Thanks to all who sent links about this huge news coming to Shaw. The Post’s Tom Sietsema shares the great details:

Smitten by trips to southern Spain in recent years, Derek Brown, one of the region’s top drinks authorities, is planning to replicate some of his experiences with a new bar here at home. Mockingbird Hill, expected to open in May at 1843 Seventh St. NW. in Shaw, will have a narrow but intriguing focus: lots of sherries and abundant hams, or “nibbling rather than dining,” Brown says, distinguishing his Spanish vision from that of Washington’s popular tapas restaurants, Estadio and Jaleo.

Another reader notes the emergence of a possible Sherry trend in our future…

More info on Mockingbird Hill as they get closer to opening.

A reader sends word:

Heads up – DC Fish Carry Out [where MPD had previously found large quantities of crack cocaine] on the corner of 14th and Otis closed, it looks like they are planning on turning it into a Mexican restaurant… I live nearby so I’ve been hearing a ton of construction, I asked the guys inside today and they told me about the restaurant. They said it should be open in a couple weeks.

3162 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW

We first heard Beau Thai would be opening a second location in Mt. Pleasant back in July 2012. More recently in Sept. 2012 we saw they applied for a liquor license and sidewalk cafe. I was happy to see an update on their Facebook page:

Opening in the heart of the vibrant Mount Pleasant neighborhood in mid-February 2013!!

We’re making the final edits to our new Mt. Pleasant menu. With our expansive new kitchen, we’re excited to be able to serve a whole new category of offerings: Thai Noodle Bowls. Known as a quick, on-the-go meal in Thailand, Thai noodle bowls pack a lot of flavor and are great for a quick bite (or to relish alongside your friends in our beautiful new restaurant!).

From a kickstarter campaign:

Hey there! We’re Broodjes & Bier, a Dutch-inspired sandwich start-up working to make it in Washington, DC. Our dream is to build a brick-and-mortar location where you and yours can enjoy a fresh broodje (sandwich) and cold bier (beer), as if you were sitting canal side in Amsterdam.

So, what’s a ‘broodje’ anyway?

‘Broodje’ is dutch for sandwich. Our broodjes are focused on utilizing fresh, high quality produce, breads, and, particularly, dutch cheeses. Where others use lettuce, we use arugula. Where some concede to Muenster, we opt for 18-month aged Goudas. We keep whole legs of prosciutto at the ready, and are intimately aware of how many freshly baked ciabatta rolls we can stack in our Timbuk2s.

Up to this point, we’ve made and tasted at least 15 delicious and broodje-ful sandwiches. While we have a menu we’re confident will dominate a brick and mortar location, that’s a big leap for a group of youngins’ like ourselves. So, to enter the space in a more responsible fashion, we’re working on a few projects.

We’re putting together a pop-up dinner series where we can serve our food in a sit down fashion as well as, BROODJE CO., a prepackaged sandwich concept for Capitol Hill.

And Broodje Co. is why you’re here!

We’ve already worked out an agreement with The Silver Spork, a local cafe, bakery, and neighborhood staple in Capitol Hill. With your support, we’ll be able to buy the ingredients, packaging, and licensing we need to launch Broodje Co.

How? Our sandwiches will be made fresh, on-site, using locally baked breads and fresh produce. Our cheeses will be the finest the Dutch have to offer. We need your support to make this happen. Broodje Co. is the beginning of the Broodjes & Bier dream and we’d love for you to be part of it.

Dutch inspired, Capitol Hill made!

From an email:

I’m reaching out today about Tuesday’s National Pancake Day. All day at area IHOPs diners will receive a free short stack of pancakes. In lieu of payment, guests have the opportunity to make a donation to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Free pancakes – help cancer patients. It’s a win-win really. I’m hoping you’ll let PoPville know about the promotion. Last year in the DC Metro Area National Pancake Day raised $185,000 for LLS, and this year the 72 local stores have set a goal of $220,000.

IHOP is located on the 1400 block of Irving St, NW in DC USA

A few weeks ago we learned that Arcuri Restaurant would be replacing Kavanagh’s Pizza Pub in Glover Park. They’ve just issued a press release with a bit more info:

We are 4 partners, LLC, is proud to announce; restaurant Arcuri will open in Glover Park on the ground level of 2400 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington DC 20007. Our lease begins on February 1st with an expected opening in April. Arcuri will be a casual, vibrant neighborhood joint serving up American-Italian fare in the heart of Washington, DC’s Glover Park.

The menu will feature a variety of handcrafted wood fired brick oven pizzas, antipasti, pasta and seasonal dishes that use farm fresh and local quality ingredients. Options for vegetarians, vegans and kids will be available, along with some gluten free options. We will combine the menu with a casual, energetic, rustic city feel. Welcoming service, local flavors and good times will abound at Arcuri.

Our partnership consists of four local guys, all with extensive local restaurant experience. Adam Hiltebeitel was born at Sibley Hospital and lived in Glover Park as a toddler. He has worked at local restaurants like The Zebra Room and Faccia Luna. Bryce Gerlach, “Mr. Arcuri”, grew up in Arlington working in restaurants like The Boulevard Woodgrill and Overwood. Chef Richard Jones was raised in Arlington and is a Culinary Institute of America graduate. Following culinary school he has worked at 2941, Peche and most recently in NYC at Locanda Verde. Joe Chapman, originally from Michigan has been a managing force in the DC area for years. He has worked at Austin Grill, Faccia Luna and Overwood.

The Arcuri name is the namesake of owner, Bryce Gerlach’s great grandfather. Rosario Antonio Arcuri was born in Nicastro Italy on January 19, 1895. His passage to America was paid for with the promise of housing and good wages. After several voyages back to Italy and years of hard work, he gathered up his family and made the move to America. Working hard and living the American dream, Rosario raised his family and established his name, Arcuri.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

Big news from the Tony Kornheiser radio show this morning. They say The Third Edition is closing after tonight in Georgetown at 1218 Wisconsin Ave, NW. Third Edition’s website says:

Since opening its doors in 1969, The Third Edition has been serving Washington, DC locals, tourists and students in the heart of Georgetown for over 34 years. It has become a staple for this historic neighborhood by providing the perfect stop for a quick bite while shopping on weekends to a favorite visiting spot among visiting celebrities and Washington, DC VIPs.

To this day The Third Edition has maintained its original focus on serving seasonal, American comfort food in its signature casual setting. The classic atmosphere with its dark wood paneling, brass rails and green and gold facade is a comforting and familiar sight.

Not only was its main bar feature in the filming of St. Elmo’s Fire, The Third Edition is the perfect accent to Georgetown’s historic charm. You can expect consistent service and quality cuisine upon every visit.

They speculated that the space would become a Mexican restaurant. Guest of Guest reported earlier this month:

“The multi-level bar is currently in talks with Richard Sandoval Restaurants, the Mexican dining powerhouse behind dozens of restaurants across the country, including El Centro and Masa 14 in DC.”

Stay tuned.
