“Dear PoPville,

Here are two trees purged due to RIFs, forks, early retirements, and office consolidations at EPA.

Not sure that they’d count, as they are sad and perplexing for entirely different reasons, but thought that I’d submit for your consideration! Only the popville commentariat will really understand.” (more…)

Thanks to a reader for sending around 7:30pm last night (Wed.) from Chevy Chase, DC:

“I heard a loud noise didn’t know what it was so ignored. Saw red light reflections in window later and then walked out to see the car on the lawn. Tore through fencing, flipped, hit a tree. People are saying it was going very very fast. Hope driver is okay was already sent to hospital when I went outside.” (more…)

From the Good People of Ivy & Coney:

“I was going to write my usual funny (or mildly chuckle-inducing) message to you. But honestly, times are tough these days and real harm is being done to our community, especially those of us that are black and brown. The city has been resilient, the people are protesting, and hopefully we’ll all survive these troubled times.

In order to not let the bastards beat us down, the race must go on. This coming Monday, we’ll be doing it up as we have these last three years. There will be stupidity, there will be fun, there will be drinking, and, of course, hot dogs. Hopefully, there won’t be any federal goons.

FYI: $5 of every ticket goes directly to our friends at Bread for the City. Their work is more vital than ever.

Author Honorée Fanonne Jeffers shared:

“Beloved:

I’m so sad to report that, due to current events in Washington, D.C., I have decided not to travel to D.C. to participate in the National Book Festival on September 6, 2025.

I really—REALLY!!!!— wanted to attend to be in conversation again with the incomparable, brilliant Imani Perry, but given all that’s happening, frankly, as an African American, I’m just afraid to be in that city. I wish I had more courage—but my cancellation is in no way a reflection of those who do have the courage to attend or on the wonderful organizers of the National Book Festival! I’m just a person who suffers from anxiety and I have to be a better shepherd of my personal health. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Has anyone been having mail issues recently? We haven’t received mail in about a week (predictive mail emails say we are missing at least 6 pieces of mail) and then on Sunday, I saw these USPS trucks making what looked like amazon deliveries with no license plates on the trucks. Very odd…”
