“Assault on 2nd and Todd Pl NE

I’m writing to let the PoPville community know of an assault that happened to me at approximately 6:45am this morning [Thursday] as I was getting into my car to head to work. A man was sitting on the sidewalk near my car mumbling incoherently. While unlocking my car door he approached me from behind and threw a rock at me, striking my elbow. He ran away quickly while I jumped into my car. Luckily the rock missed my head and I only have a swollen arm to deal with. He did not try to snatch my purse.

I filed a police report and they are on the hunt for him during their normal patrol of the neighborhood. He is a black male, approx 5’6″, 140 lbs, age 30-35. He was wearing a white t-shirt and dark pants. He ran down 2nd St NE towards McKinley Tech High School. I believe he probably ducked into the alley parallel to T St. or T St.

Stay safe!”

From MPD:

“This evening [Thursday] at approximately 6:30 pm in the unit block of Florida Avenue NW, three subjects occupying a gold Ford Explorer accosted several citizens at gunpoint as they exited an establishment in the block. The victims were robbed of their personal possessions, and the suspects fled the scene in the vehicle.

Moments later the Office of Unified Communications dispatcher broadcast the radio run for the robbery, including a look-out for the suspect vehicle.

Fifth District officers immediately flooded the area while canvassing for the victims and suspects. Within moments, one of the officers spotted the suspect vehicle and began coordination with other officers in the area to conduct a felony vehicle stop. While doing so, the suspects became aware of the increasing MPD presence, and the suspects fled in the vehicle to an alley in the 200 block of Morgan St NW. The suspects bailed out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Despite two of the suspects being armed with guns, the officers selflessly gave chase on foot. All three suspects were apprehended without injury to the officers or the suspects. (more…)

Thanks to a reader for passing on from the Camden apartment building management [60 L Street, NE]:

“We wanted to make you aware of an incident which occurred last night. At approximately 10:30 PM, there was an attempted robbery of a resident and their guest on L Street. According to the police report, three suspects with the estimated age of 13-14 years old pepper sprayed a female on L Street in between our building and the Mathematica building and attempted to steal her purse. The suspects fled without the purse and fortunately, the resident and guest were not injured beyond the pepper spray.

We have the footage of the suspects on camera and have provided this to the police to aid in their investigation. If you have any information, we encourage you to contact the Washington DC Police Department at 202-727-9099.”

“Dear PoPville,

I recently found a bunch of ID cards, credit cards, and metro cards scattered on the ground on Georgia Ave between Park and Morton. I assume the poor girl was robbed and wanted to try to get her stuff back to her. As I write this, it’s about 100 degrees out and I’m trying to avoid going outside. I googled the 4th district station number and, strangely, the 3rd district came up first. I got a rude woman who spoke like I was bothering her and told me to bring the stuff down to V street. It’s about a 20 minute walk from my place one way to 4th district station and, as I mentioned, it’s disgustingly hot. That said, I was going to make time in my day to do it, but it was going to happen later in the day.

I dug deeper and got the number for the 4th. They had officers stop by less than 10 minutes later where they took my name, number, and DOB and took down the details of where, when, and how I found the cards. The officers were polite, helpful, and genuinely seemed to want to help the girl out. I appreciate their courtesy and quickness.”

“Dear PoPville,

I was attacked by 2 teenagers Monday night in Shaw – both had on backpacks. They were both black and wearing black t shirts. One had grey shorts on and the other had sagging khaki pants. Happened on 13th between T and U.

By the time I could call the police, they’d run off. It took me a second to register what happened. Attack was highly unprovoked- I was looking down at my phone and walking to the gym. Literally hit me out of nowhere. The guy who threw the punch said “what you gonna do about it, white b*tch ass f*ggot?” (I guess he could tell by my demeanor and the neighborhood that I’m gay).

Filed a report today with the MPD’s LGBT unit.

Wanted to let you know so others in the area are aware.

Forgot to mention the cop said it could’ve been something called “the knockout game.” Apparently it’s a new trend/game among teenagers in urban areas to try and knock an unsuspecting bystander unconscious with one sucker punch. I hadn’t heard of it until he mentioned it.”

Update on the dog, Cora, hit by a stray bullet in Brightwood Park at 6:30pm Monday:

“Though I may wish there were canine HIPAA laws protecting my privacy, I’m very grateful for all the well-wishes from the PoPville. I’m home, resting, and going to make a full recovery. They don’t call me #hardcora for nothing.

I’d also love to give a shout out to our incredible, capable, leg-saving dog sitter. She was the definition of cool under pressure.”

dog shot

“Dear PoPville,

There was a shooting in Brightwood around 6:30pm today [Monday] on 7th and Jefferson. I was about 20 feet away walking the dogs I’m dog sitting for. I am fine but unfortunately one of the dogs was hit in the leg. She is being a champ though and is currently being treated at the vet. It’s a shame because there has been a police presence on this particular corner every night. I guess that means shootings are happening during the day when more folks/bystanders are around? Just please be safe everyone.”

Update this morning:

“She’s staying at the vet for now but fortunately shouldn’t need surgery. And props to all the neighbors who came outside when I got back asking how she was doing!”
