Back in April we learned Ri Ra Irish Pub would be opening in the former Mie N Yu space in Georgetown. They’re now open. From a press release:

“Rí Rá Irish Pub (3123-3125 M Street, NW; 202-751-2111), destined to become Georgetown’s favorite gathering place, boasts cuisine that defies ‘Irish pub’ standards in the United States, a comprehensive beverage list and authentic Irish décor. The dining room and main bar are now open daily, beginning at 4pm on weekdays and 10am for brunch and dinner on weekends, with breakfast and lunch service scheduled to debut later in January. Rí Rá is also finalizing its Whiskey Room, a comfortable specialty bar upstairs, scheduled to open in mid-January as well, which will offer the most extensive Irish whiskey selection in the Washington area alongside a menu of modern Irish small plates.

The cuisine at Rí Rá Georgetown showcases the best of modern Ireland—the delights of traditional fare created with a nod towards the contemporary. Designed by Rí Rá Executive Chef Christian Struck, the Georgetown menu presents pub favorites, starters, carvery sandwiches and fresh salads, crafted with true Irish flair and prepared with local ingredients.

“Pub fare in general can be seen as drab and heavy; we work to create items that trend more toward comfort and work the lighter elements in where we can and where they make sense,” says Chef Struck of his cuisine.

What truly sets Rí Rá Georgetown apart is the not-so-traditional. The menu will change with the seasons, something new for the brand. Mouthwatering starters include organic Irish smoked salmon served with boxty blini, capers, pickled onion and lemon aïoli and stout mussels prepared with smoked bacon, Guinness, cream, fresh herbs and a crostini.

A selection of Chef Struck’s dishes may be enjoyed all day including Irish classics like shepherd’s pie—minced lamb, carrots, peas, leeks, savory gravy, and a mashed potato crust, and fish & chips—made only with the highest quality North Atlantic cod, served with freshly cut chips and house made tartar sauce—one of the many dishes served with Batchelor’s mushy peas, a homey Irish accompaniment. Guests looking for lighter options can find burgers and carvery sandwiches such as the Dubliner—a ground lamb & rosemary patty, with grilled red onion, goat cheese, topped with curry aïoli, and the publican Reuben—made with local Sweet Farm Sauerkraut, and traditional corned beef & cabbage.

Come late January, the lunch options will include a burger unique to Georgetown—the 202 with a beef patty, shaved rib, melted Swiss, caramelized onion and horseradish aïoli, served on a savory pretzel bun. In addition, the restaurant offers a healthy selection of salads. The Rí Rá is a succulent combination of cold smoked salmon, baby spinach, pickled onion, rasher, Irish Cashel Blue and lemon dressing.

Entrée offerings expand at dinner with roast pork made with apple & cider poached cranberries, champ and garlicky green beans, topped off with a Magners cider glaze, and roast chicken served with baby spinach & potato tart, spiked peach chutney and rosemary incense.

Guests can indulge with a menu dedicated to “sweet pots” after a meal. Delicious desserts include banoffe pie—sliced banana, house toffee, whipped cream and a biscuit crumb, and the trinity—Bailey’s chocolate mousse, Jameson whipped cream, topped off with decadent Guinness chocolate sauce. Stick around for a nightcap and choose from the extensive selection of Irish whiskeys and after-dinner drinks.

Brunch specialties will be available Saturday and Sunday starting at 10am. The menu boasts delectable sweet and savory options. The savory Quay’s waffle is topped with Irish smoked salmon, house made potato waffles, fried capers and lemon aïoli. The sweet Bailey’s Brulée French toast is made with Irish cream spiked batter and finished with a fired sugar crust and maple syrup.

Current hours are as follows: Monday – Friday 4pm ‘til late; Saturday – Sunday: 10am ‘til late.”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to spread the word that today is Burma Restaurant’s last day. Dinner is from 6 pm-10 pm tonight, first come first serve. Burma was the first restaurant I went to when I moved to DC more than 6 years ago, and I’m sad to see it leave.”

