“Dear PoPville,

Attached is a photo of a flier posted on 11th and Harvard. Any idea what it’s about? The website is a Google doc with some resources and contact information, but it doesn’t say why you shouldn’t call the police…”

Ed. Note: Presumably it’s at least in part a response to cases of police brutality as well as an attempt to counter the high incarceration rate in the US.

Steps to Ask Yourself

  1. Is this merely an inconvenience to me? > Can I put up with this and be okay?
  2. No, I need to respond > Can I handle this on my own, is this something I could try to talk-out with the person?
  3. No, I need back-up > Is there a friend, neighbor, or someone whom I could call to help me?
  4. No, I need a professional > Can we use mediation to talk through what’s happening or is there an emergency response hotline I could call?
  5. No >  If I call the police do I understand how involving the police could impact me and the other person? If police are present do you know what to do?

Well this pretty much sums up 2017.

From WMATA:

“Demarcus Joseph Graves, 50, was arrested by Transit Police yesterday evening on charges of felony malicious destruction of property, malicious burning, impeding Metro operations, fare evasion, and open warrants.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday, an individual, subsequently identified as Graves, was observed on Metro digital video systems entering Minnesota Avenue Station making no attempt to pay the fare. The subject walked upstairs to the train platform where he came upon a LimeBike (bike share bicycle) that had been left there by a Metro customer.

For unknown reasons, at 7:03 p.m., the subject is observed picking up the LimeBike and throwing it onto the inbound Metro tracks. The bike landed between the two rails and was struck by an arriving Orange Line about 90 seconds later. Passengers aboard the train were safely offloaded to the platform; there were no injuries.

The impact with the bicycle caused significant damage to the undercarriage of the train. Metro was forced to single track around the incident for more than four hours before the train could be moved. (more…)

We had a big discussion about this as it was happening on twitter last night. Here’s the official report from MPD:

“At approximately 9:30 pm this evening, officers from the Second District responded to the area of the 2800 block of Connecticut Avenue, NW for reports of gunfire. While canvassing the area, they located three juveniles. One of the juveniles was in possession of a handgun and was placed under arrest. There were no injuries related to this incident.”

Update from MPD:

“I wanted to take the time to both acknowledge the excellent work of our 2D officers and to dispel the rumors of a shooting last week. As indicated in the post below, officers responded to the sounds of gunshots in the 2800 Block of Connecticut Avenue on Friday night. There was no shooting and the ” gun ” that was recovered was found to be a starter pistol that fired blanks. Although this starter pistol is most commonly associated with track meets, any use outside of an authorized event is strictly prohibited.

Sincerely,

Melvin E. Gresham
Commander
Second District”
