“Dear PoPville,

I saw at least half a dozen cops, including one undercover and some in bulletproof vests make a huge scene out of shutting down Orbit DC and Hip Hop Museum on 18th street today for marijuana licensing. There were maybe 8-10 vehicles, camera crews and the Commissioner of ABCA ready to give an interview right away. The entire effort seemed like a press opp.

The lovely woman who works there is a neighborhood gem and was handcuffed and taken away. I’d love to know if anyone is aware of the charges against her and if there are any efforts to support legal fees for her. I believe she’s a documented immigrant and know she has made the neighborhood safer for everyone by sitting outside, giving out dog treats, and even being a witness for a bike accident.”

From ABCA:

“Today, April 24, 2025, the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA) and Metropolitan Police department closed and padlocked Orbit DC located at 1919-1921 18th Street NW marking the District Government’s 50th illegal cannabis shop closure in DC.

Illegal shop closures have taken place across the city with 17 in Ward 1, 10 in Wards 2 and 6, seven in Ward 4, three in Ward 5, and one in Wards 3, 7 and 8 each respectively. (more…)

Update from Legacy DC:

“It’s unfortunate that DC’s Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration acted without due process and shuttered our business, which operates legally under Initiative 71. We had planned to present our case during a city hearing already scheduled for April 9th. We were shut down illegally despite this.

The tactics used by ABCA go against the will of voters in the District and against the will of citizens across the United States who are sick of criminalizing cannabis use and sales. The people have spoken, and yet these aggressive, illegal and unwarranted raids continue.

Legacy DC has worked for years to ensure justice in this city, rallying with other I-71 businesses to make cannabis legal in DC – as it is in countless other states. We also strived to be a part of the civic fabric of this city that we love, donating tens of thousands of dollars to local organizations and charities, performing multiple street cleanups and giving a platform to many local talented artists and musicians.

We’re incredibly disappointed by what happened here today, but we plan to continue our fight.”

From the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration:

“On April 3, 2025, the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration’s (ABCA) Enforcement Division, accompanied by Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers, implemented Closure Orders to the owners of Legacy DC located at 1937 14th Street NW, Washington DC.

The Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis (ABC) Board issued the Closure Orders in response to their continued operation as an unlicensed cannabis retailer. Due to the business posing a credible and imminent danger to public health and safety, ABCA shuttered the business, including padlocking the doors. (more…)
