Thanks to all who messaged me about The Root’s Washington, DC’s El Centro D.F. Restaurant Removes ‘No Sneaker’ Policy, Fires Racist Bouncer After Black Man Is Denied Entry:

“Days after a black man, Brian Gordon, was denied entry to Richard Sandoval’s El Centro D.F. restaurant in Washington, D.C., because he was wearing sneakers, even though white patrons wearing sneakers were allowed entry, Ayyaz Rashid, managing partner of the Sandoval Restaurant Group, informed The Root that the bouncer who denied Gordon entry has been fired. In addition to firing the racist bouncer, the restaurant has removed its “no sneaker” policy.”

Read the full report here.

Ed. Note: We previously spoke about a similar dress code policy at another Richard Sandoval restaurant, Masa 14, back in March 2015.

Thanks to Hannah for sending:

“A coworker told me that a new location of Rice Bar had popped up near my workplace and I went today to check it out. The employees said that it opened last Monday and I heard a lot of people in the store say “I had no idea this was here!” So it seems like they didn’t get the word out enough (and should! Rice Bar is awesome). 1206 G St NW across from the Macy’s.”

Ed. Note: Rice Bar also has locations at 1015 15th St NW, 1020 19th St NW, 600 Maryland Ave SW and 409 3rd St SW (and one is coming to Crystal City too.) You can see their full menus here.

Uh oh, thanks to Mark and Steve for messaging about On Rye being papered over in Chinatown. Almost exactly a year ago I declared On Rye legit. Their website is still active, you can see their menu here. On December 21st they changed their Business Hours on Facebook, which is sometimes not a good sign. I’ve left messages and will update when I hear back. On Rye only opened in November of 2016 so hopefully this is just some minor renovation but history tells us otherwise. STAY TUNED.

Thanks to Theresa for passing on the good (depending upon where you live/work) news from the MOTH listserv:

“A few days ago we saw Helen at the old Lawson’s Deli! She starts paying rent in February and is hoping the renovation of the space is done by then and the bagel ovens are in. She’s been looking for 2 years and had no luck on the hill but you will soon be able to enjoy bagels from Bagels and Baguettes at the corner of 10th and New York Ave NW (the building is actually 901 New York Avenue – same as Acadiana near City Center).”
