Black whiskey Logan
1410 14th Street, NW

Back in Dec. we learned that Black Whiskey would be opening in former Mar de Plata space in Logan Circle. At that time they hoped to open around the April. Looks like they still have some more buildout to do but according to the liquor license application, the space will be pretty large:

“New Full Service Restaurant serving American cuisine with occasional DJ and Dancing. Number of inside seats is 140. Total occupancy load is 275. Summer Garden, number of seats is 20.

This is a curious development – a new liquor license application has been posted outside 1423 H Street, NE – it says:

The Elroy (This is a transfer from 645 New York Avenue, NW. New York Avenue Beach Bar)

New Tavern. Beach themed Outdoors. Entertainment to be provided by DJ. No Nude Performances. Licensed Food Trucks will provide sale of food on premises; food prepared off-site and warmed on-premises. Total Load is 100; Total Number of seats is 40.

Obviously this is a storefront so they won’t be able to replicate the New York Ave Beach Bar here. So it sounds like a new bar called The Elroy will be using their liquor license. Looks like a lot of work is needed on the space so updates as construction progresses.

A couple weeks ago we saw the location of Derek’s Brown Mockingbird Hill – 1843 7th Street, NW. Now comes even more news for the construction on the 1800 block of 7th St, NW. Right next door to Mockingbird Hill will be a new oyster bar called Eat The Rich. A liquor license posted out front says:

“Bar focusing on Farm Raised Chesapeake Oysters, local beer, and mixed drinks. Seating Capacity is 67, with a total Occupancy Load of 67.”

I’m not really a big fan of the name but a “Bar focusing on Farm Raised Chesapeake Oysters, local beer, and mixed drinks” sounds awesome. Stay tuned.

Thanks to the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) for sending a list of bars that applied for licenses and “were approved for extended hours over the Daylight Saving period this weekend.” Which is to say, they won’t have to close an hour early when the clocks are pushed forward.

UPDATE: Thanks to kg_ography for mapping them:

Back in 2011 we learned a restaurant was coming to the former Metrolab building that had been completed gutted at 913 U Street, NW. After little visible progress the past year a new for lease sign has gone up out front.

And while we’re on the block – a reader sends a heads up about some recent thefts at Velvet Lounge:

Two saturdays ago I was at Velvet Lounge. I had my purse on me the entire time, but had my jacket, with my keys in the pocket, hanging on one of the pegs on the wall. When I got home, no keys. At first I thought they might’ve fallen out but now I believe otherwise. Friday night, at Velvet Lounge, a group piled their stuff together on some chairs, including my friend’s purse (not the smartest, I know). Her wallet was taken out of her purse, $400 in credit card charges were incurred before she found out and canceled everything (obviously a short time span). That SAME NIGHT, another friend’s iphone was taken from her jacket at Velvet. I now think someone took the keys hoping a car key was on there.

Either a regular is there multiple nights a week stealing things or someone working there? I don’t know. But people should be aware.

Last month another reader sent word Purse Nabbings at Bars.

Back in April 2012 we learned that Showtime Lounge would be coming to 113 Rhode Island Ave, NW across the street from Boundary Stone. I hadn’t noticed much movement but when I was walking around this weekend I noticed the front door was open. I peeked inside and spoke with one of the owners who says they hope to open around the end of the month. Plans are still for:

“The establishment plans to operate as a coffeehouse during the daytime hours, serving coffee, pastries and house made dips and snacks. During the evening hours, offering a small selection of beer, wine, spirits and finger foods.”

Finishing touches were still ongoing but there is a nice little bar in the back, some sweet retro wallpaper in the front and a mural on a back/side wall. It looks like it’s gonna be another great addition to Bloomingdale. Stay tuned for an exact opening date when it’s announced.

From a press release:

1905 Bistro & Bar is excited to team up with DC Brau on two beer events at the restaurant on Thursday, March 7th – a rooftop beer launch featuring the brewery’s newest release, Saint Joseph’s Tripel, followed by 1905’s first-ever beer dinner in the main dining room.

The beer launch is open to the public from 5 to 7 PM with no cover. Reservations are not required. The Saint Joseph’s Tripel is a limited-release Belgian-style ale, which clocks in at 10% ABV and is brewed with orange peel, coriander, grains of paradise, and juniper berries. According to the brewery, an angel has “blessed this transcendent ale with deep flavors of passion fruit, kiwi, and tropical candy.” DC Brau beers poured during the beer launch will cost $5. All pours from the first keg of Saint Joseph’s Tripel that night will be $5 cash and will benefit the family of Joey Belcher.

The 1905 dining room will be reservation-only for the evening, as Chef Joel Hatton pairs four courses, plus an amuse bouche, with selections from DC Brau’s portfolio, including the Saint Joseph’s Tripel and the limited edition Catoctin Creek Grape Brandy Barrel Aged Ghoul’s Night Out. The beer dinner is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM. The full dinner menu, which is subject to change, (after the jump.) (more…)

UPDATE: From a new press release:

Dupont Circle upscale gastropub The Gryphon will open its doors to the public on Wednesday, March 13 for both bar and dinner service, starting at 8 p.m. Due to construction delays, the new sports lounge will push back their opening date to accommodate hungry Washingtonians in time for March Madness.

A lot more info on the Gryphon coming to the former Heritage India space in Dupont. While there will be a preview March 2nd for the DC Leprechaun Lap the Gryphon’s normal hours will start sometime “mid-March”. I’ll update when an exact date is known. From a press release:

On March 2nd, Dupont Circle welcomes The Gryphon, the marriage of a gastropub and an upscale sports bar. The 5,000 square-foot eatery boasts the social dining atmosphere of a restaurant, the heart of a pub and the view of a stadium. Executive Chef Joseph Evans of brother restaurant Lost Society has crafted a hearty, refined menu that modernizes the classic bar bite. Gaming accents and vintage decor evoke the grand, private lounges of the 1920s and 30s, while contemporary touches such as an interactive, state-of-the-art integrated media system will ensure that guests catch every play from any spot in the house – no bleacher seats here. The restaurant will open to Washingtonians as part of the DC Leprechaun Lap, a massive bar crawl featuring over 20 Dupont establishments.

The Gryphon is where Washingtonians will go to indulge their competitive side and unwind in style. The eatery will feature two bars, 192 seats and standing capacity for 350. Sporting events – from mainstream to middle-of-nowhere – will screen for guests on 31 televisions located throughout the establishment. The DJ booth, located behind the back bar, is housed in what was previously the vault of the historic Hamilton National Bank – a prior tenant of the space.
