1781 Florida Ave, NW

Thanks to Tim for passing on the terrible news from Pleasant Pops:

“We are saddened to announce that we will be closing our doors on Sunday, November 29, 2020 due to a vacate notice. After a successful 8 years of business, it is with a heavy heart that we announce our departure from our flagship location. Thank you to the Adams Morgan community — a community that has so generously and graciously given us endless memories and a place to call home.

Although we are grief stricken by this unexpected news, we are determined to rise above the barriers and reemerge Pleasant Pops with a new, but familiar concept. (more…)

From a press release:

“The Stay Inn DC: Delivering quality food to you when it is best for you to stay in.

Starting tomorrow, November 3rd, the team behind Moreland’s Tavern is excited to launch our latest concept – The Stay Inn DC. We understand that we cannot bring the entire Moreland’s Tavern experience to you; however, we can try to help by delivering some of your favorite foods to you when the weather is just not pleasant enough to motivate you to leave your house.

Our new concept, The Stay Inn, will have a menu that includes salads, appetizers, sandwiches, desserts and even beer and wine. (more…)

1025 1st Street, SE via Roys Boys

Ed. Note: Roys Boys opened in the former Justin’s space in August 2019.

Thanks to all who passed on from Roys Boys (Navy Yard) on Saturday:

“We are sorry to inform you that our Navy Yard location will be closed from now on. We are so thankful for your support, but it has been too hard to keep going through Covid. The party continues at our Shaw location, please see us. We love you and thank you!” (more…)

Thanks to John for passing on the very sad report from Johnny’s Half Shell (back in August it looked like a reopening was in the works, alas):

“‘just give me one thing that i can hold onto
to believe in this livin’
is just a hard way to go’

Johnny’s Half Shell opened June 21, 1999 in Dupont Circle, and today we let you know that our last meal was served on March 14th, 2020. (more…)

Really, hopefully temporary sad news, from the really good people at Boundary Stone:

“Since March we have fought to be here for our employees and our neighborhood, which we have faithfully served for the past nine years. Thank you to everyone who has supported Boundary Stone and have been so generous to our staff. It truly has been impactful and has allowed us to delay having to write something like this for the last 8 months. Unfortunately with colder weather moving in, rising virus counts, and no relief on the horizon, we have made the truly agonizing decision to close Boundary Stone until further notice.

We will remain open until Wed Nov 25th when we will celebrate our 10th annual Thanksgiving tradition and end this epic run with our showing of The Last Waltz. We cannot predict what the future holds for gathering places like Boundary Stone, but we are hopeful that we will be welcoming you all again at some point. (more…)

From an email:

“excited to share that both AKO by KENAKI and State Fair are opening this week at The Roost.

First, State Fair – the frozen custard and sundae shop from Buzz Bakeshop pastry chef Allie Cheppa – is open tomorrow after a soft opening this past weekend. Menu is pasted at the bottom of this email. We’re also offering a free custard cup for kids with the purchase of a sundae to celebrate opening weekend (available this Fri-Sun). State Fair is open Thursdays – Saturdays from 4 to 8 PM and Sundays from 12 to 4 PM.

Then on Friday, AKO by KENAKI will open. Chef Ken Ballogdajan and his sister Aki will focus on sushi and raw fish preparations for their counter at The Roost. The hours will be Wed-Fri from 4 to 10 PM; Saturdays from noon to 10 PM; and Sundays from noon to 8 PM.

As is the case with the other stalls, guests can order from all available menus via QR code on their phones while seated (inside or out) or for carryout.”

Ed. Note: This follows yesterday’s news about nearby neighbor, Declaration “temporarily pausing operations.”

This is a stinger. Last week a reader excitedly wrote in “Hazel is open!”. Alas yesterday they posted on their Instagram:

“Friends and neighbors, our last 2020 dinner service will be this Saturday, October 31st, as we prepare to close for the winter. We have truly enjoyed welcoming you back to the patio these past few weeks, and hope to see your familiar faces these next few nights. (more…)
