From a press release:

“Returning for its second year, Drink Company’s Cherry Blossom Pop-Up Bar opens March 1st to usher in springtime with inspiration from both D.C. and Tokyo. This time, Drink Company is partnering with the National Cherry Blossom Festival to further celebrate the Japanese gift that has become unanimous with spring in D.C.

“This is our second annual love letter to DC and the, quite literally, beautiful relationship we have to Japan, enshrined in our Cherry Blossom trees,” says Drink Company President Derek Brown. “Last year we had a sensation with Mario Bar and we want to keep the pop-culture element alive by featuring perhaps our second closest association with Japan, Godzilla. While there will be pagodas and blossoms, we know that most Americans think about the famous monster flick when they think Japan and we’ve given it the PUB treatment: giant monster replicas, flashing warnings, Tokyo streets and drinks to match.” (more…)

Ed. Note: In 2009 Black Rooster almost closed after the Peace Corps HQ planned on expanding but it was saved last minute. Since the reason for this closure is the “lease is up” it doesn’t sound like a similar reprieve will be likely.

It is a dark day. Thanks to Robert for passing on from WTOP a Facebook post from one of Black Rooster’s owners, Jody Taylor:

“It is with tremendous regret and personal sorrow that I must announce the upcoming closing of the Black Rooster Pub May 2018. The Rooster opened in 1970 and has had a long and successful run–certainly more than most pubs in the city. However, our lease is up and all good things must come to an end. It is certainly the end of an era. (more…)

From Go Fund Me:

“This is the OFFICIAL GoFundMe for Hank Dietle’s. Thank you for all of your requests to help. We are in the process of planning the initial cleanup and determining insurance coverage for the building.

In the meantime, this fund is being setup to assist with the recovery efforts to help bring Hank Dietle’s back: the very first steps of cleanup, to help our employees who are out of work, musicians out of equipment, purchasing replacement items for rebuilt space.

About Hank Dietle’s Tavern: Montgomery County’s oldest roadhouse! We are a small neighborhood spot right across from the White Flint Mall. Drop by for a game of pool, kick your feet up on their front porch, you can even catch a band on given nights… We are the ONLY bar in the county where you can bring your own food or order food in. At Dietle’s there are no strangers here… Only friends you haven’t met.”

As of 4pm about $3000 has been raised out of the $20,000 goal.

If you were excited about Player’s Club after seeing the coming soon signage you’re gonna flip your lid when you see inside. Last we heard, one of the owners (Ian Hilton) told us:

“6 pinball machines. Also skee ball, b-ball, bubble hockey and like 20 old school video games including my personal favorite, Gauntlet.”

Well my friends that translates far better in photos.  And maybe it’s because I’m 43 years old and this whole place reminds me of my youth but, I think you’ll agree that this place is fan-freaking-tastic.  If all goes well they will open in a week or so – but March 1st at the very latest.

It’s unassuming at first, and oh so fitting to be in the basement.  You are first greeted by a wall of record covers:

And then the magic starts:

A million more photos after the jump. (more…)

The liquor license placard for Archipelago says:

“Applicant requests to expand the business into the second floor of the building, thus increasing the Total Occupancy Load of the premises from 94 to 166, and increasing seating from 88 to 148.

I thought they already had a second floor? Stay tuned.

A little less fanfare than when they turned ten but the special will be Russell’s choice according to Tony T. I’ll echo what I said last year and will hopefully echo many years into the future – Congrats to the one of the best that has quietly and consistently made D.C., the real D.C., a better place to live and work. And drink. And have fun.

From a press release:

“On Thursday, February 15th, The Wave USA will unveil their “Enter Wakanda”, interactive experience and pop up bar event at Red Lounge located at 2013 14th St NW. In celebration of the premiere of Marvel’s Black Panther, the pop-up bar will be available to the public from Thursday through Monday, highlighted by interactive experiences, art installations, musical entertainment and a specially curated drink menu.

The idea was sparked by Wave co-founder Gregory Jackson, “It began as an idea for a happy hour to compliment a private viewing for the movie and grew into something much more important.” Jackson continued, “we saw an opportunity to create the type of experience that would never be created for us, so we decided, if not us, then who?”

In order to complete this experience, The Wave tapped in to the talent of DC residents: (more…)
