Yesterday we noted after two years there was finally some serious progress at the Red Apron spot coming to Penn Quarter. Thanks to Lisa for sharing a couple of Craigslist ads about hiring for Red Apron and the attached restaurant next door – The Partisan:
“The Partisan is hiring for all restaurant positions!
The Partisan, a new restaurant concept by Neighborhood Restaurant Group, is a full service restaurant highlighting the Red Apron charcuterie of Chef and Butcher Nate Anda along with unique meat-centric dishes from Chef Ed Witt. The menu is designed to encourage sharing, showcasing 100’s of cured and aged meats through a variety of cooking techniques, including whole animal rotisserie. The restaurant will also feature an extensive wine list with a large selection of sustainably produced wines on tap, draft beers and craft cocktails intended to highlight our quality products.
All of our charcuterie is handmade by our culinary team, and all dishes are prepared using responsibly raised meats and locally sourced products. Service will be smart and informative while maintaining a relaxed dining experience. All Partisan candidates should possess a passion for food and hospitality, as well as a genuine interest in friendly and informative customer service. Expect a vibrant, educational atmosphere where you will have room to grow!
The Partisan will be attached to the Red Apron Butcher and is part of the Neighborhood Restaurant Group (NRG). NRG’s businesses include: the Evening Star Cafe, Planet Wine, Vermilion, Rustico, Buzz Bakery, Tallula, EatBar, Star Catering, Columbia Firehouse, Birch & Barley, Churchkey, GBD Chicken and Donuts, The Iron Gate Inn and Bluejacket brewery and restaurant. NRG is also directly involved in the creation and support of the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture.”

Back in November we learned of Maple’s plans to expand into the former Columbia Heights Coffee space on 11th Street. They’ve now applied for a liquor license on that space:
“Applicant is requesting to expand to the adjacent ground level space increasing the seating capacity to 66, use of the second floor with 18 seats and increase outdoor seating capacity on side walk cafe to 34 seats.”

Also in November we learned that Il Canale would be taking over the former Cannon’s Fish Market space next door. A recent liquor license application for their expansion says:
“Retailer Class “C” Restaurant with occupancy load of 88 including ENTERTAINMENT, SIDEWALK CAFÉ and SUMMER GARDEN. Requesting to expand into 1065 31st Street, NW. 1st and 2nd floors Seating to 56 and Sidewalk Café increase to 30 seats. Summer Garden increase to 150 seats. Increases total Seating Occupancy Load to 442.”

It was almost exactly two years ago that we first heard the good word that a Red Apron Butchery was coming to Penn Quarter. I had about given up hope but my spirits have revived after peeking in the window:

A Cafe Deluxe is coming to the new Hilton Garden Inn building at the corner of 22nd and M Street, NW. Their Website says:
“Cafe Deluxe, an American bistro combining the charm of a neighborhood restaurant with the energy of a bustling European eatery, serves fresh and innovative classics in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Washingtonians have enjoyed the friendly service and casual dining experience for nearly 20 years.
The diverse brunch, lunch and dinner menus combine traditional fare like Steak Frites and Grilled Meatloaf with menu favorites ranging from the Spinach, Feta and Tomato Omelet for brunch to the Grilled Atlantic Salmon Nicoise Salad, and the Fra Diavolo Mussels to the Ahi Tuna Tacos.”
You can see their full menus here. Their are currently four Cafe Deluxe restaurants in DC, MD and VA. The DC spot is located at 3228 Wisconsin Avenue, NW in upper Cleveland Park.

From a press release:
“Rapid development over the past several years, on 14th street NW, has caused various changes to the once not so favorable neighborhood. Policy being one of the first restaurants on 14th street has operated under one of the strictest Settlement Agreements, once called Voluntary Agreement. Among other things, this agreement forced them to close one hour earlier then surrounding establishments with the same type of license.
The Settlement Agreement is the agreement that the Alcohol Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) requires each liquor license establishment to negotiate with numerous groups including citizens. It has been debated that these agreements can cause unfair competition among establishments.
After four years of patiently waiting the expiration of the agreement, and a clear record to stake their claim, Policy has received permission from ABRA to operate with full operating hours. Through the diligent work of attorney Andrew Klein and ANC Commissioner Noah Smith, Policy was able to successfully renegotiate a new Settlement Agreement which now puts them on the same playing field as the surrounding restaurants. With the new agreement, Policy has the option to operate until 2am during the week and 3am on the weekends. In addition, they were also granted the ABRA extended holiday hours.”

“Dear PoPville,
Any update on the British-American pub named “Alibi” that was to open on 2nd St NW in the old My Brothers’ Place spot? It was supposed to open in December; I work right next door and it doesn’t look like anything has moved since you posted the article. Any update would be great! Thanks!”
The owner updates us:
“The cold weather set us back because we can’t do roof work when it’s below freezing. We have been organizing a new schedule to get the renovations done and it looks like we will be able to open just in time for St Patrick’s Day.”
