Fear not, it’s just the annual spring cleaning!

From DC Water:

“The District of Columbia, Arlington County and northeastern Fairfax County will clean out their tap water network starting Monday–a safe, annual process. Water service continues uninterrupted during the process, which runs from April 5 through May 17. During that time, drinking water may smell or taste slightly different. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I have noticed that someone is dumping out food for animals in our neighborhood near Barnard Elementary. To date, I have seen cereal and what looks like a several whole sandwiches scattered on the ground. Recently someone has been leaving a cup of water out as well. While it may help some birds, I have watched more than a few rats at a time gorge themselves. I just want to say as a friendly reminder to please get a bird feeder instead.”

“Dear PoPville,

I hope you’re having a great Monday. Mine started with a fraud alert from Wells Fargo saying someone tried to extract $91 from the ATM but the card was declined due to an incorrect pin input. I only pumped gas, I didn’t use the ATM so it certainly wasn’t me. My only assumption is that perhaps a skimmer was on the pump. I’ve since called Exxon and notified them of the possible skimmer situation and which pump, etc. Hoping to help others avoid the situation until Exxon resolves! This is the Exxon right by union station in Capitol Hill. Thanks!”

Ed. Note: This isn’t the first skimmer at a gas station alert we’ve been sent over the years – anyone have tips on how to identify if one is possibly in place?

“Dear PoPville,

On my way to work this morning, as I was attempting to clean my windshield …I turn on my wipers and realized someone removed my wiper blades.

As I continued driving to work my fuel cap indicator began to blink on my console. I pulled over thinking I needed to tighten up my fuel cap, and realized that was gone.

It would appear individuals are removing car parts from vehicles at night.

The only positive outcome is that the thieves did not vandalize my car!”

“Dear PoPville,

Ticket patrol almost nailed about 8 cars on my street for parking in the wrong direction. 2000 block of 8th between Florida and V NW. The problem is my block had switched to one way during the construction of a new building which replaced Towne. The one way signs were removed about 2 months ago but people continued to treat it as 1 way. (more…)

Matt warns: “Would you park in this empty space at 4th and I SE? If you do, DPW will ticket you at 2am, which I and many of my neighbors learned the hard way. Anyone want to venture a guess why? If you park within the clearly painted parking box, you are too close to the stop sign. Apparently you are not allowed to park within 25 feet of one, which means that even the front bumper of the grey car is too close (though the car across the street was not ticketed).”

Credit to DPW who replied to Matt: “Matt, please email us at [email protected], we’ll be able to figure out a better solution via email. Feel free to share this address with your neighbors.”

Last night we received a number of reports about Comcast/Xfinity outages (service appears to be restored for many though some are still experiencing slowness as of this morning.) Doesn’t seem related bu thanks to Nat for sending this interesting tidbit: “I got an email from my apartment about RCN possibly experiencing “sun outages” between Feb 27 and March 8. I wonder if that’s what’s happening to Comcast?”

From RCN:

“What are Sun Outages? (more…)

From our first discussion back in 2011

“Dear PoPville,

So today [Tuesday] we had two gentlemen knock at our door and ask if we’d like to have some fine frozen meats — they were promising a very good deal. First it sounded off. But then I thought in COVID times, they might be small businesses owners getting creative to make ends meet. So I asked hubby to see what they had and make sure he only had some cash (limited amount — couldn’t spend much). They pulled up their minivan, marked with “Capital Meats Company” and started pulling out frozen fine cuts, pushing him to get these “unbelievable deals” for hundreds of dollars. (more…)

9th and T Street, NW

Thanks to Kristin for sending earlier this afternoon: “FYI- dogs are being electrocuted by a pepco manhole on 9th and T St. Please avoid walking over manholes with your dogs during these snowy/icy/salty conditions. Last night, a dog was shocked while walking on it and was in an almost paralyzed state for a few minutes. We put a sign over it and called 311. Firefighters are here now roping off the area.”
