“Crew Club closing in Logan Circle”

The Washington Blade reports:

“The Crew Club, which has operated as a gym, sauna and bathhouse for gay men in the nation’s capital for 25 years, will close its doors for good at its Logan Circle area location on February 29, according to its founder and co-owner DC Allen.” The report goes on to say that the building has been sold to Douglas Development.

It is Time to Flood Taqueria Del Barrio with Love (and Money)

The Washington Post reported the awfulness that’s been happening at Taqueria Del Barrio:

“D.C. police are investigating after a restaurant owner in Petworth reported receiving dozens of phone calls, some threatening to “kill the staff,” which the owner believes are tied to a monthly drag queen brunch and a separate drag trivia night.

Most of the comments were homophobic in nature, Bran-Leis said, noting that her staff members are nearly all part of the LGBTQ community. She said the calls came from four different phones with different voices, some of whom said “they were going to burn down the restaurant and kill the staff.”

As we showered Comet Ping Pong with love in their time of need, I say we do the same for Taqueria Del Barrio. Let us show them the power of love. Have a look at their menu here and plan a visit soon!

Yesterday the Post reported:

“On Monday, the charitable arm affiliated with Chick-fil-A revealed that it had overhauled its donation strategy and had stopped giving money to several organizations — donations that had long angered LGBTQ activists.”

From the Chick fil A Foundation:

“Starting in 2020, the Chick-fil-A Foundation is introducing a more focused giving approach to provide additional clarity and impact with the causes it supports. Staying true to its mission of nourishing the potential in every child, the Chick-fil-A Foundation will deepen its giving to a smaller number of organizations working exclusively in the areas of education, homelessness and hunger.

Ed. Note: I realize that there have been numerous crime posts these last few days but I can’t pretend what is happening is not happening. I also don’t think we should normalize these events and pretend this is just part of “city living”. These events are horrible and must not be accepted as “normal”. One has every right to be angry and upset that they are happening. One should also recognize that solutions to these deep seated issues are not easy. Simply saying lock them up and throw away the key is not the answer. Doing nothing is not the answer either. If advocating for long term solutions there must also be interim actions to stem the violence that we are seeing. Hopefully there are those who will not pander but will work on genuine solutions that begin to ameliorate what we are seeing far too often.

“Three gay men were treated and released from a local hospital following a Halloween night attack on the 1400 block of P Street, N.W., in which an unidentified attacker “used homophobic language” while assaulting the men, according to a police report and a Facebook account of the incident by one of the victims. What the heck is happening at Larry’s Lounge – “Closed – Gone Fishing” Sign Posted!!

“I was going to drop in there on Friday after a birthday party, when I got there, they were closed before midnight. Sunday evening came, and they were still closed. It was odd. I went up to the door and they had a sign that said “Closed Gone Fishing”. I spoke with someone who works there that said they got closed down in a similar way as JRs with the liquor license expiring. I am told they closed on Wednesday and had been operating for some amount of time without a current liquor license. The person I spoke with said they may have to reapply for a liquor license from scratch because the amount of time that lapsed.” (more…)

Arrest Made in Monday Afternoon Assault on a Man with a Bicycle “investigating this offense as potentially being motivated by hate or bias”

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Second District announced an arrest has been made in reference to an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Bicycle) offense that occurred on Monday, June 24, 2019, in the 1100 block of 19th Street, Northwest.

At approximately 2:20 pm, the suspect and the victim were involved in a verbal altercation at the listed location. During the altercation, the suspect threatened the victim, struck the victim with a bicycle and made homophobic slurs towards the victim. (more…)
