“Say hi to Archie. AKA Baby Archie, Archibald von Fluffenbaum, Archenmeyer, or die Knuddelmonster in German. He’s a 10-yr-old Turkish Angora kitty. We got Archie last April when his previous owners turned him out in favor of two new dogs who didn’t like him. He lived outside, under porches and in storm drains, for over 8 months. A kind neighbor found him, and nursed him back to health. She says he was covered in dirt and tar, and was half the size he is now. Archie likes the simple things in life. He likes to sit in the window, he likes to sleep in the sun, and he likes to curl up on you and fall asleep. Archie LOVES people. Any people. As long as they pet him. He follows us about and talks to us regularly, just in case we look in danger of forgetting he’s here. Vote Archie! Cuddly kitty extraordinaire!”

“The all white one is Jocelyn, and my friend had her for a year and decided that she needed a boyfriend, so she took her to the shelter where they met Lance, and after a bunny speed-date, Lance was adopted too. As you can see, they have become pretty close!”

“Our gal Mollie is a 2 year old lab mixed with

“It wasn’t so long ago that Dr. Dre Constantine found himself on the cold concrete floor of doggy prison. So now that he’s been liberated, he can be excused for lounging about and enjoying the good life on his microsuede sofa a little too much. He’s cool, he’s smooth, and he’d like a cocktail now, please. Vote Dr. Dre!”

“Danny has the perrrfect PoP story. He was born a feral kitten on the hard streets of Petworth, frequenting The House, and living off the scraps of Fish in the Hood. He was set on the path to a life of thuggery and ‘rock throwing,’ even losing part of his left ear in a knife fight over an Eat More Fried Chicken bone. But before it was too late, he was graciously taken in by the warm heart of a Petworth resident. A few weeks later, that resident posted that she was looking for a new home for Danny on one of PoP’s

“This is Simba. If you have walked by 13th and Irving/Kenyon, then you have probably have come across this little guy. He enjoys spending time outside, and I apologize if he has attacked your cats or come into your apartments to sleep. He doesn’t mean any harm, unless you are a mouse/rat/bird/squirrel…I’m sure the list could keep going, but these are the only animals I’ve seen him kill.”

“This is America aka Mera. Mera is originally from Tennessee, and despite her cool and slick appearance this Australian Shepherd has not always had an easy life. She loves living in Columbia Heights with her foster mommies, and is looking for her dream life-long home. She’s a sweet, single girl who likes long walks, candle-lit dinners, and chicken bones left on the sidewalk (which her vegetarian mommies do not love).”

“Above all, Toby is a survivor. After he ripped his stomach from his chin to his groin and underwent a massive surgery that had a very low survival rate, he went on to endure Halloween dress-up. Stegosaurus Toby is our champion.”

“Meet Mehitabel. She was born in PoPville, and has lived her entire life here.

In December 2007, at the age of 5 months or so, she walked in the front door, having tired of living on the very cold streets with her mother (now spayed, but still on the street) and sisters (some in, some out, and all now spayed.)

She quickly made friends with Mr Kitty http://www.princeofpetworth.com/2008/08/coolest-pet-in-popville-31-32-and-33/ who is now sadly gone, and made herself right at home inside. She doesn’t like outside any more, although she does enjoy sitting in the window. She is death to bugs and catnip. She likes to have her head scratched. And like Don Marquis’s Mehitabel the tabby cat, she believes that she is Cleopatra reincarnated.”

“Meet Cladius the guinea pig. Weighing in at 2.2 lbs, he likes:

– carrots.
– a stuffed bunny named ‘buns-is-pigs.’
– hiding.

“Clads,” adopted from Montgomery County Humane Society, dislikes:

– his monthly bath.
– circling hawks.
– South American cuisine.”

“This is Snoop Dogg and his little brother, Jackson. I know there’s two of them in the entry, but they are brothers and are NEVER apart. These two are best friends, yet couldn’t be more different. Ebony and Ivory. Snoop is older, more refined. He prefers a nice scotch on the rocks and likes to read the Encyclopedia Britannica. Jackson, on the other hand, is still a puppy and likes loud parties, PBR, and being the center of attention. Together they like to play scrabble, balance stuff on their heads, eat, pull their humans on skateboards, go to the beach and swim, and chase after tennis balls. They live the good life and are the coolest pets in popville, for sure.”

The cats are not competing against the dogs.  There will be 5 dog, cat and “other” finalists that will each compete in their own category.  We’ll have a poll in each category to select the winner.  Using the comments section for these posts will help me select the 5 finalists for each category. You can see all the entries here. Please see after the jump for more entries. (more…)

“I thought I’d throw Agnes into the mix. Unfortunately, her kind is frowned upon by the great District of Columbia, the place where I was born and raised. So Agnes lives out in Fairfax County with some horses and two others chickens, Mrs. Kravitz and Gertrude. She is a very friendly polish hen who enjoys eating worms and cantaloupe, and she has a better pompadour than most hipsters.”

“Klay is our gorgeous golden boy. Here is is wrapped up in the sheets, um, cause the other pets arent cool enough to have discovered thats the thing to do yet.”

