out of our individual spaces (though we’re sure to collaborate still from time to time). As we both have different specialties, we are taking this as an opportunity to do what we do best! (more…)

Photo of Union Station food court tweeted to us by @vplus

Thanks to a reader for updating us on the Walgreens coming to Union Station:

“I spoke with an employee of Union Station this morning. He confirmed that the Walgreens will be located in the back of the food court, as discussed below. It’s not scheduled to open for 10 months, however! The other construction going on in the Union Station food court is mostly to create as-yet-unrented retail spaces. He confirmed that a Dunkin Donuts was originally supposed to go in by the Bojangles, but that those papers have not yet been signed. He also said that another Chipotle would be opening in the food court, even though there’s already a Chipotle on the first floor of Union Station. He speculated that the reason Chipotle would want to open two restaurants in the same building is that the original Chipotle is hugely busy and has consistently long lines.”

From a press release:

“The growing collection of distinctive local and regional restaurants and retailers that are joining The Yards has just taken a significant step forward with the announcement that the renowned, DC-born and based menswear purveyor, Hugh & Crye, will open in March at The Yards. The announcement was made today by Forest City Washington, the master developer of The Yards, a major, urban mixed-use redevelopment project growing in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood of DC.

Bringing its high quality custom-fit and ready-to-wear collection of menswear and accessories to The Yards is the latest step in the impressive growth of this distinctive menswear retailer which was founded in DC’s Shaw neighborhood in late 2009 primarily as an online retailer (hughandcrye.com).

The new 2,858 SF Hugh & Crye shop will be located in the Boilermaker Shops, the former Navy Yard industrial building on Tingey Street SE between Third and Fourth Sts. SE in The Yards which also houses several other retailers and restaurants, including Bluejacket and Willie’s. Hugh & Crye is the first clothing retailer to open at The Yards. (more…)

In other Columbia Heights news, @MrTinDC sends an update on the former Uptowner Deli space which closed in August:

“.@PoPville The old Uptowner Deli space in the Tivoli has permit in window for a Verizon Wireless Store. Better than vacant, but… BO-ring!”

I’m afraid I agree with Mr. T – better than vacant but worse than the former deli for sure.
