“Dear PoPville,

I fairly recently had the super-shitty experience of being a random victim of shots fired in DC — for me, it was having a bullet come through my (glass) back door, shattered the door, ricochet around my dining room, and land 2-3 feet from my dog’s bed. I don’t know how to put into words how terrifying it was to come home from work to find a bullet in my dining room. I shouldn’t have to. And I shouldn’t have to lie awake at night playing out the alternate scenarios for that bullet in my house. (more…)

“Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced that Turning Natural, Inc.–a local chain of juice bars–will pay more than $10,000 in unpaid wages to 22 employees as part of a settlement in a wage theft case with the Office of the Attorney General (OAG). The case, announced last July, alleged that Turning Natural failed to pay employees minimum wage and overtime, and failed to provide sick leave, as required by District law. Per the settlement, the company will return an average of $484 to each worker, and offer retroactive sick leave to seven current employees. Turning Natural will also pay $5,000 in civil penalties to the District. (more…)

Around 3:15pm Alert DC Traffic Police reported: “Traffic Alert
700 b/o Irving St NW btw Sherman Ave and Georgia Ave NW [EB One-Way] due to Police Activity
Alternative Route[s]: Park Rd, Harvard St, Lamont St
Watch for MPD direction // Closures are subject to change”

Some are hearing this was a shooting but that has not been confirmed at the moment. Update when more is known.

“DC Council and Violent Crime

Over the weekend, The Washington Post published an article about legislation under review by the DC Council that enables individuals convicted of rape and murder to be released early from prison. Instead of helping rapists, DC Councilmembers should be asking why the Department of Justice isn’t prosecuting rapes occurring in Washington, DC; why millions of DC tax dollars are being spent on sexual harassment settlements; and why DC agency employees who commit sexual harassment are still employed.

Currently, DC law enables judges to reduce prison sentences for crimes committed by individuals under the age of 18. There are no disqualifying crimes. The law simply states that the individual must served 20 years in prison.

Until recently, judges reviewing petitions for early release were required to consider the nature of the crimes committed. The DC Council removed that requirement from the law in January 2019.

Now, the DC Council wants to expand the early release policy to individuals who committed crimes under the age of 25. And again, there is no limitation on crimes. An individual can commit rape and receive early release if that individual was under the age of 25 when the crime occured. (more…)

“On 8/7/2019, at approximately 4:15 AM, members of the Fifth District responded to the area of the 3600 block of Hansberry Court, NE, for multiple calls for the sounds of gunshots. The response included multiple Fifth District Units, Canine Officers and a helicopter. Members were able to locate several items of evidence, but did not locate any victims. Unfortunately, we do not have any further information at this time.

Thank you to all of the citizens and neighbors who called 911 and pointed us in the right direction. We appreciate your help!”

“Saturday afternoon I was violently assaulted, beaten unconscious, and robbed in NE DC. Several people came to my aid after the incident, and I was rushed to Howard University Hospital, where I received excellent care. I am posting this is a general notice to friends and family, as I am currently without a phone or laptop (or ID or bank cards), as I have been for more than 48 hours.

The attack occurred while I was taking a few moments to enjoy some peace and quiet on the wooden pedestrian bridge that connects Kingman and Heritage Islands to the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail and the new “The Fields” complex of sport and recreation facilities adjacent to RFK stadium. I had stopped on the bridge to observe a crane in the water and to reflect for a few moments before heading off for some errands during the remainder of Saturday afternoon.

The perpetrator came up from behind me and knocked me down with a hard sucker punch to the side of my face, and he then jumped on top of me and continued his ruthless assault on my face and body. I honestly don’t remember much after that because I was beaten unconscious. (more…)

Two Men Shot in Trinidad about 6:15 this morning

“On today’s date at approximately 0614 hours two men were shot while standing in front of 1657 11th Place Northeast. Both men were shot in the leg, C-1 was shot twice and C-2 was once. The men were conscious and transported to local hospitals were they will be treated for their injuries. The suspect’s description has been reported as two black males, operating a grey, 4 door vehicle. The suspects were last seen driving south on West Virginia Avenue.”

“Dear PoPville,

I am reaching out because a friend had her dogs stolen over the weekend during a domestic violence incident. The dogs were taken from the home and according to the police were dumped “somewhere” in NW DC. We hope the public can help locate the pit bulls before something terrible can happen. The dogs are a couple, and the female had puppies a few weeks ago, and they still need their momma. (more…)
