14th and U Street, NW

Back in July 2012 I shared some scuttlebutt that a Tico Taco from Chef/Owner Michael Schlow would be coming to the Louis project at 14th and U St, NW.

Yesterday CityPaper confirmed:

“Boston-based celebrity chef Michael Schlow is opening Tico in the Louis at 14 development from JBG Companies just south of U Street NW.”

You can see Tico’s menus here.

I’m not afraid to admit, I still weep for my vanished Taco Bell

Between Pica Taco, Taco El Chilango, the new Federal Taqueria (i think that’s what it is?) at 14th and T, and this….that’s a lotta tacos

    • andrew

Oh, looking at the menu, this looks more upscale, like El Centro

      • I can’t see the menu cuz I’m at work, does it have fish tacos?

      • Yeah. It’s basically El Centro Dos. How. Exciting.

  • Despite all this, The 14th & U McDonald’s still lives on!

    • anon

Seriously. It doesn’t get much worse than that McD’s. Last time I stopped in there was some woman cussing the crap out of her young children. U St has some real classy places….

I ate there last night. Food is the same as every McD’s. Whatever. We don’t have to displace ALL the poor people now, do we?

Taco Tico is a chain across the central and southern US, based in Kansas, actually. They’re a step above Taco Bell, but they’re nothing like El Centro.

    • This is not Taco Tico.

Then maybe the title should be edited. It’s a little bit misleading.

          No it’s not

I thought Taco Bell would be the bridge that would unite the gentrifying masses with the established residents of D.C. If drunk post-grads looking to satiate their late night cravings and local workers looking for a cheap bite couldn’t come together to save our access to Cheesy Gordita Crunches, then what hope do we have for the future?

    I’m still mourning.

The Taco Bell / KFC combo storefront didn’t go down due to bad reviews on the food. No, it was closed because it had become a center of drug trafficking for the neighborhood.

      • Hardly. It closed to be torn down to make way for the Louis 14 project. See picture.

          +1. Kathryn is clueless.

  • Menu looks like mexican-fusion. Mac and cheese? lobster tacos?

    • Give me your finest food stuffed with your second finest food.

Right away sir! Lobster stuffed with Tacos

  • andrew

    Ticos dont eat tacos

      ¡Pura vida!

omg omg omg who cares about tacos, Louis at XIV just confirmed TRADER JOES!
In response to my February 1st question on the building’s Facebook page, “Is it true that you’re going to host a new Trader Joe’s supermarket? If true, what’s the timeline? Thanks!” they finally responded two hours ago,That is the plan, Sandy! For the latest, register for updates on our website here: http://www.louisat14.com/

And they gave the same reply to someone else on Twitter.

I love them just because they didn’t submit the usual epic long explanation of their “unique” cusine.

  • I’ve eaten at two of his restaurants in Boston (Radius and Via Matta), both were underwhelming based on the hype. They were both pretty to look at though, and relatively expensive, so I can see the appeal for this location.