“This is Cassidy. She’s a rescue who’s about 3 years old and, if you believe the doggie DNA test, is a German Shepherd/chihuahua mix. Yes, you read that right. Cass loves lamb treats, chasing a ball (but not bringing it back), sleeping under the bed, trips to grandma’s house to get spoiled, and sneaking into the basement in search of the cat who avoids her. She’s afraid of a lot of things and we think she’s secretly a Republican (but we love her anyway).”

“We adopted Corinne Junior (C.J.) in the summer of 2008 from the animal shelter on New York Avenue. C.J. had been a stray, and is estimated to have been born on the day of our wedding. At first we had a hard time figuring out what to name her, but she clearly had a personality connection with Corinne, so Corinne Junior was a natural fit. Feisty, demanding, overly confident, very cute, and an unnatural ability to get into sticky situations.”

“This is Emma. Despite her peaceful demeanor, she is actually a very dangerous revolutionary. She humbly submits her riverboat headshot for the coolest pet in the hood contest, but asks that you not alert the authorities as to her whereabouts in Columbia Heights at an undisclosed location within stumbling distance from Wonderland.”

“Meet Binx. We adopted him a year ago from Puden’s Place Cat Rescue. He’s a Siamese-Manx mix, which means he has no tail, not even a little stub! His hobbies include lying on cardboard, sleeping in our lazy boy, and knocking cat toys under furniture and expecting us to fish them out.”

“My perfect little attention slut. The best pound puppy ever, Létha loves everyone and everything. When not stealing tennis balls from other dogs at the Columbia Heights Greenspace, she spends her free time trying to eat chicken bones off the street and watching the kids play soccer down at Harriet Tubman Elementary – only because she wants to join in the fun. If (more like when) you get her excited, she’ll spin in enough circles that even you’ll get dizzy!”

“Here’s Allie–the premiere pet in PoPville! Adopted from Noah’s Ark, a no-kill shelter in Northern New Jersey, Allie has become the peanut butter to my jelly in the nearly 3 years I’ve had her. Her previous owner declawed her, leaving her with these funny little paws–but that doesn’t stop her from filling her primary role as “The Water Thief.” Sure, she has her own bowl of fresh water, but your water just tastes better. Leave for a minute and she’ll find a James-Bond-like way to drink from your cup. This “talent” along with her funny, chirping meowing style makes her the ideal candidate for the Coolest Cat in PoPville :)”

“This is Loki. He’s both sensitive and strong.”

“Rosiecat scorns dogs in slickers!”

“Meet Mattie. She’s the coolest condo size rottie! She’s three and half and full grown at 65 lbs. Mattie is sweet, gentle, and all-around lovable. When she gets excited, she wiggles so much that sometimes she almost falls down. Its adorable! Why do rotties get such a bad rap??”

“We told these two that people wanted an Arby’s in Columbia Heights and this was their reaction. Amusement or horror? You decide. These two brothers are 3 year-old tabbies adopted from the Washington Humane Society on Georgia Avenue.”

“This is Ukiah (tan Chihuahua-Dachshund mix and WARL rescue (pronounced You-Ky-Ah)) and Pico (Chihuahua) multitasking – practicing the “pose” and “shake” commands at the same time!

Pico enjoys playing with anything that squeaks or bounces, including Ukiah. Ukiah enjoys snuggling under the covers.”

“Norbies (Norbert) is a 3 year old American Shorthair. He is an extremely rare cat in that he comes when called and is the only cat I’ve ever encountered that seems to be entirely hypoallergenic. He is wise beyond his years and has helped advise me in many areas of life…He has taught me “when in doubt, RAWR!” Sage advice.

He enjoys cardboard boxes, catching flies that get into the room, and messing with his brother Goblin (French Bulldog). Before he moved in, I had an intense aversion to cats (blame it on the allergies) but he has changed my entire world.
Simply the coolest cat I’ve ever met.”

“This is my boy Flash. We live in Columbia Heights on Monroe Street. He is a Golden Retriever. Actually, Flash is a show dog from my mom’s Kennel in Richmond, VA. She works closely with several universities including Duke and Virginia Tech now trying to help learn and prevent major cancer’s in Golden Retriever lines. Some retirement she is living right?

Anyways, Flash is basically just an extension of our couch. He’s always there for a few smiles, and a cold brew or two.”

“This is Monster! She’s a 4 year old Boston Terrier who loves people and cuddling. Children love to poke her face and adults love to ask if she’s blind in one eye. She takes it all with a wag and a smile. She also enjoys spending time with our cat, Shrimp Scampi.”

“Pictured are Diego and Frida, during one of their calmer moments. Typically it’s hard to capture them in the same camera shot b/c they are constantly pouncing on each other, or racing up and down the long hallway of my apartment. Both cuddly and playful, they are THE coolest cats in POPville.”

“This is Cali, the meanest dog in the neighborhood. Well, one would assume this by the way people cross the street when they see her coming their way. The fact that she is the sweetest dog one could ask for, can be our little secret. No, she is not a grandma pit bull. She is a 3 year old chinese shar pei. This picture was taken while camping at Assateague Island. She looked like this the whole weekend because she loved sticking her face in the sand. If you see us walking around or at Meridian Hill Park, don’t hide, come by and say, “Hi.” ”
