“Paying homage to one of the most iconic bartending films – “Cocktail” – The Royal in LeDroit Park is flashing back to the 1980s for the latest installment of its monthly “Royal Knights” spirits exploration series, complete with the decade’s most infamous drinks – sans Tom Cruise but with plenty of flair. On Monday, December 12, guest bartenders Will Alvarez and Jake Kenny of renowned cocktail bar Columbia Room, along with The Royal’s former beverage director Horus Alvarez, who is returning to DC for just one night, will shake up their own spins on charmingly tacky film-inspired drinks of the 80s from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

“Cocktail” has inspired a generation of professional bartenders for the last 30 years. And “Royal Knights” will resurrect this bygone era, as Will Alvarez, Jake Kenny and Horus Alvarez take guests back in time to the age of flair bartending. The menu features eight cocktails (all $8), inspired by everything from the first drink Cruise is asked to make (the Cuba Libre), Cruise’s go-to hangover cure (the Red Eye), Tiki culture, and of course, many of the decade’s infamous cocktails such as the Sex On The Beach, Long Island Iced Tea, Appletini and Midori Sour.

Hill Prince coming to H Street NE this January “All drinks on the menu will be $10 or less”

“Cousins and fourth generation Washingtonians Nick and David Wiseman will open Hill Prince, a neighborhood bar, early this winter in the Atlas District, located at 1337 H Street NE, between the iconic Atlas Theatre and Rock and Roll Hotel.

Hill Prince will feature a list of classic cocktails, beers and wines, plus a selection of small bites. All drinks on the menu will be $10 or less. Longtime DGS barman Tony Lawson, also a lifelong Washingtonian, will helm the bar as General Manager and Beverage Director. The focus will be on quality ingredients and classic preparations, riding the wave of highly talented beer, wine and spirit producers emerging across the country.

The bar is built in a historic row house with an intimate front bar focused on cocktails, an outdoor central courtyard and a large back bar in a restored carriage house. The building was stripped to its bones – hundred-year-old heart pine floors and brick walls. Brass finishes and leather furniture will accent these original materials.

The front bar is opening in January 2017, while the courtyard and back bar will open later in the Spring. (more…)

“For Rent: K Street’s newest craft cocktail bar (formerly “The Speak”) is currently taking applications for cool guests and patrons. The space is located at 1413 K Street in NW DC and is tucked directly below Vieux Carre, the new French-themed cocktail bar owned by the same management team. Like any decent Craigslist housing ad, it promises easy access to Metro, a great neighborhood walk score, and a well-stocked bar.

The layout feels like it’s made for living: active and inviting yet subtle with low lighting and intimate corners. The bar is central with an adjacent “living room” perfectly situated for friends, gatherings and board games.

Boring cocktails are guaranteed to never see the light of day, courtesy of Jesse Raines, the bar’s decorated beverage director. The Cocktail Menu consists of “DC Neighborhood” themed drinks, which highlight the city’s unique corridors.

Stanton & Greene “relaunching itself as a craft cocktail bar that celebrates the history, heritage and flavors of these United States”

“Stanton & Greene is taking inspiration from its location in the heart of Capitol Hill and relaunching itself as a craft cocktail bar that celebrates the history, heritage and flavors of these United States. The centerpiece of this rebranding is a new cocktail menu that consists of two historical recipes and ten original cocktails each directly inspired by a different amendment in the Bill of Rights (see guide for details) .

The two historical cocktails are Benjamin Franklin’s Clarified Milk Punch, recorded in a 1762 letter to James Bowdoin, and Martha Washington’s Cherry Bounce, a favorite of George Washington’s. A taste of these drinks is literally a sip of history. The list of original Constitutional Cocktails embraces the history of American drinking as informed by mixologist Remy Canario’s extensive background reading (see bibliography) and research at the Library of Congress, emphasizes ingredients native to North America (e.g. Concord grapes and black walnuts), and evokes flavor profiles familiar to all Americans (e.g. apple pie and peanut butter & jelly). The result is a menu that is highly accessible, but also full of novel flavor combinations and fresh ideas including: craft versions of two of the most humble of drink orders, rum & coke and vodka & red bull, the use of stickers as a medium to incorporate the scent of essential oils into a cocktail; ingredients with medicinal properties; and a 100% local cocktail. “Allow us to reintroduce ourselves… as Hank’s Cocktail Bar.

We will continue to offer the same seasonally focused, high-quality food and drink menu, the same affordable prices, and the same great neighborhood vibe that guests have come to know and love at The Twisted Horn as well as JL Restaurant Group’s sister venues, Hank’s Oyster Bar & Hank’s Pasta Bar.

“We’re excited to share this name change with you all,” Owner, Chef & Restaurateur Jamie Leeds says. “We would always refer to The Twisted Horn as our cocktail bar, so why not call it that. As JL Restaurant Group expands and as we celebrate the one-year anniversary of The Twisted Horn in January 2017, we wanted to bring the cocktail bar under the Hank’s brand.”

End of an Era – Rustik Tavern Closes in Bloomingdale After Six Years

After Big Bear, Rustik Tavern was one of the first big gets for Bloomingdale. Like Big Bear, it was a bear to get opened and was immediately embraced by the neighborhood. Rustik quietly announced their closure Wednesday and went out with a bang Saturday night. Rustik’s owner Diton Pashaj still currently owns and operates Steel Plate in Brookland and I’m sure has a few other plans in the works. Stay tuned.

After a little over 6 years, Rustik Tavern will be closing its doors this Saturday, November 26th. We are so grateful for the opportunity to have spent these past years with you, getting to know this amazing community and creating lasting memories… and we hope to see you one last time! “We usually reach out around this time of year to let folks know when we will be closing Garden District for winter vacation, and we’ve finally got a date – December 18th – with one big twist..

For the next month, in the tradition of Munich’s holiday markets, we’re decking the place out and bringing a Christmas Beer Garden and Holiday Market to 14th Street.

Look forward to 10,000 twinkling lights in the beer garden, Christmas trees for sale, a quarter mile of tinsel, a new menu of holiday beverages on top of our normal lineup of german beers, and a Holiday Market Tent with a lineup of local craftspeople, makers and vendors!

There will be boozy wintry drinks: Eggnog Shots, Miracle on 14th St Mulled Wine, Office Party Punch, Santa’s Little Helper Hot Chocolate, Blitzen’s Blitzed Hot Cider and a few more we’re still cooking up.

“Free State, opening in December, 2016 will be a casual neighborhood bar that brings local libations and provisions from the mid-Atlantic states to the heart of Washington, DC. Located in the basement level of 700 G St. NW, Free State will offer a well-curated list of 14 drafts and large format bottles from local craft breweries. The craft cocktail list will mix up some new recipes and classic favorites that feature spirits made by distilleries from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. A selection of local wines from Virginia and North Carolina will be offered and complimented by classics from the new and old world. Finally the snack list will include some nostalgic local staples to compliment the drink lists.

Free State will architecturally feature a nautical theme with rustic and comfortable furnishings featuring reclaimed wood, ship rope, antique maps and photography as well as some special personal touches.
