“Dear PoPville,

Have you heard anything about the closure of Five Guys in Terminal C (adjacent to gate 37) at DCA? I travel frequently for work, but haven’t flown from DCA in about a month; when I was last here in mid-December it was still open. The Five Guys sign is still up in the terminal, and both Five Guys and DCA’s websites still list this location as being active, but as you can see from the photos it’s been enclosed by a construction barrier.”

Thanks to Jessica for reporting:

“FYI, Zen Taco opened today.

Had the taco chinos; I’d give it a solid B. The same owners and staff as Custom Fuel, which is nice to see. Clearly some first day kinks to work out, but should be a great addition to the neighborhood. And their prices seem a bit lower than the menu online for the NYC location.

Also – they have frozen margaritas!”

“After almost 20 years in business, Cafe Ole will be closing on January 31st. Fannie Mae is moving downtown and the building is being redeveloped. It has been a great run and we would like to thank all of our customers for making it such a success. Please come by for a last meal and a toast to the future!

Cafe Ole is currently located at 4000 Wisconsin Avenue, NW. We are looking for a new home!”

The pop-up is set to open on January 22 and run until February 16.

Cassava Boba will be serving up five different flavors of bubble tea including their fan favorite “Milk Tea” for five dollars a drink and will introduce their seasonal “Chocolate Chai” priced at six dollars. Awkpie will be dishing out sweet and savory hand-pies priced at seven dollars. Among them are “The Babe,” a pulled pork pie with goat cheese, pickled ginger and blackberry jam, and “The Gumbo,” filled with chicken and sausage gumbo and rice pudding. Visitors can also expect to be able to purchase a Tea and Pie Combo for ten dollars; perfect for an on-the-go breakfast, light lunch or afternoon treat. (more…)

Back in June we shared some scuttlebutt about a new Cuban restaurant coming to half of Delicia’s Market at 14th and Quincy St, NW. A new liquor license placard confirms it as Little Havana:

“New Class “C” Restaurant serving Latino-American cuisine. Total Occupancy Load of 60 and seating for 60. Sidewalk Café with 12 seats.”

This ought add another wrinkle to the friendly Taqueria Habanero vs Mezcalero rivalry.

Stay tuned for more on Little Havana as they get closer to opening.

hahaha awesome – thanks to Joan for sending: “Nice mentions of Petworth and Bloomingdale. Very curious to know who the “beguiling cast of locals…” at Showtime are…” The New York Times‘ latest take on what to do in D.C.:

“No longer does the city dubbed “the swamp” by its inhabitant in chief have the starchy, insular appearance of a white male fiefdom. There’s a dynamism that, along with its fabled history, qualifies it as a great American city.”

We’ve finally made it, baby, we’ve finally made it!! Ed. Note: /sarcasm/. But seriously some good recs here for those who’ve never been to the District. Himitsu really is awesome and I need to hit Primrose stat.

From a press release:

Dorjee Momo is creating a more permanent home for Tibetan fare in DC with the opening of its residency in Bullfrog Bagels Eastern Market beginning January 27. This follows six months of private home dinners, events like Emporiyum and Illuminasia Festival, pop-ups at Thip Khao and Sally’s Middle Name, and lunch service at Dupont Circle’s Shop Made In DC.

“I am so excited to share the foods that I learned to make as a child in Tibet, and to play with the flavors and ingredients from places I have traveled to,” says Chef Dorjee Tsering. “When I cook with my team here, it gives me the feeling that I’m back with my family.”

A former Buddhist monk and Tibetan refugee, Dorjee has lived in Tibet, China, Nepal, and India. He spent years cooking across those countries and creating his own memories of flavors that are so often nostalgic for many. A few years after arriving in DC, he started Dorjee Momo out of Union Kitchen with his wife and business partner Amberjade Tsering. (more…)
