“This train will moving momentarily.

Vote Simon.”

“Meet my dog Oz. He is a rescue from WARL. His litter mates were the “O” litter, Oz, Oink, Oriole and Ooga Booga.”

“This is Lucy, doing what she loves to do most…. sleep!”

Ed. Note:  The cats are not competing against the dogs.  There will be 5 dog, cat and “other” finalists that will each compete in their own category.  We’ll have a poll in each category to select the winner.  Using the comments section for these posts will help me select the 5 finalists for each category.  I’ve gotten some amazing entries, and a lot of them (over a 100)!  So I’ll need your help selecting the finalists.  Maybe at the very end we’ll put the three winners in each category up for an overall winner.

The deadline for entries is August. 1st. Remember, please only send one photo per pet. You can see all the entries here. Please see after the jump for more entries. (more…)

“This is Sir Lancelot of Buckley, Beagle-Basset Hound Extraordinaire a/k/a “Lance”.

Turn ons: sleeping on forbidden furniture, Snausages, getting his back scratched, and finding chicken bones on the sidewalk.

Turn offs: getting his ears cleaned, bicyles and other scary be-wheeled things, not being allowed to eat the chicken bones he finds on the sidewalk. He is obviously not a big fan of the New York bar exam, either.”

“Attached is a photo of our cat Hunter. Hunter was adopted in mid-April from a shelter in PA and made the big move to our apartment in Petworth. Since coming here he has proven himself worthy of his name as he has enjoyed big game hunting the various roaches and spiders that make their way into our apartment from time to time.”

“I’m pleased to introduce you to Olive.

Olive is a corgi/border collie/panda (?) mix adopted from the incredible Washington Animal Rescue League. Olive was in very rough
shape when WARL gave her a second chance last year and she has now blossomed into happy, healthy pooch. She enjoys watching all of you PoPer’s from our front window, meeting new friends on the Wonderland patio, and stalking the elusive Sherman Avenue Black Squirrel.”

“This is Peter, aka The Orange Gentleman, aka Kitteh. He is the coolest cat in PoPville because he enjoys lounging around his Capitol Hill apartment in a bowtie while judging his owners.”

“This is the Duchess of Destruction: Proof that girls can be so very ornery and still give you that innocent and cute “who me” look before they mess your stuff up bad. Dutch the Australian Kelpie”

“Cooper livin’ it up at the beach!”

“Max is about 4 years old and I have been permanently cat sitting him the last 2+ years. I have know him since he was a kitty however.

He is a very sweet cat. He like to be around people and isn’t shy with strangers. He enjoys sitting on my laptop keyboard while I am trying to type, running up and down the long hallway in my apartment to chase after a tennis ball (sometimes he gallops), and watching tv. I also think he secretly likes 80s music because he never seems to leave the room when I have it playing. He even has his own Facebook page. And look how cute he is!”

“I wanted to enter Abby — the sweetest dog in PoPville — in your contest. Since we picked her up from the Human Society last month, my roommates and I have come to love her devious but always adorable antics! Please consider her awesome ear and tongue holding capabilities!”

“Gizmo rocks the Mt. P/Adams Morgan/Columbia Heights/Rat Park neighborhood with his elderly waddle, the result of an adorably gimpy paw (a tragic holdover from his hard days on the streets of Denver where he was originally adopted at the Dumb Friends League). Giz has been calling DC home since November 2007.

Vote Gizmo 2009!”

“I would like to introduce you to Juneau. A rescue kitty originally from Texas, Juneau has made her home in DC since 2005. Juneau is quite a talker and frequently attempts to carry on conversations, particularly when a door has been closed to her, she enters a room where someone is sleeping, or she can see the bottom of her food bowl (this last circumstance fills her with horror every time it happens). She enjoys sleeping in the sun or on top of people. At some point someone removed the claws on all four of her paws, but this does not stop her from occasionally trying to investigate the world beyond her deck. And yes, the deck is hers. Juneau owns the house.”

