A reader reports around midnight:

“My husband, two neighbors, and I were outside shoveling our sidewalks around 11:30 pm on the 200 block of Webster NW. We heard a car with loud music coming slowly towards us and we stopped to look at who would be crazy enough to be riding around in this. We heard a loud pop go off, then another pop as the car passed by my neighbor. As the car rolled towards my husband and me, I saw the passenger point a black gun out the window straight at me, then up into the air and fire. The car just kept rolling down Webster and fired 4 more consecutive shots around the 400 block of Webster. My neighbor said the guy had pointed the gun straight at him too before pointing it up in the air to fire. We were no more than a car length away from the car when he pointed the gun straight at us. Needless to say, we were all in total shock and disbelief that these guys were riding around terrorizing people like this. We called the police and they came by to get out info. All anyone of us saw was that it was a white or silver newer model jeep with a thumping sound system and extremely bright, almost blue, headlights. I know that’s not much, but between the blizzard and the gun pointed at us, we didn’t see much else.

Please let the neighborhood know that this is happening. We were totally caught off guard and didn’t even have time to react until the guy already had the gun pointed straight at us. Hopefully they’ll catch these guys before they seriously injure or kill someone.”

Helluva a great start!!!  Keep ’em coming via email to [email protected] or tweet me @PoPville or of course upload to the PoPville Flickr pool.

blizzard

From the Mayor’s Office:

“In advance of the pending blizzard, Mayor Bowser and her Administration are urging all residents and visitors to find shelter, and stay in place, prior to the start of the storm. The storm is expected to bring more than two feet of snow to the District, with sustained winds up to 50 miles per hour.

The blizzard will be dangerous and potentially life threatening. During the storm, people should avoid being out on the roads, for their own personal safety. The public’s cooperation is also critical for the city’s emergency personnel and first responders, who will need to use major arteries to respond to any emergencies.

At 9:30 this morning, Mayor Bowser declared a snow emergency – meaning that all cars parked in snow lanes must be removed. Otherwise they will be towed. The Mayor will lift the snow emergency after the snow event has ended.

Ed. Note: God forbid, but you can find DC’s warming centers here.

From Pepco:

“With the weather forecast growing increasingly severe, Pepco continued reaching out to customers to encourage them to prepare for the possibility of extended power outages as a result of Winter Storm Jonas.

The company contacted individual customers who have registered with the company as needing electricity for critical medical equipment and advised them to review their plans and to take appropriate action as necessary to ensure their safety and well-being.

Weather services are predicting up to 24 inches of snow, high winds and ice that could produce hazardous road conditions and power outages starting tonight and continuing through Sunday. Because icy roads hamper restoration efforts, Pepco is prepared for the possibility of widespread outages that could take several days to restore.

“Winter Storm Jonas is predicted to produce heavy snow and winds that could cause extensive power outages. Pepco is well prepared for the storm, but if roads become impassable due to deep snow and downed trees, our power restoration efforts could be slowed,” said Donna Cooper, President of Pepco.

The utility is preparing for the possibility of significant power outages and currently has 150 internal linemen, 200 contractors and more than 200 tree crews available to respond. Pepco is participating in calls with other utilities to request additional line and tree crews as needed.

In addition, Pepco’s Call Centers will be staffed 24/7 and all internal personnel, who have been mobilized to support the potential for an emergency restoration effort, also will be working around the clock.

Pepco is coordinating closely with local emergency management agencies and the District of Columbia, Prince George’s County and Montgomery County departments of transportation.
