From DDOT:

“As part of Mayor Bowser’s ongoing effort to reimagine outdoor space in the District, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily close 18th Street NW between Kalorama Road NW and Columbia Road NW to all vehicular traffic during specified periods between Friday, June 26 and Sunday, June 28.

The pilot closure not only supports social distancing as the District continues its response to coronavirus (COVID-19), but also provides more recreational and social opportunities for businesses and the public. Approved restaurants and retail businesses can take advantage of expanded outdoor seating and operations to serve residents and visitors. Cyclists and pedestrians can enjoy additional space in the roadway to travel in both directions along 18th Street NW.

DDOT Traffic Control Officers will be in place throughout the area to direct all modes of traffic. The street will be closed during the timeframes below: (more…)

At the end of last month we broke the news that things were not looking good for the Post Pub. The Post’s Tim Carman breathed an ounce of hope but sadly that didn’t work out. This morning the Post Pub writes:

“I am sad to inform our customers and friends that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related factors I am forced to close the Post Pub permanently. There’s simply no other option.

To all of our long time loyal customers, I can only say thank you!! More of you than I can name came in almost every day. You were the biggest part of the Post Pub family. A special thanks to the Washington Post employees who helped us pay a lot of bills over the years!

To my employees: I am sorry it ended so abruptly and that you must now look for employment elsewhere. After 43+ years in the same spot, it is hard for me to say goodbye. I am most proud of the fact that three people worked at the Pub for over 30 years and six people for over 20 years. That tells me it really was more than just a business, it was a family. (more…)

Thanks to Annie for reporting: “Mercy Me DC is officially open in West End. It’s inside the newly renovated version of the Wink hotel (Yours Truly). Seems like they’re doing a modified menu for now but they’re serving up Call Your Mother bagels, pastries etc and pizza starting at lunch. Can confirm it’s delicious!” (more…)

Yesterday afternoon we shared some scuttlebutt about Adams Morgan’s Wawa likely closing next month. Turns out it’ll be sooner than that. A reader reports: “Just wanted to let you know that I confirmed Wawa is closing this coming Sunday for good. Sounds as though all employees will be transferred to other locations.”

Ed. Note: Some of the staff will likely be moved to the coming Thomas Circle location.

Update: Another reader hears closing “July 5th a manger told me yesterday. They are blaming it on Coronavirus and moving staff to NEW Thomas Circle store.”

Prior to Wawa this space was home to BicycleSpace, who was only here briefly, and also Slaviya and also Leftbank back in the day, Cities.

Updates when we learn what becomes of the space.
