“This morning I saw these new signs outside of the old Bar Civita restaurant.”
Bar Civita closed back in July. Previously this was home to Murphy’s, which still leaves a bit of a whole in my heart. Anyway, next up is Mayahuel Cocina Mexicana:
“Mayahuel Cocina Mexicana is brought to you by the team behind District Kitchen in the same historic neighborhood of Woodley Park, Washington D.C.”

2606 Connecticut Ave, NW
“Pronounced (ma’jawel), she is the female divinity of the maguey (agave) plant and protector of fertility. As there are various myths of this ancient Aztec tale, one is that from Mayahuel’s buried bones the first maguey plant was born. The maguey plant produces a sweet milky nectar, or aguamiel, then fermented and becoming pulque. Mezcal also comes from the agave plant by the way of roasting its pineapple shaped heart (pina), mashing, fermenting, then distilling. Tequila is made from blue agave plants. The ancient Aztecs believed that the maguey plant was magical and that the sweet sap carried properties that comforted the souls of those who have lost someone dear to their heart. (more…)

From Republic Kolache:
“We’re super excited to announce we’re (finally) opening a brick & mortar storefront. And this goes way deeper than just kolaches.
Meet Republic Cantina, a full-service Tex-Mex restaurant (launching Summer 2018) and specializing in all the Tex-Mex classics done right for the first time in DC! (+ some creative spins as well)

We’ve signed a lease in a beautiful historic building in DC’s Truxton Circle neighborhood, where we will turn out sizzlin’ brisket fajitas, light, fluffy housemade flour tortillas, supple, cheesy enchiladas, puffy tacos, honey-drizzled sopapillas, frozen margaritas & more, all the long day. “Dear PoPville,
I heard Straw, Stick, and Brick Delicatessen on Georgia Ave is re-opening. It’d be so great if that was true. SSB had great food and was a kinda fun place to meet Petworth and Brightwood Park neighbors.
I was wondering if you might know whether the re-opening rumors are true?”
What I’ve learned is that the business was sold, name and all, back in September. Now I don’t know if the new owners have decided to keep the name or not but since they bought it and already have the nice awning – I’m guessing they’ll keep the name. As to what the new Straw Stick & Brick will be – obviously there will be a major food component but I think there will also be a major coffee component. So to sum up – new owners will be opening something here soon that may or may not be named Straw Stick & Brick. And there may be coffee. STAY TUNED.

From a press release:
“Following thirteen years of making locally-sourced, seasonal gelato and specialty coffee drinks in DC, Dolcezza’s ninth cafe introduces savory breakfast items and new desserts to its offerings at the Wharf.
Co-owners Robb Duncan and Violeta Edelman aim to create a space that will remain lively throughout the day, to be enjoyed by district locals and visitors alike. “The opening of the Wharf is a game-changer for the DC dining scene,” says Duncan. “We’re excited to have neighbors like Requin, Kaliwa, even The Anthem — and are looking forward to joining the local dining conversation with more options.” Those options include Southern-inspired biscuit sandwiches with fried chicken or eggs and bacon, steak and egg breakfast bowls, huevos rancheros, and more. All is not lost my Cleveland Park cousins – while Ripple was a big loss – Al Volo to the rescue!! I stopped by on Saturday and was told they soft opened Friday night (early word on the Cleveland Park listserve is that they are understandably working out a few kinks in service but the food was delicious and the folks were incredibly friendly, and they were kid friendly too.) I personally can confirm the kindness of the people there. It’s very easy to tell when folks are genuinely nice and I’m happy to say that was evident here. Also the space really looks terrific:

Al Volo’s current hours are 5-10pm Sunday to Thursday and 5pm to midnight Friday and Saturday. In about a month they’ll be opening up for brunch and lunch as well as a to-go pasta bar. Updates when that happens, in the meantime check out lots more photos after the jump. (more…)
