Getting so close to Brookland’s Finest now – psyched to share the good news that they got their Certificate of Occupancy yesterday:

From their facebook page:

“Brookland’s Finest is a family friendly restaurant located in the Brookland neighborhood of northeast D.C.. We serve American comfort food, and we’re open for breakfast (brunch), lunch, and dinner 7 days a week opening at 7am weekdays, and 8am weekends.”

Only a few more inspections left – and you can see quite the change since we last looked inside, I’m digging the skylight:

A couple weeks ago a reader heard a Yamas Mediterranean Grill would be taking over the former Subway space at 16th/U/New Hampshire Ave, NW. I’m happy to see it’s legit – coming soon signage has been posted and their hiring:

Also happy to see they’ll be open breakfast lunch and dinner! You can see their menu here.

From a press release:

“L’Enfant Plaza, an office and retail mixed-use development owned and managed by The JBG Companies, is being readied for public reintroduction this summer after a series of transformative and extensive renovations invested over the past few years comes to fruition.

More than one dozen additional retail and dining tenants will open in coming months, bringing a new vibrancy to L’Enfant Plaza’s freshly repositioned and remarkably brighter shopping level. New destinations, such as Phillips Seafood, Amsterdam Falafel, and Red Robin’s Burger Works, will introduce even more options to customers who’ve embraced the enhanced L’Enfant Plaza food court, while a new and highly visible sculptural glass gateway will grant customers a plaza-level entrance to the shopping level. New soft seating, Wi-Fi access and more will foster a relaxed environment for office workers and tourists alike. Additional property transformations will deliver this fall, including lobby and other significant interior renovations in the office building located at 955 L’Enfant Plaza, which complements similar upgrades completed in 2012 to the office buildings at 470 and 490 L’Enfant Plaza.

Easily accessed from the bustling L’Enfant Plaza Metro station, the property’s growing list of office and retail tenants are also poised to benefit from a developing grand plan to enhance pedestrian appeal of the 10th Street corridor. Coupled with the recent launch on the plaza level of Bike and Roll, which offers bicycle and Segway tours and rentals, L’Enfant Plaza is enhancing one of the District’s primary crossroads.”

Back in November of last year I posted some scuttlebutt about a Mintwood II restaurant from owners of Mintwood Place in Adams Morgan coming to Shaw in City Market at O. Happy to see that that scuttlebutt is now confirmed! From the Washington Post:

“Restaurateur Saied Azali and chef Cedric Maupillier have signed a lease to open a second concept together, at 801 O St. NW, otherwise known as City Market at O in Shaw. Yet to be named, the 120-seat dining room will be a riff on the business partners’ popular Mintwood Place, home to American food with a French accent.”

Now the only question left is whether or not Top Chef Winner Kevin Sbraga will also be opening up a spot in Shaw?

From a press release:

“Starting May 1st, Luke himself will have the chance to greet newcomers, as well as office regulars, to that same station. Luke’s Lobster will be taking over a concession cart in the famed Outdoor Market, right outside the station’s doors.

Luke’s will be dishing its signature fresh, sustainable Maine lobster rolls, crab rolls, and shrimp rolls to the hungry masses at lunch time, and to the weary commuters starting their trek home in the evening. For the first time, Luke’s will even be open to the breakfast crowd, starting at 7 am. They’ll be selling direct trade cold-brew iced coffee from Vigilante, DC’s favorite local roaster, and are also experimenting with some delicious breakfast options sure to brighten up your walk to the office (you’ll have to visit to see what the test kitchen has come up with).

The team is honored and excited for the opportunity to hock its wares in such a historic site where so many great vendors, large and small, have gone before them. And since they travel back and forth between DC, New York, Philly, and Maine so often, they know as well as anyone how rewarding it will be to have a fantastic, fresh meal as your light at the end of the tunnel.
Luke’s at Union Station Outdoor market will be open Monday through Saturday, 7 am to 7 pm, May 1 through October 31.”

Thanks to a reader for sending word about Thaiphoon’s sign:

“Appears to have been a small fire in the sign outside…a couple of the letters are gone with small scorch stain..nothing serious.”

Not clear if the damage this time was a result of lightning but Thaiphoon just might have the worst luck when it comes to their sign. Back in August 2010 their sign was hit by lightning and they lost one of their Os. You can see a photo of that damage here.

Update from 2010 photographer Captain Easychord – not a lightning strike:

“FYI: I’m the one who took the 2010 picture (got another one this morning too… going for the complete set!)… I checked in with the folks at Thaiphoon after the “o” fire of 2010 and that one wasn’t caused by a lightning strike. The lights on the sign are illuminated 24/7 (you can see this if you look closely mid-day). During heavy rains on the morning of the first fire, water got into one of these lights and caused it to short out and catch fire. Lightning didn’t really make sense if you looked at the taller buildings all around Thaiphoon. The only reason I speculated about it back then was because of the super close lightning strikes we did have that morning. I suspect today’s fire was also related to water in the lights…”