Burma’s website says:

“We are the premier Burmese restaurant in the metro DC area. This restaurant introduced Burmese food to the nation’s capital. The Burma serves authentic, regional cuisines from the Southeast Asian country. Delicious noodles and curries, salads and appetizers, vegetarian and meat dishes. Since opening it has been the winner of Washington Best Bargain Award, winner of Washington Cheap Eats 10 years in a row and reviewed by area’s top publications. Popular gathering place for scholars interested in the country. Monthly meeting place for Chinatown business networking.

Owing to the geographic location of Myanmar, Burmese cuisine has been influenced by China, India and Thailand. The diversity of Myanmar’s cuisine has also been contributed to by the myriad of local ethnic minorities. Burmese cuisine is characterized by extensive use of fish products like fish sauce and ngapi. These salads have always been popular as fast foods in Burmese cities.”

“Dear PoPville,

While walking by Lime yesterday, I noticed a sign that said “We are closed” taped on the outside of the door and a lot of activity inside, including removing the registers. Do you know if Lime is closing permanently? Or whether this is temporary for a remodel or something along those lines?”

“Lime Fresh Closed. All belongings pulled/snatched out. Sunday.”

I called the store and the folks at Lime Fresh confirm that the Columbia Heights location has permanently closed. They note that the Chinatown location on 7th Street remains open. Lime Fresh opened in Columbia Heights in DC USA back in August 2012. We judged them here.

A few weeks ago we learned that Catch 15 oyster bar would be opening up the week of Christmas – here are more details from a press release:

“The Grand Opening of Catch 15 Restaurant and Oyster Bar is slated for December 27th, 2013, just in time for the New Year. Located at 1518 K Street NW in the Peyser Building, a historic remnant of “Washington’s Wall Street”, the sophisticated restaurant space accommodates 91 guests indoors, with outside seating for warmer months for up to 30 guests. Catch 15 is open seven days a week, with hours from 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday – Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Inspired by their diverse backgrounds, Executive Chef Vincent Torres and owner Tony Kowkabi collaborated on an eclectic menu, catering to DC’s ever expanding international culture, including a selection of small plates and ceviches, stuffed oysters, and a raw bar, with fresh oysters, clams, and shrimp offerings year round. The menu features a strong emphasis on seafood, with meatier fare, such as Grilled Beef Filet with Portobello mushrooms, Plancha-seared Duck Breast, and Lamb Tagine. Torres honed his craft under the direction of renowned Master Chef Yannick Cam of Provènce and Coco Loco, at Eleventh Hour and with Kowkabi in Solé Restaurant at the Washington Harbour.

Inside, a marble bar outfitted with flat screen TV’s and plush leather bar stools, will offer a variety of artisan and classic cocktails, an expansive wine list, and a host of craft beers. Intimate booth spaces, and a cozy lounge area perfect for large groups, accented with a beautiful gas fireplace, and state of the art sound and visual effects complete the restaurants inviting and casually sophisticated atmosphere. “We plan to make Catch 15 a focal point of DC dining culture”, said owner Tony Kowkabi, a longtime restaurateur. “We’ve designed Catch to feel like home; it’s the type of place that guests come to enjoy a great time, with great food and great people, and they never want to leave.”

Thanks to a reader for sending the update. Back in March we learned a new Thai restaurant would be taking over this space around the corner from the recently opened Stoney’s on L Street (the entrance to Soi 38 is on 21st Street a bit north of L Street.) It’s going to be called Soi 38 (website isn’t live yet) and they promise “authentic Thai street food”. Sweet!

What an awesome name! A recent liquor license application says Boss Shepherd’s will be a:

“New restaurant serving American cuisine. Occasional entertainment including light music and jazz. Occupancy load is 127.”

Hours will be Sunday through Thursday, 7am – 2 am, Friday and Saturday 7 am – 3 am.

“Paul Cohn, founder of J.Paul’s and senior executive officer of the Capital Restaurant Concepts [Though he will be leaving CRC, the group is also behind] Old Glory BBQ, Georgia Brown’s, Paolo’s Ristorante, Neyla, The River Club and Club Zei, along with several locations of Paul Bakery”
