We first heard word that the folks from Thai-Xing would be opening up a new spot near the 9:30 Club back in 2012. Thanks to a reader for sending the photo above of the signage getting painted. We had previously learned that the space would fit 99 and:

“he will temporarily close the Florida Avenue location in order to get the new spot up and running.”

Let’s hope it’s equally as delicious as the Florida Ave location!

Future home of The American at 1209 – 1213 10th Street, NW (actually in Blagden Alley)

Thanks to a reader for sending word about these renderings for two new project coming to Blagden Alley near the Convention Center. We first learned about plans for The American back in July of last year. The description OdC Studios & Interiors says:

“With the American, we are bringing the concept of the family restaurant and the neighborhood bar to literally the backyards of the homes of the neighborhood, and most of its neighbors can just do that, they can take a stroll through the alley, and enjoy a craft beer or a hearty dish.”

Thanks to a reader for sending word:

“Looks like Clover is looking at the Newsom building. I live in the neighborhood and think this would be a great fit.”

On Clover’s website they have a post titled DC Real Estate with a photo of the once planned for Newsom building:

As you may know we’re trying to figure out DC real estate. It’s tricky. 1) We just don’t know it as well as we do Boston. 2) We’re going to be brand new. And there’s so much about what makes Clover special in Boston that has to do with our interaction with the community. We want to make sure we choose sites where we’ll be able to create that same type of deep experience in DC. So while prime office-area real estate is attractive from a sales standpoint, I’m nervous about our ability to build our brand properly in that market.

Based on advice from very experienced operators who know a lot more about DC than I do, we’re thinking it would make sense to open 2 sites: 1 that is in a more developing area, the other in an already developed area. That’s our rough thinking. We have a lot to do to figure out if this is the right direction or not.

A site became available on H street, near 10th. This is an area with an &Pizza and a Taylor Gourmet, 2 hot new chains in DC. I love the building, and there’s room to do some really creative stuff, and the trolley is just being added. Those are all exciting things. But when I shared this with a friend who knows DC really really well he said he thought it was much too gritty for us. Didn’t think it would be a good early location. DC-ers out there, what do you think?

For those not familiar with Clover, like me, they sound pretty awesome:

“Our food philosophy is driven by simplicity. I’d rather have you shocked by how delicious our turnip soup tastes than impress you with an exotic ingredient or fancy technique or flowery menu description.

We try to keep everything very simple, but very careful. If you eat with us for breakfast you know that we’re making the soup or salads in the morning and prepping for lunch. We don’t make ketchup. We don’t make Mayonnaise. We make just about everything else every day.

This is Fast Food. We’re obsessed with speed and constantly time ourselves. Our average serve times are around 3.5 minutes, which makes us a little slower than McDonald’s.

At Clover we:

– Have no freezers. In the entire company. Not one.
– Change our menu day-to-day to stay in sync with the best tasting seasonal ingredients.
– Cut food as close as we can to when you’re going to eat (e.g., tomatoes are cut when you order)
– Keep your money in your region. (40-85% of our ingredients are from the Northeast)
– Use an unheard of amount of organic ingredients (typically 30-60% depending on time of year)
– Don’t EVER use any preservatives, “natural flavors,” “flavor enhancers,” “artificial flavors”*
– Make food that will improve your health (no need to tell the kids, but that food is good for them)
– Allow you to see us making your food. We have no “back of house” anywhere in our company.
– 100% of what we hand you is compostable. OK, nothing to do with taste. But it’s the right thing to do.”

Previously we’ve learned that Cleveland Park’s Dino would be opening up in Shaw “in the vicinity of 9th and U Sts NW”. It’s been killing me trying to figure out exactly which space. On Monday Dino’s Grotto owner sends word:

We now have the keys to the new space and the redecorating starts tomorrow. It will be a quick turnaround. This is a very exciting process as the ideas we have had for a while now are put into place. It is also odd as we are doing almost nothing to the place except clean, do minor repairs, redecorate with paint, removing a lot of mirrors and disco lights, and finally moving in our furniture and equipment.

Dino’s Last Dance!

Our last night of full service with a full menu is February 23. But we will still have food in house. So we thought, why not throw a farewell party. We will just cook food ’til it’s all gone! It’s going to be more of a cocktail party with lots of food served buffet style. Some of the tables will already be gone. We will have a cash bar for beer, booze and vino. One last night to have fun. Tickets only on EventBrite. Admission at the door only if space is available. You will only be guaranteed admission if you pre-buy your ticket on Eventbrite {just hit the link below!} There will be no reservations, no assigned seating, no menus, no special requests. There will be a lot of pasta, sliced meats, prosciutto and cheeses, veggies, etc. We will just bring out food and serve you one last time! It starts at 5:30 and we will start giving you dirty looks at 9:30.

Ok “removing a lot of mirrors and disco lights” from a space in the vicinity of 9th and U St, NW – where the hell could that be? First I was thinking the former Philanthropub space but I don’t recall if they have a lot of mirrors and disco lights? I also thought the former Vegetate space, and many other subsequent incarnations at 1414 9th St, NW would be possible but that seems to far south to be considered the “vicinity of 9th and U.” So what do you guys think – what space has lots of mirrors and disco lights and has become vacant around 9th and U?

Update from a press release:

“Chef Owner Dean Gold of DINO Restaurant and Enoteca in DC’s Cleveland Park neighborhood is moving his beloved Italian restaurant across town this spring to the Shaw neighborhood into a row house on 9th St NW, just below U St. The two-story rustic Italian restaurant will be renamed DINO’S GROTTO, and is expected to open before the end of April.

The new establishment will serve approximately 120 people on two floors. The lower level will feature a large communal table alongside a 14 person bar, and table seating for 45. The 1st floor will also feature a 10 person bar and table seating for 50.

A strong believer in “sustainable foods”, Chef Dean Gold’s Italian pastas and dishes are handmade daily of fresh ingredients from local and organic farms, and sustainable fishers & butchers. Dino’s Grotto will also feature local craft brews as well as artisan Italian beers and ciders on tap, and creative cocktails at the hands of master mixologists.
