Back in Feb. we learned Tynan coffee had closed in Friendship Heights and would be replaced by a Le Pain Quotidien.

From an email:

Our brand new store is the 13th one in the DC area, and is located at the Shops of Wisconsin Place, an urbane lifestyle center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. We occupy a part of the open plaza next to Bloomingdale’s, with large outdoor patio seating. Guests can enjoy our boulangeire fare with handmade organic bread, pastries, tartines, soups and salads. We stay true to our sustainable roots by incorporating eco-friendly features like LED lighting, recycled cast-iron arched windows and refurbished church pew seating.

From a press release:

Bub and Pop’s is becoming well known in DC for their sandwiches, soups, salads and Kettle Cooked Sea Salt & Black Pepper Potato Chips. On Friday, April 19, Bub and Pop’s added Water Ice to their list of house made offerings.

Water Ice, also known as Italian Ice, is a Philadelphia tradition sold from Spring well into the first frost of the Fall. Chef Jon’s recipe includes fresh fruit, water and natural sugar – that’s all that’s in it! It gets blended, frozen and then scraped to serving size. Four flavors are currently being featured: Passion Fruit, Black Cherry, Peach and Espresso (no fresh fruit in that one, just real coffee).

Soon to follow this Summer are ice cream sandwiches that consist of our house made Tahitian vanilla ice cream between two house made Oatmeal, Walnut, Chocolate Chip Cookies. And in keeping with Bub and Pop’s way of doing things, every thing will still be made in-house and all natural.

You can see Bub and Pop’s complete menu here. Any fans?

Lots of changes coming to 7th Street in Chinatown. We knew the Potbelly was becoming a Lime Fresh but now a liquor license has been posted for a new Tavern coming to the basement of 726 7th St, NW:

Jackpot

Tavern serving light food with a seating capacity of 47 for patrons and total load of 160. Request an entertainment endorsement for occasional entertainment.

CityPaper reported:

“Iron Horse Taproom and Rocket Bar co-owners Curt Large and Geoff Dawson are opening a bar called Jackpot in the basement space below Lime Fresh (formerly Potbelly) at 726 7th St. NW.”

And Washington Business Journal reports just down the block that Ruby Tuesday has closed as of Sunday night:

Ruby Tuesday plans to close its doors at the end of service Sunday, making way for at least two new retailers to come into the space. Fast-growing self-serve yogurt chain FroZenYo will lease space there and open there by the third week of June.

WBJ also reports that a “a candy store and a fast-casual Asian joint” could take over the remaining spaces that formally made up Ruby Tuesday. Stay tuned.

Back in July 2012 I shared some scuttlebutt that a Tico Taco from Chef/Owner Michael Schlow would be coming to the Louis project at 14th and U St, NW.

Yesterday CityPaper confirmed:

“Boston-based celebrity chef Michael Schlow is opening Tico in the Louis at 14 development from JBG Companies just south of U Street NW.”

You can see Tico’s menus here.

I’m not afraid to admit, I still weep for my vanished Taco Bell

When hunting and fishing were recently banned at the North Capitol Firehouse, I knew we were in for some good news… Thanks to all who sent emails about the new facebook page for the Washington Firehouse Restaurant:

“A new restaurant anticipated opening in 2013, The Washington Firehouse, Old Engine Company 12 still serves the neighborhood today, but in a slightly different capacity, with its American Classic menu.”

The Bloomingdale Blog reports:

“An operator was signed last week and should be on course for a early summer opening, late June early July.”

What do you guys think – another tease or is this really happening late June/early July?

Check out some awesome renderings (they have construction shots as well) from the Firehouse’s facebook page:
