Can you please share this story of an anti-gay hate crime on U Street? It reminds us DURING pride month why it’s so important to HAVE pride month. These despicable acts are still happening in our own backyard.”

“UPDATE: DC Police LGBT Liaison Unit just visited us to see how we are doing. They confirmed 3 juveniles and 1 adult were arrested.

My boyfriend and I were assaulted last night [Sunday] a few blocks from Nellie’s for just talking closely on the sidewalk. It started with homophobic slurs and eventually there was a mob of 15 guys on him. I was powerless and all I could do was try to protect him. His phone is stolen, they knocked out a good part of his front tooth, and he had to get stitches for his lip. He doesn’t have insurance and we’re not sure how he’s going pay for it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.”

There had been a lot of chatter on social media but now Cobalt confirms their closure on 17th Street:

“It’s no secret that the building that housed Cobalt (1639 R St NW) and the adjacent property recently sold.

With the combination of the sale of the buildings, the start of demolition, costly infrastructure repairs and upgrades that we would need to shoulder to remain open for the short remainder of our lease (without an opportunity to extend the lease) along with a slow decline in sales we decided it was the right time to close the business to focus on our other businesses and some personal family needs. Walters Sports Bar Reopening in Navy Yard Next Spring – 5 Day LGBTQ Pride Baseball Bar Pop Up during MLB All-Star Week

“Walters, formerly on Georgia ave is popping up at the All Star game at 1221 Van St SE. The pop-up gathering will include a beer garden and full bar in a space at a building at the corner of South Capital and N Streets, S.E. that next spring will be the future home of Walters Sports Bar. The location is directly across the street from Nationals Stadium.

“Among the events scheduled to take place during that five-day period will be a first-of-its-kind LGBTQ Pride Baseball Pop-Up bar hosted by the Washington Blade, which this year became the first LGBT publication to serve as an official sponsor of MLB All-Star Week.

“Our bartender at Pitchers just told us they’re opening up a lesbian bar in the basement called A League of Her Own and I’m shook. Coming this summer.

It’d be the only lesbian bar in the city.”

On June 19th Pitchers DC posted:

“We are so happy to announce that Jo McDaniel will be joining the Pitchers Team. She will eventually run “A league of her own”. Here is a little about Jo.

Jo McDaniel has been creating a safe space in the LGBTQ bar scene in the DC area for 13 plus years. Since 2005, she has been that queer chick behind the stick at some of DC’s most relevant gay bars.

Earlier this month she won Stoli’s Key West Cocktail Classic after being the first woman to win the regionals in DC. She’s bringing $10,000 back home to Casa Ruby as well as winning $5,000 for AH Monroe, a Key West charity dedicated to providing resources for HIV and AIDS.

Jo is excited to be joining our bartending team and will be managing A League of Her Own, our queer women’s space, slated to open at the end of July.”
