From the owners of Bar Pilar:

“On Friday, October 2nd, placards were posted at Bar Pilar. We are exploring the opportunity to expand the restaurant to include a roof deck bar area with additional outside seating. Plans for the expansion are still in the very early stages.

Bar Pilar has been a part of the 14th Street community for the past decade, and we take the responsibility of being good neighbors very seriously. We invite our neighbors in the 14th Street corridor to join us at 6pm the evening of November 15th upstairs at the restaurant for an informational open house, where we will happily share plans for the project as it stands now and address any questions or concerns at that time.

In the meantime, we look forward to continuing to provide a great neighborhood spot to eat, drink and gather with friends.”

Thanks to Matthew Orbin for sending. It’s been a long time since we heard anything about Union Social. I had about given them up for dead – but they look real close to opening – even posted their taps on their facebook page:

“Sneak peek of our 20 Tap Beer Selection!”

“Union Social is a DC Metro inspired casual, fine dining restaurant featuring a scratch kitchen and craft bar.”

Standby for an opening date.

It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about the former Pines of Florence space turning into a new Japanese restaurant called Ogawa. While they (owners of the incredibly awesome Sushi Capitol on Capitol Hill) had hoped to open many months ago – we actually have real progress. They’ve applied for a liquor license that says:

Traditional Japanese Sushi and Washoku Sushi in addition to fish and vegetable. Seating capacity of 56 and Total Occupancy Load of 75.”

I’ve emailed the owners to get a new opening date – standby. A peek inside is very promising (to my mural loving heart):

This could be awesome. Their website says:

“We love good food, and we know you do too. We wanted to make you amazing Indian food, but thought, why get held down by conventional standards? Our team at Curry & Pie is bringing you combinations of all of our favorite foods in ways you’ve never expected. We started with two classics and turned them into one out-there fusion menu, featuring Indian curries, fresh baked pizzas and even more tasty eats in between. We focus on good food made in creative ways in a friendly and low-key environment. From mid-week work lunches to family dinners to late night takeout, Curry & Pie is your new neighborhood spot. Life is short, don’t waste it on boring food.”

Check out their menu here.

A bit of an update on yesterday’s great news about the Latin Wine Bar coming to Upshur Street in the Riyad Market space. Back in July I had posted about a Latin American Wine Bar coming to Georgia Ave (see photo above.) These are the same folks. Sadly/happily the deal for the Georgia Ave space fell through. Stay tuned for updates on the Upshur space as construction commences.

Ed. Note: I do not have a good memory.

carnitas

And in pork news, back in January I broke the news of Chipotle’s pork shortage. An update from the chain:

“Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) today announced that it has restored most of its pork supply and is again serving Carnitas in 90 percent of its restaurants. The company expects to have Carnitas back in all of its restaurants by the end of November. (more…)

Thanks to a reader for sending photos and word from the Washington Business Journal:

Bird Kitchen & Cocktails will be a 50-seat restaurant with an additional 25-seat sidewalk cafe and a 25-seat beer garden in back. Robinson hopes it will become a quintessential neighborhood spot, and has even been taking requests via Facebook for what beers to put on tap.”

oya

Don Rockwell confirms the news that’s been rumored for a while – Oya has closed at 777 9th Street, NW. Oya’s website says:

“OYA IS TRANSFORMING…BOE

After more than a decade OYA is closing a chapter on Sept 20 and reopening a new chapter in Winter 2015 as BOE.

We were the venue for numerous celebrations, met wonderful families, made forever relationships, and so many wonderful employees, managers and chefs. There are simply too many people to say thank you to and so many incredible experiences to recount.
