From the Nationals:

“The Washington Nationals acquired catcher Keibert Ruiz, right-handed pitcher Josiah Gray, right-handed pitcher Gerardo Carrillo and outfielder Donovan Casey from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer and shortstop Trea Turner. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Washington Nationals Managing Principal Owner Mark D. Lerner made the following statement regarding Max Scherzer and Trea Turner: (more…)

Another painful blow to what once was fell last week. Velvet Lounge posted on IG:

“Thank you so much for all the years of love. We are closing the physical establishment for good but we’d just like to say thank you and leave you with this. Please keep you head up and continue to try your best, you gave us some of your most beautiful years so thank you. @velvetloungedc and everyone who was ever apart of that experience. The end of an ear.” (more…)

I’ve been hearing rumors that Sullivan’s was not doing too well for years. I was told a while ago that they’d be closing sometime this July but I was hoping it was another false alarm and/or that the owners would post a note on their Facebook which I could include, alas there is not (I emailed as well.)

At any rate, there are now major discounts at the store and the shelves are getting bare. If you want to say goodbye, I’d hurry. An employee I spoke to did say they were looking for a new location but they did not find one yet so obviously stay tuned on that front. This is a very sad parting for those with little kids (and artists) or just those who are little kids at heart. Sullivan’s is the type of retail that make our neighborhoods so great. Their leaving here is a sad day indeed. This is not the first time they’ve moved so hoping they find a new space soon. Stay tuned.

Thanks to Margot for passing on the sad word from Salon Roi:

“Friends, it is with mixed emotion that we share this with you! Like millions, we have been struggling for over a year now to keep our DOORS OPEN, while operating 20/30% of our normal capacity and Income. We have done a good job following all the COVID rules to the “T.” AFTER ALL THAT, we were not successful in negotiating a new LEASE. So, like many long-time businesses in Woodley Park, we are forced to close the doors of Salon Roi after 52 years in the same Building.

So, June 30th, we will be leaving Our MARILYN MURAL behind, as we all pack our styling carts and head to SALON ROI (#2) (more…)

Thanks to all who passed on from Glen’s:

“I wanted to reach out to share some news that impacts our relationship. Do not fret, my friends, you’re not going to lose your neighborhood grocery store (the team made it through the pandemic safe and sound), things are just about to change a bit around here — for the better, ultimately. I’ll be leaving the company (in excellent hands) this summer.

As you know, I opened Glen’s Garden Market on Earth Day of 2013, because I’d given up on Congress and knew we could make more climate progress together than they would in the meantime. And over the course of nearly a decade, we’ve made a whole lot of progress — one bite at a time. We put the environment first in our decisions, from the products we supported together to our careful waste streaming practices and our joint efforts to eliminate food waste. We launched almost 100 local, sustainable food companies of which over 60 were founded by women and more than 20 are owned by people of color. Our space often felt more like an activated community center than a grocery store. In short, we did what we set out to do.

As I began reflecting on what it meant to step into the last year of our first decade (which we did on Earth Day), three realizations set in: (1) we still have a lot of work left to do, (2) I needed to do everything in my power to hold my team together, and (3) I needed to position the store to thrive indefinitely — for our producers and for you, our community. However, our lease expires next summer, and for a series of reasons, I wasn’t going to be able to renew it.

And so, last month, I sold Glen’s to a long-time independent, specialty grocer with one other store in the area, who sees the world the way I do. (more…)

Adams Morgan Inn Says Good-Bye after 38 Years — by Adam Crain, owner, Adams Inn B&B

“After 38 years, the 27-room Adams Inn on Lanier Place in Washington DC is now closed, another victim of the Covid pandemic. Founded in 1983, Adams Inn’s namesake was its Adams Morgan neighborhood. There were two previous owners before I became owner in 2001. It is sheer coincidence that I share the same name as the Inn.

Adams Inn prided itself on affordability, always offering several rooms for under $90/night. With an average room rate of $128/night, breakfast included, the Inn was flooded with budget-conscious travelers. Our 86% annual occupancy rate was one of the city’s highest year after year. Many guests were repeat visitors, and many stayed for weeks at a time.

The Inn offered an intimacy rarely seen at larger hotels. With a small staff and low turnover, I got to know my staff; and they in-turn got to know our guests. My staff’s work ethic never ceased to amaze me; sick days were a rarity, and the work was fast paced. Most employees lived, at best, paycheck to paycheck, some hovering just beyond poverty. All were consumed with providing for their families, and as a result they yearned for work. I cannot imagine a group of harder working people. Yet because Covid devastated the hospitality industry, many will likely be left behind even as the economy recovers. (more…)

For those not familiar: “Adam’s Inn, a Victorian B&B spanning three 100-year old buildings on a quiet residential street, has been a “home away from home” for international and budget-conscious travelers for 20 years.”

Thanks to all who messaged about Adams Inn closing: “Saw this sign this morning, little sign says Closed 2021. Will miss their crazy Halloween displays!” (more…)