“Meet Billie Jean.

This photo was not staged. I heard a commotion in the kitchen went in there and found her playing inside the wok.”

“This is my new puppy Winston. He’s a 14 week old Basset Hound and definitely the coolest dog in PoPville. This guy keeps me laughing all day long. It doesn’t get any cooler than this guy.”

This is Wilma, a 5-year-old tabby who was adopted from Washington Animal Rescue League. She is already a bit of a celebrity, having been featured as Miss June 2009 in the nationally distributed “Cat Lovers Against the Bomb” wall calendar (http://www.nebraskansforpeace.org/catlovers.php)! Here she is pictured atop a Kleenex box, watching the world go by outside her Columbia Heights window!

“He goes by the name of Lucky”

“Amos is a brand new addition to The Beautiful Life this year, adopted in February from the Washington Humane Society, but he’s already plotting his escape to the moon. When not busy with rocket science, he plays fetch (really!) with his catnip mice.”

“Blondie the Chihuahua enjoying a boat ride.”

“This little Timneh African Grey’s name is Calliope. She is barely a year old and is already using public transportation.”

“This is our little mutt puppy, Quinn. We think she is parts dachshund, beagle and terrier.”

Oh wow, maybe I should make puppies a separate category?

“Meet Ike. Ike has thumbs. Actually Ike has six toes (and claws) per paw. He’s fierce and cuddly. He was adopted from the ASPCA in New York City. Ike had been rescued from a magazine store basement, then adopted, then returned, then adopted again – by me.

Ike lives in Columbia Heights on Irving Street. He likes to play with his cat nip Arnold Schwarzenegger doll and grip things with his thumbs, like forks, iPods, Blackberries and wine glasses.

Ike should win. He’s definitely the coolest pet in all of Washington, DC. Two cat thumbs up.”

“Rusty Russell (Part Yorkie – Part Chihuahua – ALL love)”

Above is Yukon:

“Here’s your winner, hands down. I get multiple inquiries every single day. What kind of dog is that? Is that a horse? Does he weigh more than you? He’s definitely something special. Yukon is a great dane/yellow lab mix, by our best guess, and weighs in just under 120 pounds. We adopted him when he was approx 6 yrs old and at approx 9 years old, he’s in great shape and truly lives up to the name gentle giant. He enjoys spending most of his time hanging out every evening in our big front yard on the corner of 13th and Irving.”

Above is Colby:

“I give you Colby, in honor of his adoption from a shelter in PA five years ago.

Colby IS the coolest pet in PoPville because… well, look at the photo. Awesome, right?

But more important than his death-defying acrobatics is the fact that he is the lovingest, neediest feline ever to disgrace the aloofness stereotype. If you’re sitting, he’s on your lap. If you’re sleeping, he’s keeping your feet warm (in July… thanks dude). Most important is that we have a toddler, and he looooooves her. He puts up with anything from her. Endless games of peek-a-boo. Atttempts to cut his claws. I expect doll clothes aren’t far off. He has never so much as glared at her, which makes him, say it with me now, THE Coolest Cat in PoPville.”

Above are Friskie (dog) and Rahm (cat):

“So I realize this picture flouts the categories a bit, but both Friskie (dog) and Rahm (cat) coexist happily in Petworth. Rahm enjoys playing with Friskie’s tail, and Friskie enjoys chasing Rahm and treating him like her own puppy.”

“This is Dallas, we have no clue what he is a mix of but he is a big boy at 85 lbs. He was found behind a hotdog stand in NC.”

“Here is a photograph of my cat Dexter wearing his favorite hat. He is quite the stylish fellow!”

I’ve received so many entries for this contest that I cannot individually reply to all the emails. Also, next week I have may have to post more than 2 entries a day per post.  But don’t worry your entry will be posted! The deadline for entries is August. 1st. Remember, please only send one photo per pet. You can see all the entries here.
