“Dear PoPville,

Thank you to a stranger. On Saturday, 13 February at roughly 1:15 pm, I was walking from my place in Ledroit Park to the grocery store. I was at 3rd and Elm NW when I heard a verbal altercation about 15 feet behind me. I briefly turned around to gauge the situation, saw two men arguing, and then continued walking. The voices escalated so I looked behind me once more and saw one of the men pull a gun and fire it at the other man. They then both scattered.

During this somewhat scary 30 seconds, a man roughly two blocks away was helpfully shouting instructions at me (believe me, it’s much more difficult to react when you are in this situation, even if you “know” what to do…). The man then came and kept me company until the cops came. He then offered to walk me home or to the place of my choosing. With all of the confusion and adrenaline, I failed to get his name. So, in the off chance you read this, I just want to send a big thank you for taking 20 minutes out of your day to keep me company and talk me down a bit during a stressful time. Thanks for helping DC feel even more like a community and a home.

Thanks to a few readers for sending – WJLA reports:

“A decorated war veteran is recovering after a brutal attack Friday night. He says it happened at a McDonald’s on 911 E St., N.W., D.C.”

The Daily Caller previously reported:

Christopher Marquez, a veteran of Iraq and recipient of the Bronze Star for valor, said he was dining at a McDonald’s in northwest D.C. when a group of black teenagers came up to him and allegedly began harassing him about the black lives matter movement. Marquez ignored them which prompted calls and shouts that he was a racist.

Marquez left the establishment after eating, but allegedly sustained a sudden blow to the back of his head outside the McDonald’s, which knocked him unconscious. When he woke up, his pants were ripped and wallet gone, which contained $400 in cash, three credit cards, his VA medical card, school identification, metro card and driver’s license.

“Brian was attacked by a gang in Washington DC as he was getting off a bus one block from his home with his bicycle. They beat him and kicked him to the ground and kept kicking him in the head until he was unconscious. They also stole his bike. The bus driver called an ambulance. He woke up in the hospital. He has a concussion, a broken nose, a sub galeal hematoma, and broken vertebrae in his lumbar spine in addition to cuts and abrasions. He is so lucky to still be alive. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Went to the Columbia Heights CVS at 14th and Irving this morning to get passport photos taken, only to find out from the manager that someone broke in and stole their passport camera. No worries, FedEx Office a couple doors down does them, too.

But who steals a crappy CVS passport camera anyway? Only in Columbia Heights.”
