From Congresswoman Norton’s office:

“Today, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released a statement calling on the U.S. Capitol Police to allow sledding at the Capitol tomorrow and next week in anticipation of a snowstorm.

“The west side of the Capitol is well known as perhaps the best place for sledding in D.C.’s high-density urban environment. (more…)

From the office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton:

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today sent a letter to Dr. Sean Conley, physician to the President and head of the White House Medical Unit, expressing concern about the failure of the White House to provide contact tracing during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak among staff, visitors, and the President himself. In her letter, Norton says that the District of Columbia has worked hard to become among the best at coronavirus containment, but the lax way the White House has responded to the outbreak and its failure to do contact tracing threaten D.C. residents.

“As the only representative of our nation’s capital in Congress, I have worked endlessly to prevent the spread of this deadly disease and limit its effects on the people I represent,” Norton said. “The White House’s – and particularly the President’s – recklessness jeopardizes these last eight months of work. Many White House staffers live in the District, and the President’s actions and the White House’s refusal to adequately follow up with contact tracing risks the lives of D.C. residents.”

The letter, which follows below, asks for answers from Dr. Conley to four questions by October 13, 2020. (more…)

Ed. Note: We first started following this development back in April 2014!

From Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s office:

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), who has long sought long term-investment to maintain the three public golf courses in the District of Columbia, today celebrated the announcement that the National Park Service (NPS) will begin negotiations with National Links Trust (NLT) to operate the three historic golf courses here in the District.

NPS will negotiate a long-term lease for the East Potomac, Langston and Rock Creek golf courses to ensure an optimum recreational experience for golfers and capital improvements. (more…)

From Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s office:

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today called on the owner of the National Football League’s (NFL) Washington team, Daniel Snyder, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to change the team’s racist name, an issue she has long pressed.

“I again call on Dan Snyder, the owner of the Washington football team and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to recognize this historic moment and change the offensive, racist name of the team,” Norton said. “The name has cost Snyder far more than it could possibly be worth. The racist name stands in the way of the team playing in the nation’s capital at the RFK Stadium site, Snyder’s preferred venue. My bill (H.R. 1883) would allow the District of Columbia to buy the RFK Stadium site, which is federally owned. However, the Congress has been clear it will not approve the bill to sell this site to the District as long as there is a chance the Washington football team, with its current name, would use the site. From Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s Office:

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released the following statement after President Trump’s erratic and violent evening holding a press conference in the Rose Garden while peaceful protesters were being shot with tear gas and rubber bullets nearby. After the press conference, during which his rhetoric became increasingly violent, President Trump went to nearby St. John’s Episcopal Church, which had been damaged by rioting the night before. When he arrived, the President held up a Bible and stood for photos.

“President Trump cemented his image in history as he ordered the use of force against peaceful protesters and then stood on the steps of a historic church in the Nation’s Capital holding a Bible in the air. His stance in front of St. John’s church across from the White House gave the appearance of a provocateur, protected, of course, by police from harmless protestors, who had threatened no one. If he was concerned about the church, why didn’t he ask the rector of St. John’s to stand with him? (more…)

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today sent a letter to the Acting Director of the National Park Service (NPS), David Vela, requesting the closure of the chambers of the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials after reports that crowds had been forming at the sites over the weekend. Norton said her letter was motivated by concern for the safety of the general public and NPS employees during the coronavirus. (more…)

From Congresswoman Norton’s office:

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today sent a letter to the Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Personnel Management urging them to extend paid leave for teleworking federal employees to allow them to care for family members during the coronavirus pandemic. The letter asks for teleworking employees to have up to 15 hours per week to care for family members, such as children whose schools are closed.

“As federal employees care for children who must be kept home from school during this unprecedented pandemic, it is important that these teleworking employees are given time to care for their family members,” Norton said. “Allowing these employees an extra 15 hours of leave per week will help ensure that these federal employees are able to continue their vital work while caring for their families.”

The letter follows: (more…)

From Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s office yesterday:

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s (D-DC) bill to make the District of Columbia the 51st state was passed today in the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, moving her statehood bill to the House floor for expected final passage. Norton is already working with more than 100 national organizations with records of getting bills passed in the Senate.

“For such a historic achievement for the District of Columbia, the only message I can convey is gratitude,” Norton said. “Thank you, Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), for your extraordinarily skillful and patient leadership, always with fairness to both sides. Thank you, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), who appeared at an earlier press conference with Chairwoman Maloney and me, for your longtime leadership on statehood, democracy, and legislation for the District. Thank you to our more than 220 cosponsors and Committee Members who stood with the disenfranchised people of the District today. Above all, thank you District residents for turning out in large numbers to once again demand equality in the Congress. We have only one last hill to climb in the House – onward to the House floor!”

Norton’s bill would make most of the present-day District of Columbia into the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth, with the remaining territory designated as the nation’s capital. (more…)

From Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s office:

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today vowed to fight the Trump administration’s plans to move more than a fifth of the employees of the Bureau of Land Management out of the National Capital Region.  The Washington Post reports that roughly 300 employees would be impacted by the proposed move.  This decision comes as the administration attempts to illegally move two offices in the Department of Agriculture (USDA) to Kansas City.  Norton successfully included provisions in fiscal year 2020 House spending bills to block USDA from moving to Kansas City. From Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s office:

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released a letter she sent to U.S. Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund today urging the Capitol Police to amend their policies to permit electric scooters on Capitol Grounds, while adopting narrowly tailored regulations to protect public safety. Currently, scooters are prohibited on Capitol Grounds despite their widespread use by staffers, District of Columbia residents, and tourists.

In her letter, Norton writes that electric scooters “are an affordable, environmentally friendly and efficient mode of transportation relied upon by increasing numbers of Hill staffers, D.C. residents and visitors to our nation’s capital. As such, electric scooters should be treated like motorized bicycles, mopeds, segways, and the other low-speed vehicles,” which are already permitted on Capitol Grounds.”
