Local Beer News – 3 Stars create house beer for Daikaya and DC Brau win Two Gold Medals at the US Open Beer Championship

Local craftsmen combine talents to brew unique craftbeer, the Sansho Panza!

What happens when you take one of the brightest stars in the DC culinary scene and pair him up with DC’s cutting edge craft brewery? You end up with the very unique opportunity to discover a new interpretation of some classic Japanese ingredients reimagined as a delightful seasonal saison. Executive Chef Katsuya Fukushima is the man behind the amazing Daikaya, with partners Yama Jewayni and Daisuke Utagawa, and when he decided to pursue a brew to match his unique creations, he simply looked for the local standout crafting their own innovations and cutting edge beers. Brewed to be the perfect sidekick to the seasonal offerings at Daikaya, The Sansho Panza, is brewed with fresh yuzu and sansho pepper, both of which lend a nice bright citrus character to the light earthy saison.

The Sansho Panza will be priced at $9 per beer debuting at Daikaya on July 10th, in the Izakaya at 705 6th St. NW in Chinatown, and will be celebrated alongside other craft offerings from the brewery, as well as some special menu items to enhance the release. This will be an ongoing collaboration between Daikaya and 3 Stars where they will continue to use seasonally appropriate ingredients to create new house selections for both the Ramen Shop and the upstairs Izakaya.”

Denizens Brewing Company “opening in a couple of weeks” in Silver Spring – in the interim have a Taste at Republic in Takoma

“Dear PoPville,

Silver Spring’s first brewery is snapping up quite nicely! I walked by Denizen’s space this evening and took a few pictures. One if the owners (I think) came out and said hello as we walked by and told us they would open in a couple of weeks and that the BBQ bus food truck will also be opening inside the brewery. As a residents of silver spring, I am very excited about this development and wanted to share!”

Denizens website says:

“Denizens Brewing Co. is a craft brewery serving European-style lagers, American-style ales, Belgian-inspired beers, sour beers, and barrel-aged beers to both the craft beer aficionado and those new to high quality brews. We are located steps from the Metro in downtown Silver Spring and are opening in Summer 2014.”

“First brew is in the books! Named for our home in South Silver Spring, the Southside Rye IPA is here for good.

Thirsty to try Denizens’ beer? Our Southside Rye IPA is on draft at Republic [Takoma Park]. Come and grab a pint!”

CityPaper reports the beer:

“is brewed with a small portion of rye malt and five American hops—Nugget, Cascade, Chinook, Azacca, and Amarillo. Bar manager Brett Robison describes the 7.2 percent alcohol beer as a well-balanced West coast-style IPA with a noticeable but not overwhelming rye character.”

“Just wanted to invite you to a Tap Takeover event we are hosting with Finch’s Beer Company of Chicago, Illinois on Tuesday, June 3rd.

Beginning at 5pm, we’ll be featuring six craft brews from Finch’s:

Cutthroat Pale Ale
Wet Hot Hopped Wheat
Threadless IPA
Fascist Pig Imperial Red
Secret Stache Stout

Craft Beer Store, 1412 Hops & Vine, Coming to Hill East

Thanks to a reader for sending word:

“This new (maybe 2 weeks old) sign for ‘Craft Beer’ has me intrigued, though I may be getting ahead of myself as I can’t find any information on what this might be. New signage appeared at 1412 Pennsylvania SE, the old location of Indigo Frenzy which closed a few months ago, but I see no permits in the windows & cant find anything online. Any ideas? In a peek through the window there do seem to be stacks of boxes of 750mL bottles.”

Anyone know if it’s a bar or store? I’m getting some google hits for a sports bar called Shooter’s but can’t see any details. 1412 Pennsylvania Ave, SE is located right near the Potomac Ave metro stop a few storefronts down from Trusty’s and Wisdom.

Dacha Beer Garden Coming to Mt. Vernon Square Applying for 150 Seat Summer Garden and Live Entertainment

Some details about the second planned Dacha Beer Garden coming to Mt. Vernon Square from a liquor license application:

“New Tavern, The establishment will offer a choice of draft beers and light fare. 
Food will be pre-cooked offsite and reheated on site. It will be outfitted with a 20’-foot x 8’-foot pre-fabricated building that will be connected to public sewer and water supply and will have the following functions; 1. To provide service counter space, 2. Store and refrigerate beer kegs, 3. Reheat remotely prepared light fare on a gridle, 4. Wash beer glasses in a code compliant three compartment sink, 5. Wash glasses in an automatic glass washer, Store a supply of bottled water in an under counter refrigerator.

Total Occupancy load #35. Summer Garden-Seats #150. With Live Entertainment”

Hours of operation are listed as Sunday through Saturday: 8am-2am. Though live entertainment in the summer garden (occurring or continuing after 6pm) is listed as Sunday through Saturday: 8am–8pm.

Vintage Game Night Featuring Beltway Brewing Company at Woodrow Wilson House

“This month’s version of Vintage Game Night at the President Woodrow Wilson House will feature Beltway Brewing Company of Virginia. The Sterling, VA brewery serves as a host for partner and contract brewing, professionally producing high quality craft beer for those who cannot build or expand their own breweries. Vintage Game Night will feature their house brand IPA and Amber Ale at the bar.

Vintage Game Night is a monthly happy hour at the President Woodrow Wilson House, featuring games from the 1920s, 30s and 40s.  Every first Wednesday from 5:30 to 8:00pm, the Dupont area museum partners with a local craft brewery for a vintage gaming happy hour.  Kick back with a local brew where Wilson would have lounged, play games the Wilson family would have played and enjoy a unique game night experience unlike anything else in DC.

Sauf Haus Bier Garten Taking Shape in Dupont – Will be Huge

When we learned the Sauf Haus Bier Hall + Garten was opening above the Dupont Shake Shack this summer I didn’t realize how big the garten part would be. Though we knew it would have a summer garden with 210 seats I had a tough time conceptualizing that space. But walking by it yesterday you can see how huge it’ll be – this has the potential to be very very awesome:
