Bei Bei via Smithsonian’s National Zoo

From the National Zoo:

“#BeiBei had his first introduction to snow today! Keepers took him outside to a small behind-the-scenes area and let him explore in a light dusting of snow for a few minutes while Mei Xiang ate her breakfast in her outdoor yard. Keepers said he wasn’t quite sure what to make of the powdery snow.”

While we wait – here’s a reminder of how awesome/mesmerizing sister Bao Bao’s snow roll was last year.

From DCDPW:

“Once the Official Snow Emergency announced by DC government goes into effect Friday, January 22 at 9:30 am, then DCUSA will allow nearby residents to utilize the parking facility for the price of $1 per day. Upon arrival, the resident will receive a ticket and have their name and license plate information recorded by a U Street attendant. On their departure, the resident will present the same ticket received in order to get the discounted parking rate. Once the emergency has been lifted, any residents still utilizing parking in the garage will be charged the difference, at the standard rate, for the time they were in the garage.

Vehicle owners have a 2-hour grace period from the time the snow emergency declaration ending announcement to retrieve their vehicle without receiving any additional charges.”

If Saturday in Dupont doesn’t sate your thirst now there’s one Sunday too. From Facebook:

“Come to the top of Malcom X/Meridian Hill Park and bring all your battle gear. This will be an all out showdown, winner take all.

Location:
Use 2330 15th St NW DC 20009 in Googlemaps to see how to get to the park. We will be on the top level directly at the midpoint and between Chapin Street and Euclid Street. The closest metro is U street (13th St exit) and the Columbia Heights metro is also an option and pretty much the same distance away.

Time:
The official start will be at noon (first snowball thrown). So let’s try and get as many people as we can to arrive before then. Get there early if you need time to plan strategies and setup.

Setup:
We will have two teams. No need to choose a side now. You can pick which side once you get there.
Team Polar Bear vs. Team American Bald Eagle
Battle lines will be drawn and the first team that has the majority of their team members cross over the opposing teams battle line will be declared the winner. I know it won’t be an exact science when it comes to judging but that’s ok, we’re here to have fun.

Themes:
There is no theme. Come dressed however you want. Bring whatever accessories you want, as long as they’re safe.

Prizes:
I’ll give away a $25 Amazon Gift Card to the person I feel has the “best” overall costume.

Post Snowball Fight Meetup:
Acre121 is located right near the Columbia Heights metro (1400 Irving St NW) and has been generous enough to offer us happy hour all day! So come on by any time after 12pm. $5 for all draft beer and well drinks and select wines. They’ll also add a special cider drink ($7) and Hot Toddies for $5. Here is a link to their happy hour specials which include both food and drink.”

News of Car2Go’s suspension of service was a shock to the system but now it’s getting really real. From WMATA:

“Metro today announced major service changes and suspensions on Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess in advance of a potentially historic blizzard affecting the National Capital Region. The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for the Metro service area from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning, and the effects of the storm are expected to impact the region into early next week. “Dear PoPville,

Given that P street Whole Foods is out of onions, garlic, and carrots and the line for Trader Joe’s is out the door, I thought I’d write and share my winter storm shopping secret: Streets Market at 2400 14th St NW (just north of 14th/Florida). Their produce is fully stocked and the pantry items are on par with Whole Foods. Pretty good deli counter/prepared food, too. Zero line at the check-out.”

UPDATE: Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) responds:

sidewalk

“The sidewalks of the Inter-American Defense board (IADB) where all shoveled and cleaned at 10:30 P.M., 5 hours before the time limit established according to the DC laws and regulations.
The work was accomplished by a Company contracted by the IADB and that work was supervised by staff from this Organization.

The IADB does however welcome your comments and suggestions helping keep the neighborhood clean and safe for all of our community

The IADB also appreciate the positive comments received regarding the care and efforts put in to maintain these areas clean and safe.”

“Dear PoPville,

I would like to report the Inter-American Defense Board for what I think may be violations, but since they are quasi-diplomatic, not certain.

The IADB is located on 16th Street and Euclid Street, NW. In eight years of walking along Euclid Street from west to east and catching the S buses outside of their building on 16th Street, not once have I seen them clear snow or salt around their entire property. They also never pick up any trash along the sidewalk adjacent to their property on Euclid Street between Mozart Place and 16th Street, NW.

Today was no exception. The sidewalks along Euclid and 16th were sheets of ice. Is there anything that can be done about these “bad neighbor” practices? They have a security gate surrounding their property, so I can’t knock on their door. If I call, they will ignore.”

Ed. Note: If you’d like to nominate a violator after the big one – please send an email with a photo and the location to [email protected].
