Michelle Goldchain with this head shaking find from Reliable Tavern:

“Only in D.C. can you buy ice cubes for approximately $1 to $2 each.”

Jason remembers Jessica Sidman’s classic The Ice Is Right: Is Artisan Ice the Final Frontier for Craft Cocktails?:

“Not all ice, it turns out, is created equal. While the cubes in your freezer (and many bars and restaurants) are clouded with bubbles and cracks, the premium stuff is dense and clear, so it melts slower and won’t water down your drink as quickly. Hand-carving allows bartenders to create larger blocks that fit the glass, rather than lots of smaller cubes, which means less ice surface area and less dilution. “If you’re going to spend $10 to $15 for a cocktail and it’s on the rocks, you should have the best ice you possibly can,” Ambrose says.”

I was surprised to see Fast Eddie’s window papered over but when I called for details I was told they’d just be closed for renovations for the next month or two. Also while I was looking for more details I found this fantastic yelp review from Babs R.:

“Awesome burgers, great service!! We were in from out of town and this place was right across the street from the hotel. We weren’t interested in drinking, so I can’t comment on that, but we were both starving and dying of thirst. The waitress was on top of refills, we had 5/6 each, and the burger s were cooked to a perfect medium, which we asked for. We tried to go back, I think it was Saturday @ the same time, but the asshole bouncer out front just stood there like a retarded robot repeating”it’s a gentleman’s club”, “it’s a gentleman s club”. No chance for questions, like what are the hours or days? How did he know I wasn’t looking for a lap dance or applying for a job!!! Anyways, if your going for food it’s really good, extremely reasonable, with great service.”

Ed. Note: I do not supported using retarded as a pejorative but the rest of the review is pretty funny.

“Dear PoPville,

I live in Glover Park. My boyfriend’s brother told me that he heard on local DC news last night that the 1,000 year old Mason Inn on Wisconsin Ave was busted for drugs. Have you heard anything about this?”

Ed. Note: Mason Inn opened up back in 2011. Previously it was Gin & Tonic but back in my AU days [MA SIS ’99 Go eagles!!] it was the legendary Grog & Tankard.

Jamie reported to us around 7:30pm last night:

“Big bust at mason inn Glover park. Bags of evidence being carried out.”

Updates when more is known.

From Nanny’s:

“Please join us on Thursday February 1st starting at 6pm for a fantastic lineup of draught beers by Dogfish Head with proceeds going to Street Sense Media! 20% of our beer sales for the night will be going to help out this great cause with representatives from both Street Sense and Dogfish on hand to talk shop. Back in April we learned about the planned Bowling Lounge, Bar & Grille, coming to Ivy City. Those plans and The Eleanor are now coming to the former Union Social space in NoMa. According to Eater:

“Budding restaurateur Adam Stein is installing the bowling lanes, bar, and video games he originally envisioned for Ivy City inside short-lived Union Social instead, telling Eater that his new entertainment complex, the Eleanor, should be here by late spring.

The biggest modification: putting in four mini bowling lanes — “Think ¾ size duck pin-style lanes, from AMF,” Stein says — a renovation that’s projected to take up to three months. He’s hoping the significant remodel will still allow for around 180 seats inside (current occupancy is 250), plus room for 70-odd people on the outdoor patio.”

STAY TUNED.

Grady’s is finally here!! All the details from the owners:

“Grady’s is a comfortable and inviting spot with excellent food that we’ve created for our neighbors.

The neighborhood around 14th and Florida has grown rapidly over the last 5 years. The goal of Grady’s is to provide a warm, friendly and comfortable neighborhood restaurant for our local residents that may not be interested in the frenzy or trendiness that much of 14th St. has to offer. For Grady’s, the Chef is designing approachable seasonal menus featuring local ingredients with a focus on steaks and wild game meats.

The downstairs bar itself is originally from a ghost town in Nevada and was painstakingly moved here piece by piece. The upstairs bar is a laid back scene with darts and tables that are ideal for poker, if that kind of thing should ever break out. The Bar program features old and new. Mostly local craft beers are on tap and in bottle/can but customers will find familiar brands too (for instance Budweiser is on tap) New and classic cocktails feature many of the ingredients that would have been found behind the bar when it was first built. “Dear PoPville,

My friend went out to happy hour at Penn Commons (700 6th St, NW) Friday night. At some point in the two hours she was there, we believe something was slipped into her drink. She blacked out after two beers and came-to outside on a sidewalk to strangers trying to help her, realizing she had recently thrown up but with no memory of actually puking. She managed to get home by 10 by somehow summoning a Lyft, as evidenced by her phone.

We’re grateful that nothing worse happened to her, but we’re scared that this may not be an isolated incident. Regardless of who slipped what into her drink, we want to share that this incident happened with the community so that other individuals can keep an eye out for themselves and/or others, whether at Penn Commons or another establishment.

A predator is clearly out there and unfortunately his or her bad behavior is placing people in danger.”
