This condo is located at 1735 Johnson Ave., NW:
The flier says:
“Spectacular 2-lvl penthouse unit. Private elevator only goes to this unit, private gated parking. 2 terraces. Soaring 2-story ceilings. Top of the line appliances, open kitch. Large terrace from master bedroom. Surround sound system, wood burning FP, Great location – Logan and close to Dupont & U St, Whole Foods and lots of retail.”
More info and photos found here.
Here’s another pretty open condo. It looks like it gets great light. What do you think of the condo itself? It’s yours for $1,159,000. It’s been on the market for 250 days so perhaps the price still needs to come down?
Almost exactly a year ago we looked at the building next door.

Speaking of new restaurants I’ve been wondering if anyone had the chance to check out the recently opened Masa 14 located at 1825 14th St, NW. Their Web site says:
“Chef Richard Sandoval, who brought us his marriage of Latin-Asian flavors, Zengo has partnered with Chef Kazuhiro “Kaz” Okochi of Kaz Sushi Bistro to bring us Masa 14 – a new joint concept serving Latin and Asian small plates. The 5,000 square foot restaurant is slated to open mid-September this year just north of Logan Circle located at 1825 14th Street, NW.
The new concept will have capacity for 240 guests and features a spacious 100-seat dining room, plus a private dining room which can accommodate parties of 18.
In addition, Masa 14 will house one of the largest bars in the DC area with a whopping 65 foot long – 74-seat bar/lounge which is divided into three sections featuring selections of tequila, sake, beer, wine and cocktails. In addition, guests can view the open kitchen complete with a wood-fired brick oven which will be most utilized after midnight for Masa 14’s late night menu.”
You can see their menu here. Any early word yet?

“Dear PoP,
Seems like new restaurants are opening up everywhere you look. What’s your thought on why there are so many new places? Is DC finally turning into a foodie town? Are rents coming down, allowing for new upstarts? Or are people willing to spend money on food in a down economy?
In any case, there’s something called “Duro” or “Puro” cafe opening in upper georgetown on Wisconsin Ave just up the street from the new TD bank, on the same side. There’s also a new diner going in next to Tunicliff’s Tavern on 8th st SE across from eastern market.”
Those are good questions in the first paragraph. Anyone know why so many new restaurants seem to be opening up? Or is it the same amount of restaurants that are opening up but they have really good PR?

NBC is reporting:
“A power outage at Metro’s headquarters has led to massive problems systemwide, allowing people to ride some buses for free and shutting down WMATA’s Web site, call center and e-mail alert system.”
Anyone get a free ride this morning?

One of the greatest assets of this site is the unbelievable wealth of knowledge and diversity of opinions voiced in the comments section. But I have to agree with a number of emails I received as well as some comments made in Yesterday’s emotional response to Derek on Being the Stereotype (by Danny Harris). Often there are subjects covered on this blog that deal with particularly sensitive topics and issues. I think the discourse that follows in the comments is often quite valuable. I really just have a simple request that the thread not get poisoned by personal attacks.
Personal attacks on other commenters and personal attacks on the subject himself (in the case of Derek) are not helpful. Believe me there have been many times when I’ve wanted to curse people out but we have to understand that in an internet thread personal attacks are simply poison. They do not contribute to the overall conversation and they simply piss people off. We can comment as vigorously as we’d like on the subject at hand but please try to make the effort to avoid personal attacks. Thank you.

This was a bit of a freaky sight as the entire store (even more than the photo shows) was filled with these identical heads. Your caption in the comments and winner announced Friday.
From a press release:
“In today’s legislative session, Councilmember Bowser introduced the “Home Improvement and Age-in-Place Incentive Act of 2009,” which will remove the assessment cap credit on home renovations. This bill provides an economic incentive for homeowners, most especially seniors, to renovate their homes.
District law currently limits the increase on a homeowner’s property tax bill to 10 percent above the previous year’s assessment. This cap, however, does not apply if a homeowner undertakes renovations that result in at least a 10 percent increase in property value. In this scenario, the entire value of the renovations as well as the market price are captured and taxed accordingly. Councilmember Bowser said “Not only does this law adversely affect lower-income homeowners but also seniors who must renovate their homes to make them, at the very least, habitable so that they may age-in-place.”
If passed, homeowners, including seniors, may renovate their homes, install a first-floor bathroom, fix a roof, install a wheelchair lift, or replace windows. Further, this bill will permit owners of lower-valued homes to benefit from the tax break to the same extent as owners of high-valued homes.”
Now, I can renovate my kitchen! Do you guys think this legislation is a good idea?

We looked at this spot a number of months ago and had wondered what would go in. This past weekend I picked up a flyer announcing that it is Capitol Movement Studio. Their Web site says the space has been open since April:
“In April 2009, CMI also opened the Capitol Movement Studio, located on 14th and Crittenden Streets, NW in the 16th Street Heights neighborhood. The studio is as diverse as our organization, offering classes in Ballet, Pilates, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Afro Cuban, Salsa, Modern and more…We strive to keep participation fees low to ensure that all who are interested in training can afford to do so.”
Sounds super cool.

Back in September a reader mentioned some new art going up at the Convention Center. In addition to M St. there is also art on L as well where I found this one. It put a big smile on my face.
