From a press release:

“Chef Reid Shilling, who brings with him 19 years of industry experience at top-tier restaurants including The Dabney and Bouchon Bistro in Yountville, CA announces the opening of Shilling Canning Company, located at The Yards. Shilling’s first restaurant concept will offer a rustic combination of Mid-Atlantic cooking and Californian finesse. Located on the ground floor of the luxury Arris Apartments at The Yards, Shilling Canning Company is on target to open in early 2018.

Shilling Canning Company will work with local growers and purveyors to source the best in fresh ingredients from the Mid Atlantic, from proteins that will be butchered in house, to seafood carefully selected from local fisherman. The restaurant is named for Shilling Canning Company, a small canning business that Shilling’s family operated in Maryland from 1935-1958.

Lending a classic, comfortable setting for dining, Shilling Canning Company will offer seating for 75 guests. A centrally-placed open kitchen with a wood-fired brick oven, and a wood-burning grill, will house ample counter seating offering guests an up-close experience. Fresh herbs and produce for the menu will be grown in the restaurant’s large garden patio, which will also offer outdoor seating and a view of the waterfront.

“For nearly 25 years, Shilling Cannery Company was at the core of my family’s life in Maryland, and this restaurant is a tribute to the work and care they put into the land and the care with which they created their products,” said Shilling. “I’m excited to bring my experience and my background together to create an incredible dining experience that highlights the great products of our region here on the waterfront in the nation’s capital.”

Gut renovation is already underway. The liquor license placard is listed for Garden State thought that name will change. Details are sparse from the placard but more details should be coming soon(ish):

“A new Tavern serving traditional pub food. Seating capacity of 63 inside. Total Occupancy Load of 99. Summer Garden with 97 seats. The Tavern will include Entertainment with a Cover Charge.”

Thanks to Justin for sending this article from the Washington Post about a restaurant banning kids under the age of 5:

“The ban — conceived by the restaurant’s owner, Pasquale Caruso — has led to a dramatic increase in reservations, said Nunez, who said Caruso’s has seen a spike in diners, from about 50 per day to around 80.

It’s hard to say whether child bans are officially a restaurant industry trend, but they’re no longer particularly unusual. Caruso’s — which describes itself as “traditional, classy, intimate” on its website — is the latest in a series of eateries to ban children or introduce measures to control them.”

How do you tell if a kid is 4, 5 or 6 years old? Anyway, let’s go to the polls!

I won’t apologize for being an Adams Morgan booster!! I told you not to sleep on Adams Morgan!! OK, I’ll calm down but I’m very, very happy. A reader reports:

“Oppa Dak coming to the old Meskerem in Adams Morgan. Signage is up.”

We’ve heard tons about Korean Fried Chicken but this is the first I’m hearing about Korean Baked Chicken. A website called Zen Kimchi writes about a spot in Korea:

“Oppadak – which translates to the cute Korean saying “Big brother chicken” (the full name actually translates to “The chicken that fell out of the oven”). This chain of chicken restaurants are all over Seoul and after eating their chicken, I understand completely why. The chicken is that good!”

It’s not clear if there is any relation to the chain at this point, but presumably the style of chicken will be the same. Stay tuned for updates!!

Zenebech-Injera
608 T Street, NW

Uh hell yes!!! Huge potential news from Zenebech:

“Hey everyone! We are thinking of opening in Adams Morgan and would love to get your thoughts!”

Zenebech Injera closed back in October to make room for a big new development coming next to the Howard Theatre. Looks like Shaw’s loss will be Adams Morgan gain! Hope they find a good space in Adams Morgan.

There has been an Ethiopian resurgence in Adams Morgan, while Meskerem closed, Quara and Ababa have opened and Adams Morgan Restaurant and Cafe added Ethiopian dishes. Nevertheless I believe a Zenebech revival here would a huge addition to the 18th Street strip.

Back in October I shared the good news that it looked like a Cave Grill would be coming to the prime corner location at 6th and H St, NE (the opened and closed sports bar for a hot second.) Happy to say that is now confirmed and set to open in the Fall!!

The Domku to Taqueria del Barrio transformation is complete and it is dope!!

Taqueria del Barrio – Menu

From a press release:

“Taqueria del Barrio, an authentic Mexican taqueria, will open its doors on Thursday, March 30 serving house-made regional Mexican dishes and drinks in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest. Diners can choose from 14 types of tacos served on tortillas made in-house, three specialty ‘torta’ sandwiches, and additional traditional Mexican foods, served in a modern, casual dining room and bar.

Taqueria del Barrio’s menu was developed by Chef and Owner Anna Bran-Leis and General Manager Mikey Torres, and is centered around $3 tacos in classic styles like carne asada, pescado, and al pastor varieties served alongside less-familiar options like nopales – grilled cactus paddle served with melted Oaxacan cheese. Appetizers include elote with a chili-lime aioli and cotija cheese, and beef albondigas cooked in a smoky chipotle salsa. Entrées range from $12 to $15 and include traditional Mexican dishes like chile relleno –poblano peppers stuffed with barbacoa, tomatoes, onions, and queso freso; and mole con pollo with made-from-scratch mole, blended with nuts, chiles, and a subtle hint of chocolate. While Taqueria del Barrio is opening with a lunch and dinner menu, a unique brunch menu is expected to roll out in the coming months. (more…)
