This was on a Sunday afternoon where parking is free. They block off spots then charge for them. There’s a small signed section which is for valet but even that’s only after 5pm.”
Hmm, I thought restaurants were allowed to apply for and pay for permits to do this? Anyone know if this is legit?
1917 18th St, NW
City2Cafe opened up back in the summer of 2010. That retail space is now being listed for lease:
“-FULLY BUILT restaurant – 1,250 sf
-Near popular restaurants such as Jack Rose, Regency Thai, Lauriol Plaza, Mandu, and Rosemary’s Thyme!
-Building has recently undergone an extensive renovation”
For the moment City2Cafe remains open, perhaps they’ll be able to negotiate a new lease. Any fans of City2Cafe?

816 H Street, NE
Big news about the former HR-57 and Fever Lounge space at 816 H Street, NE from the Washington Business Journal – they report Mythology Modern Chop House/Lore Lounge will open next year and:
“The “chop house” restaurant will occupy the first floor, with three levels of lounge above, including an indoor-outdoor space on the third floor and a fourth floor space that can shift concepts. Luongo envisions a beer-tasting room or a whiskey bar, depending on the season and the trends of the moment.”
Equally as interesting to me was a quote from the owner who says:
“I think where things are going with H Street, it’s going to transition away from that hipster scene to more of a mainstream, cosmopolitan, urban scene.”
1301 U Street, NW
The transformation of U Scream Ice Cream to Bin 1301 Wine Bar is nearly complete. Looks like it’ll turn into a sweet little spot. An amazing transformation if you remember what the ice cream store used to look like. Updates when construction is 100% complete and an opening date is announced. But to give a little idea, I stopped by on Saturday for a quick look:
3301 Georgia Avenue, NW
Last week we heard the STIX food truck would be opening up a brick and mortar spot in Petworth. This caused a lot of excitement and folks were eagerly awaiting word of where. Sadly the news is not that sweet. Turns out they won’t be opening up in Petworth, nor will it be a completely new spot, they’ll be serving breakfast and lunch at Mothership located at 3301 Georgia Avenue, NW. Still good news but very different from the original impression.
2007 18th Street, NW
From a press release:
“Jack Rose Dining Saloon is excited to announce the appointment of its new Executive Chef Russell Jones. A kitchen veteran of Restaurant Eve, Vinoteca and Le Paradou, Chef Jones will create and execute a menu of smaller creative share plates, playful Southern-style bar snacks, and overall complementary fare that pairs well with the restaurant’s award-winning beverage program. Chef Jones will take full helm of the kitchen on April 14th.
A South Carolina native, Jones’ love for food was inspired by early childhood travels – the taste of his first real baguette in Paris, buying chestnuts from a street vendor in London, watching butchers at work in the open-air markets. These experiences coupled with his mom’s Southern home cooking helped inspire his current “somewhat Southern, executed with French technique” culinary style. (more…)

Hearing rumors that Le Diplomate’s executive chef, Adam Schop, has either left or is leaving soon. Before Le Diplomate opened last year the Washington Post reported:
“Adam Schop. The 37-year-old chef, whose resume includes the pan-Latin Nuela in New York and the admired Zinc Bistro in Scottsdale, beat out more than a dozen serious candidates for the job – including three French chefs.”
Not sure how/if Schop’s leaving will affect the menu but will update as soon as more info is known. Le Diplomate opened up almost exactly a year ago at the corner of 14th and Q St, NW.
4433 Wisconsin Ave, NW
Jimmy John’s continues their expansion in the District. Next up – Tenleytown. Thanks to @lauradeal for tweeting us the photo above at 4433 Wisconsin Ave, NW near the Tenleytown metro. Incidentally the Jimmy John’s on G Street by Metro Center just opened.
1346 T Street, NW next to St. Ex
They were hoping for the 12th and while you might see some activity starting tomorrow, those’ll be some friends and family events – but the good news is – Compass Rose opens to the public on Wednesday:
“will officially open our doors to the public on Wed, the 16th!! I’m so excited. After a 7 month liquor license battle, a government shut down, something like 10 snow days and 2 polar vortexes-we are ready to roll.”
