Subterranean Sakuramen now sees the light! Almost exactly a year ago we learned that Sakuramen would be expanding into the former Botanica Yemaya space upstairs. For those not familiar with the deliciousness at Sakuramen – you can check out their menu here. I’m told that the new upstairs space is opening up soon, possibly today. Check out the great new mural done by Henley Bounkhong, a self-taught ballpoint pen artist, aka Golden Rabbit Silent Monkey:

Back in August we learned that the owner of Tico at 14th and U, Michael Schlow, was bringing a new restaurant to the former Kushi space that has been closed since Sept. 2014. A new liquor license placard has been posted at the former Kushi space for Alta Strada:

“Restaurant serving Italian food with a seating capacity of 150. Total occupancy load of 199. Requesting a sidewalk cafe with a seating capacity of 50 and entertainment endorsement.”

You can see Alta Strada’s menu from Massachusetts here. Updates as they get closer to opening.

“Dear PoPville,

Any chance you or readers any updates on what is going on with https://www.popville.com/2015/01/dc-conscious-cafe-close-to-opening-on-h-street-ne/DC Conscious Cafe on H St?
I live nearby and have been hoping it would open for months. Wondering if the project is defunct and will taunt me with the welcoming facade until someone else buys the property, or if it might actually open?”

and another reader simply asks: “Is Bab Korean ever going to open?”

All good questions. Seems like a lot of money was spent on renovations so it’s bizarre both projects seem stalled for so long. Anyone hear anything?

A reader reports:

“Another new bar/restaurant for Rhode Island Ave. They don’t have food yet but they’re open for beer and cocktails. They have a few house brewed drafts that were pretty good. They’re also doing a no tipping policy and choosing to pay a fair wage to wait staff.”
