202 M Street, SE

The eagerly anticipated Park Tavern has finally opened at 202 M Street, SE in Navy Yard. Thanks to all who sent emails. Park Tavern joins the recently opened Gordon Biersch brewery near the baseball stadium.

Anyone happen to stop by Park Tavern yesterday?

Ed. Note: This is one of Xavier Cervera’s restaurants that recently sold to a Boston equity firm. Capitol Hill Corner reported:

The equity group that bought out Cervera is reportedly headed by his brother and has other restaurant franchises. Xavier’s brother is currently in Washington and is actively managing the restaurant group. Part of the deal was Xavier’s continued involvement in the management as a consultant.

Dear PoPville,

I was on H street this afternoon and noticed that Little Miss Whiskey’s had some work done recently. It is a noticeable upgrade to the previously understated exterior. Notably, they installed purple neon light trimming on the roof of the building, a large fleur-de-lis on the top of the building, a new custom silver door, and painted the whole building shades of purple. It looks great in my estimation!

Nice! I think it looks great too. What do you guys think – thumbs up or down?

This edition of Eating Around Town was written by Abbey Becker. Abbey previously wrote about Stachowski’s Market and she lives near Eastern Market.

Boundary Stone Public House (116 Rhode Island Avenue NW) is everything I imagine a neighborhood bar should be. Living on Capitol Hill, we’ve got Tune Inn, but then you’re mostly relegated to ordering a burger or something fried. Tunicliff’s fills the “local bar” slot perfectly–I’ve seen people of all ages, cops, and firefighters there at all hours of the day–but the food isn’t anything to write home about.

If you’re going on a weekend night, good luck getting a spot to sit. It’s great that it’s doing so well, but if you plan to eat, be ready to hover (at a distance, of course) and slip into a seat just as the last person gets up. Those that aren’t inclined to wait long may want to try brunch on the weekend or a weekday dinner. Even if you can’t sit right away, you can sip a beer or whiskey near the bar until something frees up.

Speaking of drinking, you can do it well at Boundary Stone. The whiskey, bourbon, rye, and scotch lists seem pretty extensive. (I’m a gin drinker, so I’m just making an assumption based on what others have told me.) There are always a couple of local beers on tap, and there’s a good selection of cans. If you’re there for weekend brunch, they’ve got $12 bottomless Bloody Marys or mimosas, and when I went last weekend, the bartender was quick about refilling an empty glass.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

Ri Ra Irish Pub_georgetown
3125 M Street, NW

Last week Georgetown Patch reported that a Ri Ra Irish Pub would be coming to the former Mie N Yu space in Georgetown. From Ri Ra’s Arlington website:

Capturing the unique atmosphere of traditional Victorian era Irish pubs, Rí Rá was built entirely from authentic Irish salvage material. The main bar, the back bar and many of the features came from an old pharmacy in Dublin and are over 100 years old. The pub was meticulously restored in Ireland before being shipped to Clarendon.

The interior is rich and warm, constructed by notable craftsmen from the finest available materials of the day. The pub is an ideal use for the historic Virginia Hardware Store that previously occupied the site since 1924.

No doubt the many hard working carpenters that shopped at the Hardware Store over the years would appreciate the craftsmanship of the beautiful Irish pub.

Alongside the old and historic artifacts that the pub contains are pre-Raphaelite paintings that were replicated by hand during the months of construction to create a truly amazing and unique setting.

You can see their menus here. Anyone ever been to a Ri Ra before?

Back in April ’12 Mig bar closed on the second floor of Rendezvous Lounge in Adams Morgan. An update on the space:

Strange Rumblings from Rendezvous Lounge (DC Tiki/ / /Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar)

DOWNSTAIRS: Out with Mr. Marley and in with Mr. Presley: it’s DC Tiki w/ Vlad, every Friday and Saturday night…18th Street’s only home for heavily-accessorized, lovingly-crafted sugar bombs served in bizarre vessels and accompanied by loud Rockabilly, Punk, Surf Rock, and whatever else infiltrates Vlad’s i-Tunes. There will be umbrellas. Little ones. And Saturday the 6th the joint goes Big Top with Jon “the Fireman” Schott at the helm. Jon breathes fire. Often. Also two bucks off the Tiki drinks till ten, as well as specials on Natty Boh and rail drinks. In short, good, cheap, if not flammable, fun…

UPSTAIRS: If you ever wanted to pretend you’re in an episode of Twin Peaks but you’re too lazy to learn how to talk backwards, this is your very own cozy corner of the universe: Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar, home of the “Snakeskin Jacket” (Fireball whiskey, Kubler Absinthe, ginger beer, OJ)….Loud New Wave, Britpop, Elsewhere Blues and Rock; regular screenings of Lynch flicks, B-Movies, Film Noir, MST3K; *tasty dance parties* on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, with a host of regular DJs and a fierce little sound system. Pick and choose from an arsenal of craft bubblys or submerge yourself in quantity swill. Or try a “Needle Trax” (Bluecoat gin, Kubler absinthe, orange bitters, soda)….Dress code goes something like the Warriors meets the Fifth Element. Open 7 days a week at 6pm. Come play, friends…

Dear PoPville,

I wanted to send you a note about Beuchert’s Saloon — I went here for drinks last night and had a fantastic time! I wanted to tell you about them, and see if other people had checked them out. They’ve been open for a little over two weeks, and the staff are some of the most genuine people I’ve encountered in the service industry. Apparently, I’m told by a Capitol Hill local that this stretch of Pennsylvania Ave they’re on isn’t an easy one to draw in the crowd, but they were already packed on a Wednesday night. Outta this world cocktails, great marble bar, and two enormous bison heads mounted on the wall.

We previewed Buchert’s, located at 623 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, back in early Feb. You can see their menu here. Anyone else check them out yet?

Adrian is a dog owner who lives in Shaw.

Attention dog owners and dog lovers – spring is here. On a few occasions, the weather has already warmed up enough to do some outdoor dining and imbibing. That was the case last weekend, so naturally I was excited to have my dog (@DogNamedBatman) accompany my friends and I for an afternoon at Standard only to learn that dogs have to stay outside the fence. Some may prefer the dog-free atmosphere, but there are a lot of dog owners in the city who probably don’t mind dogs hanging out at the bar with them.

I did some research, including collecting feedback from dog listserves and dog owners to start this list. I will note that I was not able to personally confirm all of these details, and some of the information may be outdated. So if you know of any spots that have not been listed here please add them to the comments.
