Back in July we we first learned that Souk from the owners of nearby Sweet Lobby, would be opening up a new concept in the former Hello Cupcake space on Barracks Row. I peeked my head in over the weekend and was told to stay tuned for the soft opening Wed. While it wasn’t quite photo ready, the space really looks great and will be a nice addition to the row. I’ll update later this week.

A little over a couple months old – I finally checked out W.S. Jenks & Son’s new Trinidad location near H Street, NE. The folks were super nice and the place is stocked with all your hardware needs:

“Established in 1866, W.S. Jenks is Washington’s most complete source for Tools, Hardware, and Machinery”

And the space is huge – was on old car showroom. And W.S. Jenks is super old with some great history:

“2014 – W.S. JENKS & SON moves to a new 20,000 sf location with a new emphisis on the local hardware experience. In addition to our government and commerical sales, our new retail showroom is a unique shopping experience. Visit us and see why we are not just another hardware store.

After 146 Years WS JENKS & SON has earned the reputation as “Washington’s Oldest Hardware Store” and is the finest in Industrial, Woodworking, Contractor and Electronic Assembly Tool sales. Whether the order was placed by Mr. Morse’s telegraph or Mr. Bell’s telephone or today’s E-mail, we look forward to continued growth in the future, while giving our customers prompt, personal service and attention.”

Check out tons of photos after the jump including some sweet old history (botanic gardens ledger from early 1900s and tons more) – oh yeah there are plans for an eventual partnership with a restaurant (nobody in particular yet) to lease the space for a roof top restaurant and bar – but that’s way down the road – but when it comes… (more…)

If you had any doubts about Ivy City blowing up – you can officially drop them. Big news from the Washington Business Journal:

“The next retailer to open at the Hecht Warehouse in Northeast D.C. will be a Nike Factory store, as the athletic apparel retailer will plant its flag there by late April.

Jemal also had some more Hecht restaurant news to share: Bar magnate Geoff Dawson — of Buffalo Billiards, Jackpot and others — has signed a lease to open there with Peter Bayne, his partner in Lost & Found, Iron Horse and Rocket Bar. The bar from Dawson and Bayne will be located at 2002 Fenwick St. NE.”

From a press release:

“Today, lovers of the outdoors learned that the country’s largest consumer co-op and specialty outdoor retailer, REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.), will open its fifth flagship store in late 2016 at the site chosen by President Eisenhower for his inaugural ball and by the Beatles for their first concert in the U.S. The REI flagship will serve the fast growing outdoor community in the region, including more than 281,000 REI members who live in and around Washington, D.C. already.

The new REI will be a place to inspire, educate and outfit people who want to live more of their lives outside no matter their skill level or outdoor interest. It is being designed collaboratively. Representatives from the outdoor community are spending time together Wednesday evening to preview and discuss emerging plans including the store design, educational outdoor classes and partnerships with local non-profits, which are the foundation of all REI stores because they help REI members gain access to great places to play. “Dear PoPville,

I heard second-hand that the Walgreens in Union Station rumors have been confirmed. Some of the merchants who are being displaced in the food court area, said that a Walgreens and possibly a Harris Teeter (although this part sounds unlikely) would be located in the food court area where the Indian restaurant currently is.

I would be so excited if this were true! Union Station needs a drugstore like crazy.”

Ed. Note: Do you think there’s enough room for a Walgreens and a Harris Teeter? Would it even make sense to have both? Maybe it’ll be one of those big Walgreens that have a significant grocery section?

“Dear PoPville,

Does anyone know the story behind Ledroit Market? I’ve lived in Bloomingdale for 3 years and it seems to follow the pattern of being open for a few months, closing down, going up for sale for 6-7 months, then re-opening and looking exactly the same.”

Another reader shares a bit more enthusiasm:

“LeDroit market is now open!!!

Awesome normal hours 7am-10pm.
Serving breakfast and lunch
Your good’ol neighborhood convenient store!

Hallelujah!”
