Himitsu taking over Cappy’s Crabs (Crane & Turtle) space on Upshur Street “in a few weeks!!”

828 Upshur Street, NW

Word is finally out on who’s taking over the Cappy’s Crabs space on Upshur – City Paper reports:

“While Japan will be the leading culinary influence for both the food and drinks, the restaurant is very much wrapped up in the personalities and viewpoints of its young, first-time restaurateurs. [Carlie Steiner and Kevin Tien] That’s why they’re dubbing it “New Japanese” cuisine because Tien, the executive chef, will punch up traditional Japanese preparations with Latin, Southeast Asian, and Korean flavors.

Himitsu will start by serving dinner Tuesdays-Saturdays from 5 p.m. to close. They will not take reservations. Instead, seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Mid-October is the projected opening date.”

On Facebook they shared on Saturday:

“Gettin’ lit @himitsudc // see you in a few weeks!!”

Stay tuned for an exact opening date.

This looks so promising! The blurb misses the most exciting part – the bartender is coming from barmini and the chef is coming from Pineapple and Pearls. Looking forward to trying it out.

    • Seems odd for a chef to be leaving P&P already, I wonder what the story is there…

Both are super young and pretty successful (it seems) for their age. The City Paper article says he wanted to focus on Japanese cuisine (in which he has a background), so maybe he just got to the point where he could afford to open his own spot. Should be interesting to see how it goes!

        • I’m certainly looking forward to it, unfortunately I never made it over to Crane and Turtle before they closed.

“Punch up traditional Japanese” is that thier secret? Is that why name of restaurant means secret in Japanese? Hoping for better fusion and less all-over-the-place than Sakerum. Wishing Carlie and Kevin good luck

This looks amazing! Still holding out hope for a deli, bakery and a new coffee shoppe in the neighborhood (hellooooo Park Place!), but this will be a great addition.

    Nice! Looking forward to this.

oh! Let me know if you want to go try it out, this looks promising!

Please let it be neither an unmitigated disaster like their diner down the road, or weird and expensive like Crane and Turtle was.

    • Hi Jerry,

While we have great respect for both restaurants, we are in no way affiliated with Crane & Turtle nor the diner down the road. We are simply leasing the space in which Crane and Turtle used to occupy. We hope to be approachable but no promises on being less weird :)

“Himitsu” means “secret” in Japanese, in case anyone wondered. I also missed ever getting to try Crane & Turtle, so I hope I make it to this new spot in time.
