From a press release:

“Vietnamese Tet is a weeklong celebration, centered on gathering with family & friends, bringing in new luck, and paying off old debts. It is the “Feast of the First Morning of the First Day”, and the most important of any holiday.

Sprig & Sprout invites you to experience Vietnamese Tet and start your year anew with us. For our very special January Supper Club our upstairs will be transformed with glorious, some might even say gaudy and over the top, décor. Close your eyes and imagine lit lanterns of red and yellow, dancing dragons, and peach blossoms. Welcome to Sprig & Sprout during Tet.

For this 8 course Pre Fixe dinner expect traditional dishes you’ll find in every Vietnamese household. Banana leaf wrapped sticky rice cake, filled with sweet mung bean and pork, served my favorite way – pan fried! Assorted charcuterie balanced by just slightly pickled vegetables. Twice cooked crispy chicken, so laborious it’s only done once a year (kind of like thanksgiving turkey)! And, in the tradition of “Li Xi” we have good luck gifts for all our guests.

We are doing two seatings for January Tet Supper Club, and seats are anticipated to fill up very quickly. Please call the restaurant (202-333-2569), or email ([email protected]) to reserve. Credit card information will be required for reservations.

Tet Supper Club – January 13th & 20th, 2014 8 course Prix Fixe $50

Very good news for Chevy Chase residents. Washington Business Journal:

“Now, the former owner of The Burro burrito chain in D.C. wants back in. Brown plans to open macon bistro & larder at 5520 Connecticut Ave. NW this spring, bringing a combination 60-seat restaurant and market to the former Chevy Chase Arcade.”

Lots more details from Macon’s website:

“Years in the making, macon – bistro & larder will open in Chevy Chase, DC during Spring 2014 in an incredible space that speaks of old world charm and casual elegance – the Chevy Chase Arcade. Having lived in the neighborhood since 1999, I know the un-met demand for locally-owned, neighborhood-focused restaurants where cooking is a passion and service is an art form. That is my dream for macon.

Drawing from my experience as a restaurateur and business owner, macon will celebrate the eclectic intersections and rich traditions from my childhood. Please join me on this “road to macon.” I encourage you to get involved, spread the word, and be a part of bringing some southern hospitality to Chevy Chase.

Born to a line of central-Georgia dairy farmers, I grew up with an appreciation of farm fresh ingredients and slow-food cooking. Sunday dinners were slow-braised chuck roast with onion gravy and whipped potatoes; summers were vine-ripened tomatoes, butter beans, and creamed corn; and weekend breakfasts were Grandma Essie’s buttermilk biscuits and soft-scrambled eggs. But as an Army brat, my view of the world was stretched at an early age. I grew to appreciate the rich traditions found in kitchens around the world. I honed my trade with culinary training at Peter Kump’s in New York followed by stints at Danny Meyer’s Union Square Cafe in NYC and Joyce Goldstein’s Square One in San Fran.

With macon, I will draw from timeless, classic bistro cuisine [the French Burgundy Macon] as seen through the lens of my southern roots [the Georgia Macon]. Far from the deep-fried fare that is typical to southern-themed restaurants, this will celebrate farm-to-table traditions of the southern countryside. The bar at macon will serve well-chosen wines by the glass or bottle, micro-brews from local and southern breweries and craft cocktails. A family-friendly, neighborhood center, macon will soon be a vibrant and vital hub of the Chevy Chase community.”

It was almost exactly a year ago that we first learned Toro Toro from Chef Richard Sandoval was coming to 1300 I Street, NW. Now Washington Business Journal reports a new permit posted for:

“Interior renovations to 9,230 square feet on the first floor and basement level for the new, 240-seat restaurant Toro Toro.”

Toro Toro is a Richard Sandoval restaurant:

Toro Toro is a creative blend of Pan Latin styles and flavors. Chef-owner Richard Sandoval, whose accolades include Bon Appétit Restaurateur of the Year and Mexico’s Toque d’Oro, artfully spins South and Central American ingredients into small plates designed for sharing.

The beverage menu features innovative, hand-muddled cocktails, a collection of Latin wines and a variety of sugarcane spirits, which may be sipped at the Rum and Cachaca Bars. The vibrant décor fuses traditional and contemporary tastes, the perfect setting to savor Chef Richard Sandoval’s acclaimed cuisine.

You can see the menu for Toro Toro Dubai here. You can see a list of other Sandoval restaurants here.

A few weeks ago some some confusing signage was posted outside Caliyogurt in Adams Morgan. Turns out it is becoming Spoon “Frozen Yogurt Spot”. The Adams Morgan BID also reports:

“Spoon Me offers frozen yogurt, smoothies, juices, waffles and oatmeal. The company serves over 30 flavours of frozen yogurt, with at least 10 flavors available at each location. All flavors are fat-free, gluten free, and refined sugar-free. The yogurt contains very few calories, and has no artificial flavors, sweeteners, or colors. Customers can choose their own yogurt flavor at self-serve stations, and mix in their own toppings. There are 40 toppings to choose from, ranging from candies and cookies to fruit. Spoon Me frozen yogurt is priced by weight, at 30 to 40 cents per ounce.

Spoon Me offers about 15 kinds of smoothies. The smoothies have a frozen yogurt base, using either natural, green tea, or açaí yogurt.Customers can also add soy protein, multivitamins, energy, vitamin C, smart blend and many other nutritional supplements to their smoothie.

All of Spoon Me’s bowls and spoons are biodegradable and edible, made from corn starch. They hope to be open in the next few weeks and their hours will be Monday-Thursday from 11 am to 12 midnight and Friday/Saturday 11 am to 1 am, Sundays from 11 am to 9 pm.”

alba_osteria
425 I Street, NW from early November

“Dear PoPville,

Alba Osteria is officially open! I went to happy hour tonight with a friend, and so far I like it, so I thought I’d spread the news….

During happy hour, all of their draft beers are $4, including a pretty decent selection of local and other craft beers. There are a few random meat-based food selections, plus all of the pizzas are half off (so about $6-7 each, I guess) and there are a lot of vegetarian options there. I was worried about the atmosphere but it was pretty nice and low key. It also wasn’t too loud or anything … although it was far from filled when I was there from about 5:15 to 8:30 or so. Hooray for new places in the (work) ‘hood!”

Their facebook page says:

“Guests can anticipate cuisine from Chef Roberto Donna’s home region of Piemonte, Italy with a focus on the town of Alba. Guests can anticipate an expansive salumi and formaggi counter, plus a selection of antipasti, house-made pastas (available in small and large portions), and Neapolitan pizzas. A variety of daily specials displayed in “Italian sized” portions will also be available for sharing in the traditional Piemontese fashion.”

Their hours are:

Monday – Thursday
11 AM – 11 PM
Friday
11 AM – 12 AM
Saturday
10:30 AM – 12 AM
Sunday
10:30 AM – 11 PM

Check out the dinner menu after the jump. (more…)
