From an email:

“I thought your readers would be interested to know that the market has rebranded as Gorebet, which means neighborhood in Amharic and reflects owner Neja Ali’s Ethiopian roots. In keeping with the warm and welcoming environment emblemized by its homemade sambusas — savory Ethiopian pastries stuffed with vegetables or chicken — Gorebet is further embracing its community by offering a variety of DC-made products. These include in-demand healthier and fresher options, such as: (more…)

Sad news up in Chevy Chase. Thanks to Marina for sending word: “Full of Beans Children’s Boutique is gone. Shame. Had really cute clothing for babies to age 8. Woman-owned, independent boutique, employed lots of locals and cared about the community. Generations of kids were shopped for there!” (more…)

Thanks to Cameron and Kristin for sending: “Another hit for small retail in DC. First Punch, then this.”

From Violet:

“This is a bittersweet email to write. After much thought, I’ve decided to close Violet. Our last day open will be October 20th and all sales will be final as of September 30th.

Update from Rock and Roll Hotel: “December and January are notoriously slow. We have national acts confirmed that cannot yet be announced. Not sure where this rumor is coming from, but it is false and they are misinformed.

NYE 2020 goes on sale at Noon Today which was already scheduled. Our normal programming of rooftop open and 2nd floor DJs are all in place.”

“November 29, 2019 @ 8:00 am – January 4, 2020 @ 5:00 pm
DC Djs – 2nd Floor – Free

Rock & Roll Hotel’s legendary dance floor keeps moving and shaking with a wide range of Top 40, anthems, and dance hits brought to you by some of DC’s finest Djs! 2ND FLOOR | FREE | 10PM – 3AM | 21+”

OK, I’m not saying it’s time to freak out right now but I’m not saying stay perfectly calm either. Because this is odd. I got a tip that Rock and Roll Hotel could be closing by the end of the year. The tipster has a very good record but was only 50/50 on this. So keep that in mind. At any rate back in 2013 we first noted that the building was listed for sale. I hadn’t heard much since then. But then the tipster wrote in. And now is the curious part. (more…)
