Update: The gofundme language now says (original language below):

“After spending the evening with friends, Corporal Michael Schroeder, was found with wounds that are consistent with being attacked from behind and kicked. Cash was most likely taken, though his wallet and phone were untouched, but at this time it is unconfirmed. The details lead us to believe that he was knocked unconscious and dragged in between two parked cars and left to die in temperatures below freezing.”

A local Glover Park businessman passes a message on from the ANC rep for the area:

“Hello all,

When I saw this story posted on the Glover Park Listserve yesterday, I immediately checked with the Commander for MPD’s 2nd District because I too was surprised to have not heard about this assault. The answer I received from Commander Melvin Gresham is that the incident was being treated as an accident and not an assault. In other words, the police believe the marine fell and hit his head after a night out.

I am in no position to know whether the police are correct or if the marine’s family is correct in their belief that he was assaulted. But as people look at this story and draw their own conclusions and decide how to act, please know that there are apparently two sides to this story.

Cheers,

Brian Turmail
Commissioner, ANC 3B-05 and
Chairman, Citizens Advisory Council for MPD’s 2nd District”

“Dear PoPville,

This attack Friday the 12th in Glover Park [ed. note: the gofundme says Feb. 11th so maybe it was after midnight?] received, from what I can find, zero press coverage. I am a former classmate of this man’s brother, and was hoping you might post a link to the gofundme campaign to help mitigate some expenses.” (more…)

Free parking - DC 2016 Visitors Parking Pass (any zone)

“Dear PoPville,

A resident pointed out to our ANC (Mount Pleasant) that there’s an ad on Craigslist offering “Free parking — DC 2016 Visitors Parking Pass (any zone) — $60”. The Visitor Parking Passes are very popular among residents, allowing them to have guests, or contractors, without having to worry about RPP parking tickets. But from the beginning, there’s been concern that the VPPs would be abused, sold to commuters with jobs in neighborhood businesses. Should that abuse be widespread, the VPP program could well be cancelled.

The law is clear: “DCMR 18, 2414.18: The forgery, counterfeiting, sale, exchange for value, or unauthorized use or replication of an annual visitor parking pass shall be punishable by a fine of three hundred dollars ($300).” That means that both the seller of a VPP (including a legitimately obtained pass), and the user (a commuter, not a visitor to the owner of the VPP), are subject to $300 fines. The serial numbers on the VPPs make it easy to connect an improperly used VPP to its resident owner.

Is this a substantial problem in this area? If so, then measures will have to be taken to stop abuse, and preserve the VPP program for residents who use it properly.

“Dear PoPville,

I parked my car on 14th Street in front of the Whitman Walker Clinic (Between Riggs and R Street) yesterday. Between 1:50 and 2pm, while I was moving things from my car, two bags were taken out of my car – one bag was found with most of the belongings strewn about an alley a half block away, obviously all valuables taken, and the other was missing entirely. In that bag was my best friend’s jewelry, mostly of no value other than sentiment. It’s turquoise jewelry that her grandfather made for her mom and grandmother that was passed down to her.

I am certain I locked the car, but there is no sign of forced entry. So maybe I didn’t – and that’s my fault. I’m not sure.

I’m asking for anyone who has any information to please contact me ([email protected]) or if anyone sees unique native american jewelry show up at consignment or pawn shops to please let me know.

If anyone finds a black duffle bag with clothes somewhere in the vicinity of where my car was, that would still be of some consolation to my friend to have those back.

I’m willing to pay anything to get her jewelry back – I’m heart broken, my friend is devastated. It’s not worth much, but the value of sentiment is priceless.”

On Feb. 10th a reported “a gross, slightly scary experience around 9am on my walk to work. Walking on the north side of M St. NE between 5th and 6th”. Yesterday two more folks believe they ran into him:

“Earlier this morning around 9:20am I was walking towards the Noma Metro on M Street and 5th Street when I ran into I believe the same man. He was wearing a black ski mask and black jacket and had his private parts exposed. He seemed a bit odd as I approached to pass him on the side walk until I realized what he was doing. I immediately called the cops and informed them because I knew this has happened before and thought it was the same guy from when this happened on 2/10/16. Hopefully they can get him the help he needs!”

and

“We live near the corner of 6th and M ST NE and have reported him twice this week, once on Tuesday and once today. I called 911 about 4 times giving them updates on his location but DC police kept missing him. Both days he was pacing back and forth down M ST NE from the corner of 5th to Florida Ave. He was seen today moving from one side of M ST NE to the other based on the foot traffic that was coming. It appears he was targeting women. Both days we have seen him he has been out during the high traffic time from 830-930 or so. Hopefully they get this guy soon.”
