2210 14th Street, NW between W and Florida Ave

Grady’s is finally here!! All the details from the owners:

“Grady’s is a comfortable and inviting spot with excellent food that we’ve created for our neighbors.

The neighborhood around 14th and Florida has grown rapidly over the last 5 years. The goal of Grady’s is to provide a warm, friendly and comfortable neighborhood restaurant for our local residents that may not be interested in the frenzy or trendiness that much of 14th St. has to offer. For Grady’s, the Chef is designing approachable seasonal menus featuring local ingredients with a focus on steaks and wild game meats.

The downstairs bar itself is originally from a ghost town in Nevada and was painstakingly moved here piece by piece. The upstairs bar is a laid back scene with darts and tables that are ideal for poker, if that kind of thing should ever break out. The Bar program features old and new. Mostly local craft beers are on tap and in bottle/can but customers will find familiar brands too (for instance Budweiser is on tap) New and classic cocktails feature many of the ingredients that would have been found behind the bar when it was first built. From a press release:

“JBG SMITH Properties (NYSE: JBGS), a leading owner and developer of high-quality, mixed use properties in the Washington, DC market, is thrilled to announce that Mission, a popular Mexican bar and eatery, will open this summer in the Capitol Riverfront District in Southeast Washington. Mission will be owned by Fritz Brogan and Reed Landry of the Mission Group, and will build on the group’s successful track record with Mission-Dupont and Hawthorne on U Street. Mission will open in the summer of 2018 in the flagship retail space of JBG SMITH’S new 1221 Van Street multi-family project, located steps from the main entrance to Nationals Park and four blocks from DC United’s new stadium at Audi Field.

The food and drink menu at Mission’s Capitol Riverfront location will be similar to that of Mission-Dupont, which opened in 2014. Food selections will include twelve taco options, huaraches, elote loco, nachos and flautas, among many other offerings. The two-level space will encompass more than 10,000 square feet of interior space, an expansive 350-foot wraparound second-floor outdoor balcony, plus a two-story glass storefront overlooking the stadium entrance. “Dear PoPville,

I am looking for a regular diner – I’ve been in DC for three years but I haven’t quite found what I’m looking for. Do you have any recommendations?? Back in NY, there’s a family owned Greek diner on almost every block, do we have that here? Doesn’t have to be Greek, obviously, but small and family owned is a plus. An actual diner, not whatever that boujee bag of lies is on 18th. I’m looking for a place for an omelette, breakfast potatoes, coffee in a beige ceramic cup, soup when you’re sick, and hopefully paper place mats that have ads for local lock smiths. Mt Pleasant/Columbia Heights/Petworth/16th Street Heights please!!”

Ed. Note: I wouldn’t exactly call the Diner on 18th a “boujee bag of lies” though that is a phenomenal line (maybe Unconventional Diner…) Anyone know the current deal at American City Diner? As for omelette, breakfast potatoes, coffee – how about the IHOP? It’s a chain but locally owned. I’m gonna tweet George Pelecanos to see if he has any recommendations for proper Greek Diners. Stay tuned.

1627 K Street, NW

Ken reports:

“I noticed that construction workers were putting up signage at the old Eatsa place at 17th/K NW. According to the signs, it’s a place called Taqueria/Local Taqueria. Their website just has a coming soon and a way to apply for jobs. Hopefully it’ll last longer than Eatsa!”

Eatsa’s “fully-automated faster food experience” closed back in October. Updates as the Taqueria gets closer to opening.

1708 L Street, NW

Stone Fish Grill opened in the former Balletto space at 17th and L Street, NW back in 2013.

From Stonefish’s Website:

A few weeks ago we learned that Naan and Beyond was moving from L Street to Vermont Ave in the former Juice Joint space.

Apparently they’ve also opened a food truck in the interim:

McCandless, born in Chile and Perez, from Mexico, want to celebrate their love of Latin food with this new restaurant which will include authentic Mexican street food and traditional favorites. (more…)

1001 Connecticut Ave, NW

Ken reports:

“Signage has gone up for a new Smoothie King in Farragut North in the building near the Connecticut/K entrance. This is next to the Starbucks and the Pret.”

RIP that old magazine/newspaper store – what was it called again? News World.
