From an email:
“The neighborhood restaurant Brookland’s Finest, co-owned by Tony Tomelden, John Solomon and chef/partner Shannan Troncoso, is getting close to selling their 30,000th Colonel Burger. The sandwich, named for Colonel Brooks, who was an early 20th century developer of the Brookland neighborhood, is made with certified Angus beef, and topped with pickled onions, Tillamook cheddar, Applewood smoked bacon, and served on a brioche bun with a side of tempura onion rings. To celebrate, the restaurant will present the guest who ends up ordering the 30,000th burger (anticipated sometime this month) with a golden safety pin, and make a donation in their name to one of three charities — TAPS, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, the Washington Jesuit Academy, or a charity of the guest’s choosing.“

“¡Hola, Mezcalero!
Mezcalero Cocina Mexicana, the highly anticipated second restaurant concept from Chef Alfredo Solis and his sister Jessica, will open Friday, January 13. Mezcalero opens on the heels of its sister restaurant, El Sol, being named the top favorite cheap eat of 2016 by Washington Post food critic and “$20 Diner,” Tim Carman.

Mezcalero will feature some dishes from El Sol, but will also showcase more flavors Chef Solis came to love growing up in Mexico City. Included on its menu are 17 different street tacos, a selection of Guisados, or Mexican stews and Tacos de Canasta, or “basket of tacos,” the popular soft, steamed tacos sold on the streets of Mexico D.F. Additionally, as the restaurant’s name implies, Mezcalero will have an extensive mezcal menu with craft cocktails created by head bartender Arturo Zaloga. (more…)

I’m not gonna do a poll this week, I’m just curious where your favorite spots are because lately I’ve been loving Thai Pad (pictured above.) Where are your favorite spots and equally as important do they deliver? Or have the delivery apps made that part of the question moot? Anyway, where’s your favorite spot and how are the prices?

From an email:
“‘Pizza Jawn’ Comes to DC with Marjorie Meek-Bradley
· A Jawn? A Philly slang term basically used to describe any single person, place or thing. But in this instance, it means a super awesome exclusive guest chef pizza collaboration available for a limited time.
· TODAY, Marjorie Meek-Bradley will be in Pizzeria Vetri slinging pie with Marc Vetri and announcing her guest chef creation, the DC Rising prepared with roasted peppers and onions, cheddar and jack cheese, half smoke and crispy shallot rings – which will be available 1/5-1/15.”

So, half smoke on a pizza – yes or no? I am intrigued!

This is the former pizzeria and hookah bar near Highlands Cafe. Thanks to a reader for sending word:
“Excited to have some (hopefully) good Greek food in the neighborhood!”
They also send more details from Rob Pigott who runs the Community Alliance for Upper 14th Street:
“The 4700 block of 14th St NW will have a new restaurant opening it’s doors this coming weekend…..I stopped by last evening and met the owners of the ATHENA GRILL. The business owners are the same family who operates La Villa Pizzeria (located at 14th & Crittenden). I expect that they will open their doors no later than March.
Also, on that same block (two doors down), Las Placitas will be opening, hopefully BEFORE March.”
Updates as they get closer to opening.

660 Pennsylvania Ave, SE
From a press release:
“ABOUT JOSELITO CASA DE COMIDAS: Joselito Casa de Comidas, located at 660 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, was created by Javier Candon to bring a piece of Spain to the Eastern Market neighborhood of Capitol Hill. It is an intimate 70 seat eatery reminiscent of the timeless establishments found throughout Spain at the turn of the century.
The restaurant will hold a “soft opening” from Monday, January 9 to Sunday, January 15. During these days, we will offer guests a 20 percent discount on our food. From Monday, January 9 to Wednesday, January 11, we will be open only for dinner from 5:30- 10 p.m. Beginning Thursday, January 12, we will be open daily for lunch and dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and from 11:30 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
OUR INSPIRATION: The restaurant is an homage to Javier’s late father, José, who enjoyed long, leisurely family meals at restaurants that had an “old school” feel and a warm, casual, and inviting ambiance. “Joselito” was José’s childhood nickname, as well as the name of one of his favorite bullfighters (Joselito el Gallo) and a popular child actor in the 50s in Spain (José Jiménez Fernández).
OUR CUISINE: Our menu features traditional family recipes from Spain, but prepared with the modern techniques of today. Most of the dishes on the menu are offered in three sizes—tapa (equivalent to an appetizer size), media ración (entree) and ración (family style portion)—so that guests can craft their own culinary journey.
HEMINGWAY HOUR: We offer our “Hemingway Hour” daily from 4-7 in the evening. Guests can enjoy everything on the menu with a 20 percent discount. (more…)
