“Dear PoPville,
I read an article a few weeks ago about crazy rent increases in Washington DC. Our rent is scheduled to go up from about 2100 to 2700 for a 12 month lease, or 3300 for a 6 month lease. If it matters, that’s just base rent and doesn’t include parking, dog fees, electric, or water… Our building isn’t rent controlled but is that even legal?”
“Dear PoPville,
I’m the proud owner of a 7yo husky and I recently sold my condo. I’m in the market for an apartment but it turns out my husky isn’t welcome. Apparently the breed is on the Restricted Breed List that many buildings use. Read More

“Dear PoPville,
Our landlord has provided notice that she would like to sell the row house where we’re currently on a month-to-month lease. I’m aware that we have the right of first refusal when it comes to purchasing the property at a fair price. We provided a response this week that we will not be purchasing the property. Read More

“Dear PoPville,
For anybody who didn’t know, May 1 is the first date landlords may raise rents in rent-controlled units, following a freeze on increases amid the pandemic. Landlord have to provide 30 days notice, which means lots of tenants should be receiving letters around now. Read More
“Dear PoPville,
I currently rent a one bedroom apartment in a building in DC and pay $2195 a month. My lease just expired on 2/28/22 and I’ve gone month-to-month. It will be short-lived because I close on a condo later this month. The apartment building requires 60 days notice to move out instead of 30, which I submitted on 2/15 when I went under contract. So my last day of paying rent will be 4/15. Read More
“Dear PoPville,
I live in a newer apartment building in NoMa & after living here for a year, my landlord wants to raise my rent by 45%. Do you know if there are any restrictions limiting rent increases in non-rent-controlled buildings (which as I understand, are built pre-1975)?”

“Dear PoPville,
I live in a residential building in Dupont Circle and am seeking advice from the community regarding renting, construction sites, and quality of life.
The building directly adjacent (shares a wall with the entire length of my apartment) is being demolished to build a new high rise apartment building. What makes this situation a bit different than usual is that our management company is also constructing the new adjacent high rise apartment building. Therefore, our management company is directly responsible for making our rented living space “unworkable” and “unlivable” from 7 am to 5 pm. Read More
